Nexus 4 and Nexus 10: what our writers think

When it comes to technology, or everything else in life, everyone has their own opinion. No two people are completely the same, and what is cool for one person can be simply boring for another...

he thinks apple is God
ray nexus devices are guideline to OEMs
did you see LG Prada 3.0 ? very pretty as nexus 4 is
think before you write anything
"small group of geeky users" yep like 68% of smartphone users
even my mother said that android is very logical and easy and it is first phone that she can send sms from
10. someones4 (Posts: 622; Member since: 16 Sep 2012)
True. Google is moving in the direction that Ray described. While Apple stuff may arguably have a better design, thay do not have 'killer specs'. Apple's specs can be easily surpassed by other OEMs.

Exactly, its nice to see a different design and feel every now n then rather than using a 5 year old ecosystem and design....
BTW, I had to change my comment or else I wud have been banned but u got the point right ! ;)
22. PhenomFaz (Posts: 1168; Member since: 26 Sep 2012)
Ray has always been definitely pro-apple.
Ray what game are you talking about? Better specs mean better functionality not to mention android has a kiler ecosystem! Granted apple's eco may be more advanced at this stage but android ecosystems are compatible with Windows which 88.14% of the pc owners use!
For example if I have to keep two phones I would go in for an android and windows phones with an android tablet because they can work great with my windows pc as both these ecosystems are compatible with each other!
Ray are you telling us that Apple products sold as many as they have because of their fashionable design? Please! Apple customers are not that shallow...everyone looks for a mix of style and functionality and Google is giving just that with the Nexi devices!
26. Ray.S (Posts: 274; Member since: 19 Jul 2011)
I think the vast majority of people buying iPhones does not use much of the phone's functionality. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course, just saying.
28. Aeires (unregistered)
+1, probably right about using the full features. I'd say a lot of Android users don't use all their features either.
30. Retro-touch (Posts: 268; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
I have to wholeheartedly agree with this, most people use the basic functions and Apple does them very well, though Android is now entering the realm of pure excellence by giving fluidity, options, great design and great pricing
64. Hemlocke (unregistered)
What Android device, of any type, features "great design"? I'm guessing you like Kia cars if you think that loads of cheap-feeling plastic evokes "great design."
72. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9848; Member since: 14 May 2012)
One X, LG Nexus 4, Xperia TL, Droid RAZR HD MAXX to just name a few.
And no, I'm more of a Lexus guy. Kia Sonata 2012 has a beautiful design btw.
75. housry23 (Posts: 107; Member since: 03 Jun 2012)
Are you the same Hemlocke on XDA? If that's the case I know for a fact you like and own Android devices.
87. AndroidShiz (Posts: 154; Member since: 08 Nov 2011)
The LG Nexus has great design. I actually traded in my Mercedes GLK for a Sorrento SX. No regrets whatsoever. My Mercedes had just as much plastic. Then again the iPhone 3G/S also was mostly plastic, but no one complained because it was ......(wait for it) magical. People complain about plastic, yet plastic is designed into almost everything from medical equipment, to the most expensive cars. Please show me the latest plastics and how they're ruining our lives.

Call me selfish, but i could care less what the majority uses as far as features. I really like where google is going, and I'm not the only one.
36. jeck77 (Posts: 25; Member since: 09 Dec 2010)
68%? Where'd you come up with that number? You really believe that "geeky users" make up 68% of the smartphone market? Do you understand that there's over a billion smartphones being used in the world (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/global-smartphone-usage-tops-1-122000484.html)? So there are 680million users of smartphones that you would classify as "geeky users"?
As someone once wrote on a tech blog, "Think before you write anything."

you have to read and think
about 68% of smartphones sold are android so i make fun of rays

