Nokia CEO again says 'we would consider any option' on operating systems going forward

0. phoneArena posted on 07 Feb 2013, 04:37

Speaking in Australia the other day, Nokia's CEO let one slip again, when discussing the possibilities of releasing a tablet, and the eventual mobile OS it will use. "We haven't announced tablets at this point, but it is something we are clearly looking at very closely," he said, and then it became interesting. "Our first focus on what we look at is clearly in the Microsoft side," was the follow-up, while he again stated Nokia "would consider any option," for the horror of the PR people around, who advised he mention "but we have made no decision or announced nothing..."

While it's the obvious right answer, it's not something Microsoft wanted to hear, who gave serious backing to Nokia not to fall apart.

i am a big fan of MS & Nokia. but you misunderstood the relationship of the both. They both had nothing to celebrate of in the near future because they were rapidly fading away. conjunction of both have somehow saved both of 'em. If you take nokia and all the lumias out of the question you wont see that much WP devices in public. without nokia MS cant grow as mobile os, where on theother hand if nokia chooses to go to android it will be the end of monoply of android held by samsung !!!

Go Nokia! Make a tablet then make an iconic design just like the Lumia 800, 900, 920!

Of course, Nokia finally turn to profit stage, which means Nokia has more money to invest more than one platform, elop can now afford to get any platform beyond the wp8 :)

8. _Bone_ posted on 07 Feb 2013, 05:08 3 4

Not if they made strategical commitment with Microsoft. They only recently went full-Windows to separate themselves from the pack which is paying off right now; if they give up the exclusive status entering the saturated Android market dominated by Samsung, they not only risk a failure there, but falling behind on W8 front.

As a customer I'd love a 41MP PureView Android with the screen tech of the 920, but from purely a business standpoint, I'd prefer Nokia staying with the platform they currently lead. A loss on both fronts would be the end of the company.

9. wendygarett (limited) 6 days ago posted on 07 Feb 2013, 05:14 1 3

That's why Nokia need more profits to handle the risk dude lol... That's what I'm sayin...

11. _Bone_ posted on 07 Feb 2013, 05:56 3 2

They turned profitable because they focused on one OS, would be foolish to go back what almost killed them, right?

12. wendygarett (limited) 6 days ago posted on 07 Feb 2013, 05:57 3 2

Just wait 2 more years and see :)

See what?

14. protozeloz posted on 07 Feb 2013, 06:13 3 1

They where focusing on one OS. And it failed them once... If for example the next version of windows comes in a year and half they are doomed to use the windows 8 without making any changes to it, but if android stopped, they could still fork it and make great stuff with it

32. volcano posted on 07 Feb 2013, 08:54 3

you think android would save them think again HTC and Sony is prefect example

41. protozeloz posted on 07 Feb 2013, 10:12 1

Many have come with this argument about android...

Two things regarding HTC

1. What HTC is now is much more better Thant what they where, HTC does not have the brand recognition like Nokia does for example compared to what HTC was, if they loose market share Is because of their bogus UI and lack of an acrualy good commercial campaign....

2. HTC is selling windows phone devices.... Has always been and I don't see how is that helping them....

About Sony

Sony used to be Sony Ericsson is didn't have much brand recognition and the numbers of their US devices launch date and other stuff where fail... Don't blame android for bad management

16. peacekeeper05 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 06:24 2 1

A huge chunk of Nokia's profit last Q4 of 2012 came from the Nokia Siemens networks infrastructure. The lumia devices has very little to do with it. And it's Q4... consumers tend to spend more during the holiday seasons so we have yet to see if they'll still manage to have profit this Q1.

About the topic, I would love to see a Nokia Android phone. WP8 is the only thing holding me back to love Nokia again.

20. LumiaLover posted on 07 Feb 2013, 06:51 2

Hi Peacekeeper...I'm interested to know what it is you don't like about WP8? I'm not judging here either way but I have only ever had Android phones up until a week ago when I upgraded to the Lumia 920 and I'm not looking back. I don't know why I like it so much...I think it's because it has the simplicity of IOS but with a better looking UI. Android is fantastic in as much as you can customize so much, but I think I analysed what I used mostly on the phone and how I used it and came to the conclusion that there were too many customization options. Glad to hear that you like the Nokia brand / phone though.

