Nokia 6216 classic - the first SIM-based NFC phone from Nokia
Nokia announced a new phone at the opening keynote of the annual WIMA conference held in Monaco. The new Nokia 6216 classic is the third model of the company with Near Field Communication (NFC) support and its first device to support SIM-based NFC. What this basically means is you can use a compatible NFC SIM in order to enjoy things like remote ticketing and payment services. The SIM will also be used to install a secure application that stores payment information, but the convenience that NFC contactless payments brings along is well worth the effort.

In terms of hardware and aside from the NFC support, Nokia 6216 classic looks technologically identical to Nokia 6212 classic. It has an estimated price of €150 ($195) before discounts or taxes and shipments on select markets are taking off in Q3 2009.

What is Near Field Communication exactly? I do not think I have heard about this "technology?" before.