I have a theory, Phonearena writers think that design of the galaxy nexus 10 sucks
2. hung2900 (Posts: 884; Member since: 02 Mar 2012)
For me, Nexus 10 + Note2 are the best couple ever.
3. darkkjedii (Posts: 15623; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Great phone and tablet, but its the prices that r the real killer.
23. rawkuss (Posts: 29; Member since: 02 Nov 2012)
The hardware is where it is at. They are giving others a better choice to spend their hard earn money. The only reason why the prices seem great is because Apple prices are "normal" to the masses.
65. Hemlocke (unregistered)
Pay less money, and get less value. Makes sense. The iPhone 5 outclasses the N4 in every way, and aside from resolution, the iPad 4 destroys the N10.
66. ReddD (Posts: 37; Member since: 29 Oct 2012)
so you're saying I should pay more money for less and get ripped off, then brainwashed to say its ok? The truth is that, if the iphone was priced competitively as the midrange phone that it is. no-one would have a problem with it, but Apple are greedy and want to charge ridiculous amounts of money for it.
70. Hemlocke (unregistered)
"Midrange"? The SGS3 is priced very close to the iPhone 5, but costs less to build. The iPhone 5 outperforms the Android flagship (by sales volume) in almost every measurable metric, so what does that make EVERY OTHER Android phone? What does that make Samsung?
68. aahmed215 (Posts: 133; Member since: 18 Jun 2012)
Are you ignorant? How does the iPhone 5 outclass the Nexus 4 in every way? Let's take a look...
- 1.5 GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 v 1.2 GHz
- 2 GB RAM v 1 GB RAM
- 2100 mAh battery v 1440 mAh battery
- 4.7' display v 4' display
- NFC v no NFC
- Rear camera is the same (though the Nexus 4 offers more software features)
- Front camera: 1.3 MP v 1.2 MP
- Android 4.2 v iOS 6. Enough said!
The only things iPhone beats it in is pixel density (very sligthly), 4G (but for a lot of people 4G isn't available), and a 32/64 GB storage option. So clearly, the iPhone 5 does NOT outclass the N4 in every way (not even in most ways). And for a superior device (both in hardware and software), you pay half the value.
69. Hemlocke (unregistered)
- The iPhone 5 beats the N4 in more benchmarks
- Useless, because Android requires more to even run
- The iPhone 5 has better battery life
- Size is a preference, not an advantage
- LTE has more availability than NFC
- The cameras may be the same, but the Optimus G has not been accorded to be in the same class
- Same as above
73. PapaSmurf (Posts: 9848; Member since: 14 May 2012)
-It doesn't take a powerful CPU to run an app launcher. The difference in speed in the 4S to the iPhone 5 is minimal. Android, on the other hand, when paired with Project Butter and a quad core CPU, makes the phone fly.
-Same as above
-Battery life on the Nexus should last all day thanks to the S4 Pro
-Size is a preference, yes, but reading things from a tiny screen makes me cringe
-I'm pretty sure Google is going to release a LTE model like they did with the Galaxy Nexus. Give it time. It took Apple almost two years to join in on the LTE fun.
-I rather have camera options and features out of the gate than a simple option for HDR or "Panorama," which took a year. 360 Panorama > 180.
-Android 4.2 is a good enough reason to explain why its better than iOS 6. It's so far ahead Apple has been playing catch up since 2010 and has failed to deliver users the true OS experience. Maybe next year in iOS 7 you might be able to change your keyboard.
Anything else you want me to explain to you?
76. E.N. (Posts: 2577; Member since: 25 Jan 2009)
Dude, the only thing amazing about the Nexus 4 is the price and that's it. If someone was in the market for the best phone it would be iPhone 5 or the Galaxy Note/SIII NOT the Nexus 4. I can see the point of releasing this phone (targeting different price points), but this is nothing to get giddy over.
I might buy the Nexus 4 off-contract though.....if I lose my iPhone.
84. aahmed215 (Posts: 133; Member since: 18 Jun 2012)
- That's pointless to me if the iPhone can't run the same features as Android. Once you jailbreak the iPhone so you can begin to come close to Android's features, it's slower. With a stock version of Android and Project Butter, the N4 will be fast and smooth.
- The iPhone 5 doesn't have a better battery life. And even if it did, it would be a neglible difference and also pointless for the same above reason.
- LTE might be more available than NFC, but you are comparing apples to oranges. Having NFC is an advantage over not having it. Without LTE, you can still run at a good speed on 3G. There isn't an alternative to NFC (especially with iPhone's limited usage of Bluetooth).

did phonearena get a review unit for the Nexus 4 and 10?