Realtalk.

19. Nathan_ingx posted on 07 Feb 2013, 06:46 3 1

Why change the platform when they're doing good with it?
However, Windows can come up with customizable home screens and translucent/opaque live tiles.
Atleast a customizable option on WP series would do Microsoft some good.

24. wendygarett (limited) 6 days ago posted on 07 Feb 2013, 07:07 2

When a company goes matured, they have ability to do whatever they can, we never know :)

29. Nathan_ingx posted on 07 Feb 2013, 07:46 3

Wendy, we're talking about Nokia here. They're as mature as they can get...
Yes, they can do whatever they want...that is true, that's why i think Nokia can do something about WP.
Like different UI's on top of Androids from different OEMs.

35. daftastic posted on 07 Feb 2013, 09:08

When you think about it, how exactly can they differentiate from one other? How can they be different UI's with tiles as the main focus?

There are only so many things you can do with tiles after all.

37. Nathan_ingx posted on 07 Feb 2013, 09:20

Sir, that was just an example i was giving Wendy...

60. iamfury posted on 08 Feb 2013, 02:06

You couldnt be more wrong, investment was never a problem for nokia when it comes to android.

4. jedpatrickdatu posted on 07 Feb 2013, 04:50 5 2

I hope they don't make an Android tablet, there are tonnes and tonnes of those already. They should make an affordable Windows 8 one, that's still a rarity.

6. wendygarett (limited) 6 days ago posted on 07 Feb 2013, 05:01 2 3

Android tablet is too underpriced for Nokia to make profits, make an android phone 1st :)

5. daftastic posted on 07 Feb 2013, 04:50 2 2

Nokia hardware and Jolla Sailfish OS? Please? Nokia? Please?

7. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 07 Feb 2013, 05:02 5 3

it think a nokia powered by android is just waiting for the "right" opportunity ;)

if you catch my drift

10. SIGPRO posted on 07 Feb 2013, 05:45 5 2

Than why the F3$K they let Meego go? If Nokia will use Android i will never buy a Nokia again!

25. aokde posted on 07 Feb 2013, 07:19 1

interesting! i'm wondering why do you hate android that much and will never buy a nokia if it switches to android? (totally serious with my question, i'm not trying to troll or something. you made a really interesting statement.)

34. daftastic posted on 07 Feb 2013, 09:04 2

Because if Nokia was--after all--going to use Android, then why the heck didn't they? Also a well developed, fully mature MeeGo would crush Android. Probably would have more impact than BB10 has now, being the first buttonless gesture-based UX, with Linux open source. It would have been a massive competitor for Android and would most definitely spank iOS as it is.

38. aokde posted on 07 Feb 2013, 09:29

did you read my comment? if you read it, did you re-read it? and if you done that also, did you get it? cause it doesn't seem like it.
i asked him why he hated android, i'm just curious to know.

55. daftastic posted on 07 Feb 2013, 19:16

You're assuming he hates Android period. I'm saying he might not like Android for Nokia because it would be stupid, and if they were going Android after all, why didn't they.

But given his response, Android to him is laggy.

40. SIGPRO posted on 07 Feb 2013, 10:12 1

Because i used Honeycomb and still using ICS on my device......but man i am sick and tired of Android. Laggy and slow!
But i bought a qyia

42. SIGPRO posted on 07 Feb 2013, 10:21 2

But i bought a Ouya console it will run JB, i am curious.
I tested the S3 with a Lumia 900, and wtf the 900 was faster and snapier with it's singlecore. So i skipped buying the S3.
I think i will go with a new Lumia line, see what Nokia shows at the MWC :)
But still i use my N9, Meego best and simple os ever!

47. aokde posted on 07 Feb 2013, 11:00

fair enough. well, good luck with that :D.

