Nexus Prime: what we know, and what we don't as of Oct. 7

As the chips continue to fall into place, we want to gather it all up to cover what has been confirmed, what's still just rumor, and what is probably completely false when it comes to the Nexus Prime...

Inconsistency in the article:
"What we know for sure about the Nexus Prime boils down to just three things:"
You list 11 things, needs to be updated...? Or did I misunderstand something?

This was one of the worst articles i've ever read on pa. the camera is fine, mega pixels are the biggest lie that marketing perpetrates. for those talking about the iPhone5, stop talking as you don't know anything about it let alone about this phone.

The postponement could also be business strategy. Googly Goog and the Android Bunch pay their respects to a fallen adversary while M.C Apple is in court trying to stifle competition.
Just needs the right spin doctors.
(For some reason I can't get my head out of 90's music today. My apologies.)

Also, I think the Nexus will come to AT&T. Sprint, AT&T, and VZW CEOs were attending the CTIA event (... ya it's moved..), which tells me that all three would eventually get it. Also makes some sense why AT&T would go with the 4.3" GS2 model, so they could make room in their line-up for a larger screen that also has a dual core and all the goodies!
210. remixfa posted on 07 Oct 2011, 12:25 2 0
you need to update the processor "what we know" with the fact that there has been many strong rumored "inside" sources claiming that its not the OMAP but an exynos gen2 4212 chip inside the Nexus. To me that would make more sense as an OMAP while a nice chip, is neither top of the line, nor brand new. Both previous nexus phones have brought us new tech (first to snapdragon 1ghz) or a combination of all the best tech at the time (nexus S with Super amoled and Hummingbird). The exynos 4212 chip fits both bills at the same time.
Also neither nexus has strayed away from its manufacturers strong point. HTC has a very cozy relationship with Qualcomm as well as samsung makes its own chips. It would be out of character for samsung to release such a flagship that didnt include all of its own tech and went with a chip it has never used in a major phone.
213. roldefol posted on 07 Oct 2011, 12:58 1 0
I still think the Exynos is only on the "want" list for the Prime. People just don't want to accept that a Nexus device won't have the fastest chip on the market, and they don't believe Samsung won't use its own chip. It's not unprecedented - they've used the Tegra 2 before. From what I've read, the OMAP4 is a workhorse where the Exynos is a racehorse. Is that such a bad thing? Google never promised the fastest ICS device, just the first. That's why I like how Michael called it the "pace car".
214. remixfa posted on 07 Oct 2011, 13:13 1 0
its unprecidented in a MAJOR release from samsung. The nexus is a "showcase" of the current high end playing field of android. Each nexus has not only ushered in the new android software, but the best of the best of hardware. Samsung has only ever used the tegra2 in "non prime markets" like russia. And its use of the snapdragon in the hercules is because tmobile wanted 42mb/s functionality or nothing.. and the current exynos didnt have the radio for it.
Besides, its not the exynos.. thats out of the picture.. the rumor is the exynos Gen2 chip.. the 4212 which is run on a smaller die which increases battery savings and speed at the same time.
And there is also the possibility of 2 versions. 1 LTE version exclusive to VZW and then the version for everyone else. If VZW gets a timed exclusive launch, there is a better chance for that version to have the OMAP, while the later version for Tmo/sprint uses an exynos 4212 chip.
Either which way, its gonna be a killer phone.. but id rather have the best of the best, not just upper high end.. then again, im a specs/tech geek from hell.. lol.
216. roldefol posted on 07 Oct 2011, 13:37 0 0
I keep going back to the "pace car" argument. And you're calling it a "major release from Samsung", but aren't the Nexus phones more a Google release? I think that's where people are off the mark regarding the Prime. It's NOT a Galaxy SII variant, it's a Nexus.
You may be onto something regarding two versions though. The OMAP4 is a proven chip with LTE in the Bionic, and since Verizon is bound to slap the DROID moniker on the Prime instead of Nexus... it would make more sense. It would also explain the conflicting specs from yesterday.
217. remixfa posted on 07 Oct 2011, 13:41 0 0
generally the nexus devices have not been a major release, your right.
that had nothing to do with the phone and everything to do with them not being available through regular channels. With this release, if the rumors hold true, its going to be in regular stores front and center. If thats the case, then it its most certainly a major release.
This is the phone they are going to put beside the i4s and even the SGS2 in a head to head competition. Thats where my train of thought lies. So if thats the case, then yea, it would be very out of character for samsung to have a major release not be "samsung" product only.
hopefully the delayed announcement wont be too delayed. I was very excited to finally put all this rumor mongering to rest and figure out what it was really made of.
221. roldefol posted on 07 Oct 2011, 13:57 0 0