Am I the only one who scrolled through trying to find Ray S' opinion to check whether it was as predictable as usual?
29. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
yep keep telling that to yourself
it is difference between good writer who knows stuff and see it and someone always loving apple
look at anandtech and Gnote2 test
guy writes that he has iphone 5 and (I think) he always had iphone but he says that after 1 week of using gnote he thinks of buying it and see it as great phone
you on the other hand always love apple no matter what
R U russian? because people there are poor and if somebody can buy iphone 5 he buys it for status and to show he is better than others
43. VJo003 (Posts: 350; Member since: 11 Mar 2012)
That was in poor taste.
No need to get personal dude!!!

he has to be objective if he wants to write something that many people read!
he has influence on readers an he knows it, he want everybody to love his beloved company
77. E.N. (Posts: 2577; Member since: 25 Jan 2009)
I think you guys are just comfortable with hearing everybody saying the same exact things over and over that as soon as something is not the usually "yay everything Google does is so amazing!! I'm so proud" or "boo iPhone sucks" there's automatically a red flag. He's entitled to have his own opinion. Since when does "objective" mean agreeing with everyone else? And I actually agree with his opinion. Others are saying that this phone is a gamechanger (really???). How the hell am I suppose to get excited for a phone like this? lol.
" Personally, I'd like to see Google take Android in a new direction - where design and style will be just as important as functionality and customizeability. I'd like to see Google act a bit more like Microsoft nowadays - guiding its hardware partners into designing better, higher-quality products."
-- seems like a reasonable comment.
This phone is not exciting AT ALL. If you want the best deal, buy this phone. If you want the best smartphone, look elsewhere. Ultimately, this phone is unimpressive.
78. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
you are mistaken, i was disappointed with nexus 4 and 10 browser benchmarks and iphone 5 was really impresive! objective mean that you can like some of the best androids because sometimes, maybe very rare but they are good phones. ray always hate android. many times he write articles not only apple vs android, sometimes only about android and he gives arguments that android must suck, it is sick. if you agree with him that means you love apple no matter what. As i wrote before i can respect guy ho has iphone and love it but can test android and say it is good too but in little different way, ray always say android is worse. I wouldn't write that nexus 4 and 10 are game changers , but little they are. nexus 10 is first with cortex a15 and nexus 4 ie extremely cheap, but that's it. And i love that lg make nexus because lg and apple are pals so nexus 4 is unsueable or apple will lose another supplier. Android is open, google is guiding them with nexus line but that's it, because android is open source google can't do anythink about it. and dude this phone is little impresive, 2gb ram, nice looks(i know you hate this), in cell touch panel, 4core s4. i know every asprect of iphone and every part, and actually iphone 5 was forst iphone to little impress me with build lightness and cpu. You really are apple fanboy, you cant like good things in android. on the other hand i can see good things in iphone.
79. E.N. (Posts: 2577; Member since: 25 Jan 2009)
Well Im talking about the Nexus 4, not so much the Nexus 10 since I think all tablets are stupid (yes that means iPad too).
"One should not have any doubts that the LG Nexus 4 and Samsung Nexus 10 are remarkable devices as far as technology goes. Both feature super-fast chipsets and have lovely screens, especially the Nexus 10, which is the first tablet to surpass the iPad in terms of pixel density. "
- doesn't seem like he hates it
Earlier I said "If someone was in the market for the best phone it would be iPhone 5 or the Galaxy Note/SIII NOT the Nexus 4". Not a fanboy, just don't think this phone is great. I think Ray's review was fair.
82. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)
but doesn't love it either
for example (on i believe anandtech) guy say that it may be pentile (screen on n10) so ipads ~3mp vs ~4mp-1/3=2.67mp so ipad can have more pixels
every person has different needs
if you dont care about storage and want good phone, fastest on the market, great screen and not so expensive the best will be nexus 4
for me the best is note 2 and i love its 2 gb ram and cpu overclocked to 1,8ghz + undervolt
that is good review for example
you have pros and cons and the point is that for the money it is the best, and you know that engadget loves iphone
7. someones4 (Posts: 622; Member since: 16 Sep 2012)
All very valid points. Both nexus 10 and 4 are great devices. I will certainly pick up the nexus 10.
Really disappointed that there aren't multiple nexus devices.
8. housry23 (Posts: 107; Member since: 03 Jun 2012)
Verizon ruined the Nexus. LTE is a battery hog. I broke my Verizon contract to go with the Galaxy Nexus on Straight Talk. I will be refreshing the Play Store at midnight on launch day and buying the Nexus 4 to use on STraight Talk. Unlimited everything for $45 a month, an amazing device at an amazing price with no contract. I don't mind that they left out LTE, but I can see why it is important for some, but HSPA+ is quite fast for mobile and suits my every need. The only bad thing I see is because of the pricing, Google has seriously affected the resale value of all other phones. I9300 was fetching $500+ just a week ago, now you're lucky to get $400 for it. Galaxy Nexus was still going for $300 used, now your lucky to get $225 for it.
9. PackMan (Posts: 277; Member since: 09 Mar 2012)
"The key for the Nexus 10 will be its price point, since specification-wise, there is not much that differentiates it from other tablets."--Max R.
It is the specifications of Nexus 10 that separates it from other tablets.

