If you read the reports carefully, you'll realise that Nokia made no LOSS from it's smartphone & feature phone segment, they only made about 30% less profit than last year, unlike HTC, Sony Ericsson & LG that made losses in their phone segments. So you read the financial reports wrong! Symbian saved the day for Nokia, Elop knows the strenght of Symbian, but he's trying to undermine it, if Nokia puts much commitment into Symbian, they'll be able to go back to where they were before Elop became C.E.O.

Correct, Nokia took a paper loss with a partial writedown of the 8Billion dollar NAVTEQ acquisition made by Elop's predecessor. For sure, NAVTEQ was an excellent addition, but Nokia obviously overpaid and Elop chose to take the 1+ Bio writedown now, in the mist of a turnaround, where the results are already expected to be relatively ugly. A smart accounting move, IMO. Rightly noted, the mobile phone business made a profit from an underlying earnings perspective.
As for Symbian's future...it's a terrific OS that finally has a decent UI. But this is not the strategic challenge going forward...it's a war of ecosystems where the OS is only one element. Clearly MS gives Nokia a much deeper ecosystem upon which to leverage its design, hardware, IP, manufacturing, location based services and distribution strengths. By the second half of this year the fruits of this strategy will become much clearer.

I totally agree with you. However, I must note that the following text written above: "...but it won’t save the company. After posting disastrous quarterly results and closing the year with over a billion in losses, Nokia has now said it won’t be able to meet its target and sell 150 million Symbian devices over the next years"
are totally irrelevant to the subject of the article!
Seriously, how would a financial result of a company be relevant to a news posting about a new OS version? Oh well, I cannot complain since I love Phonearena for regularly posting news.