I think it depends on how it's marketed. If it's in stores as the Google Nexus Prime, that takes some of the burden off Samsung to deliver the fastest product. And Verizon has been presenting DROID as a unified brand despite using 3 different manufacturers (each with their own skin). I still don't think the Prime needs to be the fastest thing out there, but I'm not a specs geek. I just want the best Google experience I can get in an attractive (AMOLED HD) package.
224. remixfa posted on 07 Oct 2011, 14:41 0 0
there is a definite point to that comment about the branding with google and VZW. ICS and HD have me sold already.. lol. I would be remiss if it didnt have the top technology, because not only as a tech geek would i be disappointed a bit, but it would be breaking one of the traditions of then nexus line.
229. MichaelHeller posted on 07 Oct 2011, 16:46 0 0
I hadn't seen any rumors of it being Exynos recently. It doesn't seem like a very Googley thing to have an Exynos in one and not the other. Seems like someone in the rumor mill just really wants Exynos, but there's no real reason to believe it'll be in there.
239. remixfa posted on 07 Oct 2011, 21:21 0 0
there have been multiple rumors from multiple sources now that say its an exynos 4212 chip in there instead of the omap. the 4212 is capable of 1.5ghz and LTE/HSPA+. GSM arena reiterated that the other day when they called BS on BGR's rumored 1.2ghz omap specs, though i dont think the switch to powerVR is so likely.
and yes, of course i am hoping thats the true rumor!! lol its smaller, faster, and better battery! :) :)
241. roldefol posted on 07 Oct 2011, 21:49 0 0
If this processor was just introduced last week and will be shipping samples 4Q11, I highly highly doubt it will be in a device arriving in the next few weeks. I think people get confused between the SoC sampling date and the street date. For example, the OMAP 4460 sampled in 1Q11 but will be in devices 4Q11.
I'm afraid the next generation of ~30 nm, LTE-built-in chips (Exynos 4212, Snapdragon MSM8960) are several months away.
242. remixfa posted on 08 Oct 2011, 06:30 0 0
no, im aware of the difference trust me.. lol. Im just going by the rumors. We all have a "rumor version" that we would like to be true, and that is mine. Unfortunately now we have to wait a lil while longer to find out. boo!! lol.
i just think it should be included in the rumor list since its been picking up steam lately, thats all.
243. roldefol posted on 08 Oct 2011, 07:26 0 0
And yet some of us (it was either you or thump3r or both) kept talking about the MSM8960 going into the Vigor as if it MUST be true (because otherwise it won't be a top-shelf product). Knowing how the phone industry works, is it so hard to believe companies will keep using tried-and-true but slower processors in new products?
245. remixfa posted on 08 Oct 2011, 14:40 0 0
knowing how the phone industry works, yea if they are going after the high end, tried and true products dont exist.. its all about pushing up the clock speed or adjusting it in some way to make it faster than the phones from the month prior.
The tried and true chips become "upper end" and then "middle" and so forth. Tried and true means its been around a while.. in the tech industry that negates it from the top of the line as it evolves so quickly. Nothing wrong with tried and true chips at all.. but it doesnt belong on the top end.
249. roldefol posted on 08 Oct 2011, 23:22 0 0
In the cases of the Prime and Vigor, they ARE pushing the specs up, at least on paper. Most likely the Vigor will have a 1.5 Ghz MSM8660, and the Prime a 1.2-1.5 Ghz OMAP4460. You and I both know that clock speed doesn't tell the whole story, but a lot of people only look at the specs on paper. What I mean by sticking with the tried and true is the Vigor using the same basic SoC that went into the Sensation and EVO 3D, and the Prime using the same chip family as the D3 and Bionic.
250. remixfa posted on 09 Oct 2011, 00:50 0 0
no i get ya.. and mostly i agree. its the whole "nexus" moniker that is a sticking point . nexus's arent filled with "tried and true". they are filled with "brand spanking new" or "the tippy top of the line available". thats the reason i think there is a good chance in an exynos gen 2. maybe not a great chance, but its a chance none the less.
251. roldefol posted on 09 Oct 2011, 08:30 0 0
In the case of the Nexus One I agree with you, that was the first major release with a Snapdragon. But the Nexus S has the same Hummingbird that powered the Galaxy S released the previous summer. That made it somewhat of a letdown, but it illustrates Google's overall strategy for Nexus: it's the vanguard of that particular Android release. Google was effectively saying if you want to run Eclair/Froyo smoothly, you'll need a 1 Ghz single core and for Gingerbread a really fast 1 Ghz single core. By picking the OMAP4 as the reference standard for ICS, they're setting a benchmark, not shattering one.
And that's why I say Michael's right about the Prime having an OMAP 4460, not an Exynos gen 2.
252. remixfa posted on 09 Oct 2011, 15:20 0 0
lol, we dont know who is "right" until it is officially announced. we have heard the OMAP rumors much more often, but repetition doesnt make it true. I think many learned that with the rumors around the i4s/i5 and all its "guaranteed" rumors that turned out to be junk.
what ever it is, unless its utter crap, there is a 95% chance of me getting it if it comes to regular tmobile stores... OMAP or eyxnos 4212.
I spent so much time hacking my last few phones that maybe having a nexus with all the new toys on it already would slow me down a bit.... well.. just a little bit.. lol

