Nokia Lumia 1020: Smartphone camera reinvented

0. phoneArena 11 Jul 2013, 14:51 posted on

The Nokia 808 PureView introduced a revolutionary smartphone camera technology to the world, but it always felt like bringing this innovation to the market alongside a dead OS was largely a wasted effort. Everyone loved the powerful camera, but no one fancied the Symbian-powered smartphone, especially when the fate of Symbian was perfectly clear...

I am hoping that by the time the L1020 makes its way to VZW, it will get an upgrade to the CPU, GPU and screen resolution.

Probably. Verizon will release the Lumia model in the holiday season, which is about when Microsoft will release the GDR3 update to WP8 will be released, which brings 1080p display support.

Verizon Lumia 1028: 4.7" 1080p display with Snapdragon S4 Pro @ 1.7 GHz, everything else the same.

With an S4 Pro, Nokia will continue their commitment to early L1020 adopters - to not completely obsolete their purchase.

I wonder how long it will take to write a 36 Mp file to storage with an S4 dual core CPU? The Galaxy Camera with the Sammy Exynos quad core chip takes about a second... :-(

It shouldn't take more than about 2 seconds. Based on Antutu scores, the Exynos 4 Quad scores about double that of dual core Krait in CPU tests.

But, the S4 Plus and S4 Pro only support up to 20 MP cameras. So 21 MP of that 41 in the 1020 are essentially useless, unless there's something I'm missing.

They use a separate processor for the camera.

that seems true as their is no point to continue on this spec sheet with so much varity now and this will be intersting as this model will soon see huge price drop after the next genration phones are launched

the pureview was able to handle it without any hassle on a single-core and outdated os, with a lot of power to spare, it ain't android you know. S4 can't handle that powerful cam the way only nokia can, unless anyone wants either more gazillion lags or another reason to have another samsung blow up...again...

"we can't wait to put our hands on this PureView shooter and compare it against the fearosome competition out there, including the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Apple iPhone 5."

dont wait. if you have seen the demos, you know it's way way way (to the power of 41) above the rest.

You can't compare WP8 and Android 4.x processors head to head. It isn't apology to say WP8 doesn't need the fastest quad-core out there.

That said, the 1.5 Ghz S4+ is the same chip Nokia put in the Lumia 920 8 months ago, and something much faster will probably be released in a few months.

Impressive, undoubtedly! Exactly such 'details' in smartphones make differenceon the mobile market. You don't offer new crucial features, you don't sell your products to new customers...

The biggest feature of this phone is just the camera function/hardware. I'm not too keen on owning a device that runs on Windows.

I know, I just couldn't resist with such subjective advice. "You should try WP8." "No, don't try it. I find it boring."
