Nexus 4 launch is a failure for Google Play

0. phoneArena 13 Nov 2012, 12:24 posted on

Fair warning: we tried to purchase a Nexus 4 from the Google Play Store when it went on sale today in the US, and were unable to purchase one, so there is a fair chance that this article will be a touch angry. That said, the Nexus 4 launch today was a complete failure for the Google Play Store...

I got the N4 16gig without an issue today. Made sure my google wallet had all the right info and have been tapping refresh like clockwork for hrs. I didnt even know it was supposed to go live at 12p EST. Just kept on clickin. It took me like 5 seconds to hit "purchase", click my address and CC on file and have it sent. Confirmation was instant in my email.

Talking to others it took up to 45 mins for a confirmation message to appear if you just let it sit there, so the key is patience I guess. As long as you dont refresh from the confirmation screen or back out of it, you dont lose your spot.. you just have to wait for the system to catch up.

That said I think the biggest failure was lack of preordering and lack of a refulfillment Q where we could all just pay for it and get it shipped as they become available. Without it, this mess is gonna happen mutliple times as phones come into stock and then are sold out again.

I did the same thing, but after getting the phone in my shopping cart, and going through the checkout process, there was an error, the order was cancelled, and the phone disappeared. Worse, this happened more than once.

and THAT really sucks big time.

I just cant fathom why they dont have a preorder/waiting Q. This is gonna be a stupid recycling of this morning over and over again each time the phone comes back for sale and then gets sold out again otherwise.

Judging from others I've talked to, apparently I'm the only one where everything went according to plan on. Literally it was click click, confirmation email.

So how did you know it went on early? Did you see my G+ post this morning? lol

i would say the only drawback for this phone is sd card slot not being there especially for the 8gig... cloud storage is a great idea minus the layperson not knowing how to use it and even if they do cloud syncing eats up data when streaming first hand streaming music vs playing it from phone or sd card memory is a huge battery drain.plus when customers come in from one phone to the other that little black card holds all the info for them easy switch one of the reasons why the htc one s doesnt sell

The problem wasn't the infrastructure ( no company's infrastructure could have held up to the volume of traffic it was receiving )
Google are sell a high spec ( apart from its storage ) for at least half the price it should be.
effectively it the same as a fire sale which the infrastructure could probably have dealt with.
The real problem was the fact the after announcing it and its price Google didn't allow pre order immediately, instead it allowed every man and his dog to know about this offer and when it would start.
Whoever was responsible for that should be sack for not seeing that the very problem that happened would happen

And iPhonearena does it again....

Run out of stock and server issues are pretty normal for high number of access.... You'd probably be more pleased if you waited a week on a like to buy some old fashion piece of junk...

Pretty sure an Apple fan wouldn't have put themselves through what I did today in an effort to buy a Nexus phone, but thanks for tossing your own bias my way!

So Apple server crash when IP4S released isnt a big failure and all the apples fans was happy about it?
At least Googles server didnt crashed out like Aplles server did and peoples can still have a chance to get thiers orders through.
Huge demands always means server problems and everyone already expected these kind of server problem, when all knew Nexus 4/10 will get released today.

I'm just annoyed at every jackass who comments that this is iPhoneArena just because we point out when Google screws up.

I was one of the lucky ones who got an order in. I had been watching like a hawk starting last night. I just wish they had an option for overnight shipping.

I just bought my 16gb Nexus 4 at 243 Central time. They are NOT sold out, Im guessing they are making so many available every hour after release. Keep up the F5 guys, they are still there!

They definitely aren't sold out, I just got one as well. Oddly, I switched to Firefox and for the first time, the phone didn't disappear from my cart. Something weird is happening with Chrome, I guess.

hey, happy endings. :)

Maybe it was just their order system crashing or something.

This mean your going to amend your story to "mostly failure" ? lol

Nope. It's still a failure if it takes almost 5 hours, endless refreshes, a useless call to tech support, and myriad close calls where the item mysteriously disappears from the shopping cart.

Comparisons are stupid. It was also better than being shot in the kneecap, but that doesn't make it any less of a bungle by Google.

As for me, I am ALL DONE with Google, period. I have been a loyal Nexus user since the first Nexus S and I was so ready for the new Nexus 4 and these clueless idiots at Google have ruined it for me.

I wasted two hours of my time trying to buy a lousy phone from one of the worlds largest comapnies with the largest servers to boot and I had the phone in my basket and the system kicked me out for NO REASON.

I am a self employed business person myself and if I would have spent the time promotting this product like Google has for the last several weeks and when it can time to deliver it to my waiting customers and I coudld'nt, I would be OUT OF BUSINESS PERIOD.

I called the Google store the day before and they said the site owuld be open at 9:00 AM PST which is 12 noon my time and I was stunned to find that they jumped the gun and open it a half hour early.

As soo as I can get through to the Google play store, I am cancelling my account and I took the money I was going to buy the Nexus 4 with and bought an IPhone 5. One more loayal customer lost to the competion because you can't deliver. Sad

That is a lot of time invested typing your dissatisfaction. Kind of a waste of time. I'm sure I'm not the only one who says "See ya! No one cares!" I'm sure the Nexus 4 you would have bought will be bought by someone else. Plus if you really were a Nexus owner who knew the freedom of an open OS I don't think you could stand locked down iOS. Really you should just calm down because in the end you're just hurting yourself...

This is why I never try to buy a product on RELEASE day, yet alone within the first few minutes of the device becoming available online! Nexus 4 has the latest specs, latest android software, and no carrier bs all at the reasonable price of 299-350 dollars, yes you should come to expect and understand there might be thousands of people trying to order it from ALL OVER THE WORLD at the EXACT same time and that will cause major server problems.

AGREED!! I never see the point of getting a product on release day. Be the first ones to get it? For what? Bragging rights? Sound pretty foolish to spend so much time to get something that will be available to everyone eventually. If it's like a Chrome or Diamond ultimate collectible version that comes with a big green giant Android that would do your house chores, then I'd understand...

I try not to order on release day. You get to get all the bugs and the least amount of accessories/specials.

I didnt really have the luxury of waiting a month since my trusty SGS1 took a death nap.

On the flip side been running my daughters WP7.5 phone. I forgot how nice it was.
If I ever get to a point where I no longer need the extra google integration or want to tinker, Windows Phone is prob where I'll go.