Do you actually have stock in the company?
I have stock in MMI
I have an iPhone (three actually, incl. my wife's)
I will probably upgrade to Nexus Prime for me and
iPhone 4s for wife and will still use my iPhone 1st
gen. on wifi as an iPod w/ a great stock app.
I hope I won't have to keep th iPhone 4s and the

Just wondering what everyone thinks which device is better, the Samsung Droid Prime or Motorola Droid RAZR?
234. roldefol posted on 07 Oct 2011, 18:02 0 0
Per current rumors, the RAZR will have a qHD screen where the Prime is 720p HD. The RAZR will likely launch with Gingerbread and Moto's custom UI, not ICS. Otherwise comparable devices specwise but completely different shape and feel to each.

Without doing any phone research i ordered a droid bionic and sold my droid-x so i wouldnt have to pay a dime. I waited eagerly for it to arrive but the Fed Ex guy put a note on my door that said delivery requires signature (i was home that day and did not hear a knock) This means that i would have to wait 3 more days to get the package because it was a friday. So i drove a half hour and got to fedex before they closed and got the package.
Chapter 2: I get the bionic, and right away am shocked by the pentile display. I wanted to return it right away. I decided i would wait for the iphone 5 or droid prime. So 14 days later (verizons return policy is only 14 days long) i went to a verizon store and returned it. They charged a 35 dollar restocking fee and i got $235 back (originally payed $271)
Chapter 3: I activate an old blackberry and use it as a dummy phone while i wait for the iphone 5, then i discover that the iphone 4s came out instead of the 5 so that made me not want an iphone. Then i read the news about the prime being delayed and realized screw it, i bet the prime wont come out for another year with my luck... So now i walk down the road to radioshack and find out they have a $100 sale on all smartphones. The bionic was on display for $199 with a 30 day return policy.
The question is.. Should i buy another droid bionic and use the 30 day return policy (no restocking fee) so i can surf through the waiting time of upcoming phones?? Or should i just buy a bionic, keep it, and convince myself that i like it?
240. roldefol posted on 07 Oct 2011, 21:27 0 0
Some people here will tell you you'll "get used to" the Bionic's PenTile screen, but when you're buying a phone on a 2-year contract, I suggest you don't settle. Don't give up on the Prime either; the press event may have been delayed (likely out of respect for Steve Jobs' legacy) but the phone could still be delivered late Oct/early Nov as planned.
The Radio Shack deal complicates things a bit; I'm in the same boat as I'll be able to upgrade on the 15th, the last day of the sale. I'd rather wait for the Prime, but if I can take advantage of that $100 off deal, I feel I should. I might be able to exchange for the Prime within the 30 days, but I don't know if they'll make me forfeit the $100 discount.
Bottom lines: a) Don't settle for a phone you don't like; and b) If possible, wait to see the phone in person at a VZW store before you commit.
