Nexus One hacked ROM expected to offer multi-touch & tethering
Not wasting any time after the official announcement of the Nexus One, there’s already work underway in creating a hacked ROM that’ll provide some much loved features. Arch-modder, cyanogen, has gone on the record and promising one of the first tweaked ROMS that’ll offer tethering and multi-touch web browsing. The tethering capability will allow you to do it on either Wi-Fi or wired connections while an additional feature called BusyBox will be thrown on to give other hackers more flexibility for playing with the Nexus One’s underlying code. We’d expect cyanogen is feverishly at pace right now getting this hacked ROM up and running – with a release coming shortly.

The android phones are capable of it, just it is not used in the stock Android software. Andorid Market has Dolphin Browser if you really really really need multi touch in a browser... tho i find it easier myself to 2 tap then covering my phone with my hand to pinch.
