New browser being developed by Samsung and Mozilla

0. phoneArena 03 Apr 2013, 14:18 posted on

Samsung and Mozilla are said to be working together on a new browser called Servo that is being built from the bottom up using Mozilla's code language called Rust with the ultimate goal of making the browser available for Android and ARM; Rust itself is in its primitive days with version .6 released today and thus far Samsung has contributed an ARM infrastructure allowing Mozilla to cross-compile to Android...

" Samsung is keeping Tizen around , to let Google know who really is responsible for Android's success and to make Google concerned that at anytime, Samsung could take its ball back and go home."
That's the most appaling piece i've heard today!
Google should leave Samsung and see that it can still be successful without them.
Should've left them with BADA from the start! Rubbish.

"Samsung continues to flex its muscles in front of Google to let the Mountain View based tech titan know that the Korean OEM is not a Google hand puppet playing in the Android Theater. It is the same reason why Samsung is keeping Tizen around, to let Google know who really is responsible for Android's success and to make Google concerned that at anytime, Samsung could take its ball back and go home."

Based on what, Alan?

According to Mozilla, the pair wants to take advantage of the coming "faster, multi-core, heterogeneous computing architectures."

^ I like that. But still, I wonder why Mozilla wants to create another browser, likely to be utilized heavily by Samsung as yet another competitor to Firefox itself?

Samsung without Android is = to Cereal without Milk. Android is to established, to liked, to respected. If Windows Phone or Blackberry, cannot slow down Android, how can Tizen or some new browser expect to?

You are right. Before starting android Samsung was nothing. Hope they didn't forget that. And Samsung didn't made android a huge platform but android made Samsung as a no.1 smartphone maker....

Actually Android led to Samsung's success, but its also true that Samsung pushed Android to major success in so many ways!

Great example of mutual success!

I call this biting the hand that feeds you. Samsung you're a great hardware maker, stick to that. Now you see the profits Google is racking up with android/chrome and you want in on that market now. Samsung is taking this copying thing to new levels. There's no originality coming from Samsung these days.

I assume this browser may be for pure business users on Android. Still businesses are away from Google Chrome due to privacy concerns. Servo may be default browser for businesses on Android.

This is just Mozilla's way of getting into Samsung's pants and good side, so Samsung makes a Firefox OS phone.

I understand Samsung fears, and I understand why they are trying to keep Tizen and develop their own software and apps, after all, Google acquired Motorola to build their own Nexus and hardware, so Google is the one responsible in frighten up manufacturers.

If you're going that way, let me tell you... Samsung started with Tizen before Google acquired Motorola.
If in not wrong, development of Tizen started late 2011 and Google acquired Motorola summer of 2012.
Samsung can't be threatened by Google before knowing Google will buy Motorola.
Your theory is questionable.

I think Samsung should support Ubuntu. Firefox OS app is HTML5 based. It's not as powerful as java. IMO Ubuntu is more promising than Tizen & Firefox OS

It's good to have someone keep Google in check lest they become Arrogant like Apple which they will if unchecked because as they say POWER CORRUPTS Even the most noble entity. Why feel bad if Samsung is doing anything ... if they have the might they will do it. I would say "COUNTER" it ... Samsung should also embrace UBUNTU.

That said, there should be few to challenge both Google and Samsung and no one should be indispensable .. Samsung knows that real market is BRIC nations and out of this CHINA doesn't care about Google and android so time to make quick switch :)

I dont give a s**t about sammy. Becoz of Android Samsung got success, not the other way around. Samsung should be thankful of Android. Samsung can quit making android phones anytime. Google has MOTO, HTC, LG, Sony, Asus and Lenovo. Samsung cant leave android because they know they are nothing w/o android. they are finished. Lets be honest here Tizen is not gonna be as successful as other os. I see Android and ubuntu going to be success in future.

There can be only one Servo... And that's Tom Servo, neither of which Samsung nor Mozilla are cool enough to besmirch the name of!