Agreed, Apple still makes huge points to let people know about Retina displays. Now the N10 has even higher resolutions than Retina, that's huge.
16. housry23 (Posts: 107; Member since: 03 Jun 2012)
Yes Apple markets the "retina" display very well. What's funny is all the retina display is, is an IPS+ LCD which is on several other devices as well and even some before the iPhone 4S. Apple is genius when it comes to marketing and back it up by making great products everyone can just pick up and use. I prefer Android, but Apple really does appeal to the average user. Sad thing is, that when Android was young it got a rep of being hard to use. But, now that it has matured, it is easier to use than iOS in many aspects in my opinion, but because of its that perception, some people still shy away from it.
17. rusticguy (Posts: 2828; Member since: 11 Aug 2012)
Linux creator Linus Torvalds on "Retina Display": -
So with even a $399 tablet doing 2560 x 1600 pixel displays, can we please just make that the new standard laptop resolution. Even at 11”? Stop with the ‘retina’ crap, just call it ‘reasonable resolution’.
14. jan25 (Posts: 448; Member since: 26 Feb 2012)
newest Exynos chipset, a screen resolution no where to be found in any other tablet, 9 mAh, thin profile.. just the usual stuff.
20. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
Yeah, just an insignificant double the CPU power and five times the GPU power of Tegra 3
71. Hemlocke (unregistered)
...but still less powerful than the chips found in the iPhone 5 and iPad 4.
81. ReddD (Posts: 37; Member since: 29 Oct 2012)
source? seeing as the A6 can't beat the tegra 3, i find this hard to believe.
19. darac (Posts: 2156; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
I just wanted to quote the same thing!!
LOL , really interesting observations, Max
21. PackMan (Posts: 277; Member since: 09 Mar 2012)
I wonder how it will run Ubuntu 12. Nexus 7 really has a hard time with Unity.
80. E.N. (Posts: 2577; Member since: 25 Jan 2009)
But you guys represent the same people that downplayed the retina display and made it seem like it wasn't anything too essential. And now you guys want it emphasized now that Nexus 10 leads in that category. I'm seeing flip flopping all over the place.
32. denied911 (banned) (Posts: 361; Member since: 31 May 2012)

it eats apple for breakfast

I agree with Michael's points the most but Victor had a great one about Google ads helping bring this all to fruition.
Ray, 64% of world market share is NOT geeky users. To get that much market, you have to be selling devices to every type of person, not just a clique.
15. PhansMuneeb (Posts: 362; Member since: 28 Jan 2012)
LG exec. has confirmed it is coming in India end of November....
Can i purchase Nexus 4 in local stores or it is only available in Play Store....
37. ZEUS.the.thunder.god (unregistered)
I dont think it will be available in Play Store as we dont have a fully functional Play Store in India. It has to be through LG stores but I guess it would be priced INR 25 K or more. If they dont launch it in India or its priced higher then I will try to get one from States.