58. MorePhonesThanNeeded posted on 07 Feb 2013, 23:17

You're a bad liar, JB slow and laggy on the S3? Now I've heard everything, we have Windows lovers claiming BS on one end and Apple making commercials about panoramic camera shots...all apparently dislike Android for whatever reasons. Then people complain about android because it has a version for whatever walk of life you have, cheap phone, android has you, medium priced phone full of features, got you there too...high priced super phones that make even desktops jealous Android once again got you there.
I'm not making an argument but I just don't get the Android hate. If it weren't Android being pushed by Google so much, everyone would be walking around with iPhones and still without BT file transfers and no MMS, no panoramic cameras, utilitarian designed phone. It's great to have competition, without it smart phones would still be as dumb as the first generation iPhone.
Here's one quick thing about Windows Phone fans, you guys do realize that your OS is pretty much the exact same concept as iOS right? Do you think that MS is doing right by you guys trying to copy Apple's formula and applying it to multiple devices and hoping to score big.
If Meego was so great, why didn't Nokia keep it alive and keep on making phones with that then? Food for thought, just because you think it's the best thing since sliced bread doesn't mean it actually is.

62. zuckerboy posted on 08 Feb 2013, 03:53

wow nokia lost %50 of market share then :D

13. jroc74 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 06:10 2

He said it the first time when it was about phones....it wasnt mis translated. That 2nd article was him saying the same thing...just worded different.

So.....are we gonna say this is mistranslated too?

15. jove39 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 06:22 1 1

Apart from win8...nokia should evaluate android and ubuntu.

17. peacekeeper05 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 06:27 1 2

23. Caunsidh posted on 07 Feb 2013, 07:02

There's a huge piece of "cake" (market share) waiting for their Android devices, shame on Elop for giving it away to Plastsung and other Apple-wannabies and copycats.

26. MC1123 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 07:21 2

oh shut up elop!! this is Nokia we are talking about!! the one that is the best in it's hardware and software!!

ELOP! STOP ruining Nokia!! continue developing Symbian and let jolla join you again!!!

36. daftastic posted on 07 Feb 2013, 09:11 1

Exactly, MeeGo was the only thing that could've saved Nokia. I call that innovation, open source, NFC, a unique UX, the best design in a smartphone ever. What did Elopocalypse do? Went the boring route with WP.

61. Doakie posted on 08 Feb 2013, 02:14

Meego? They should go Open webOS. Hey If we're grabbing at distant last place OS' that we have fond memories of I might as well throw mine in there. Lol

27. yero789 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 07:30

On it would be so boring if Nokia moves to Android.I mean yes,Android is a very cool OS with best customization options and good apps, but Nokia will lose it's individuality if it moves to Android.Nokia is a unique company, which doesn't use Android as an OS on their smartphones, and as I know, only Nokias and iPhones are the only phones which don't use Android.

28. remixfa posted on 07 Feb 2013, 07:40 1 1

Obvious answer is that if the Lumia line doesnt seriously pick up, either MS is gonna have to buy them out completely or they are gonna have to broaden their portfolio to include android to sell phones.

30. XPERIA-KNIGHT posted on 07 Feb 2013, 08:02 1

that is exactly why this move needs to be made as soon as the opportunity can be made! it would eliminate those possible downfalls...

31. Edmund posted on 07 Feb 2013, 08:13 2

There is a very high probability that Windows 8 will become the number 2 tablet platform within 6-12 months, so I very much doubt it.

39. Caunsidh posted on 07 Feb 2013, 09:55

Highly unlikely, since Windows RT is very limited and boring.

46. freebee269 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 10:47

i would bet on windows surface pro before RT. pro offers alot more options, especially in the business market.

54. jroc74 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 18:56

What makes you so sure? WP is barely making a dent..you think the tablet is gonna do better?

The pro should, but I don't know if a good majority of folks are gonna want it.

33. volcano posted on 07 Feb 2013, 08:59

i like Nokia a lot but i will never buy Nokia tablet if they use android

43. protozeloz posted on 07 Feb 2013, 10:25 1

It could simply be that they use both, a device with android and one without it

44. gwuhua1984 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 10:28

Yeah yeah yeah, he always says that. Deep down he's just a lap dog. At least Nokia's making profit now, so that's a good thing.

45. freebee269 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 10:46

lol. the nokia running android compain continues to go. phonearena seems to be the leading publisher for this.

48. Gaijin_Xiao_Pao posted on 07 Feb 2013, 11:07

Nokia must jump into Tablet market they would've find some place in this universe as well because they have the ability to give some reasonable tough time to other competitors. :)

49. tward291 posted on 07 Feb 2013, 11:10
