New York citizens seem to prefer iPhone over Android

0. phoneArena posted on 19 Nov 2012, 04:28

YouTube show Rocketboom has hit the streets of New York City to see exactly where the people's loyalties lie when it comes to mobile operating systems. In this improvised battle between iPhone and Android, it turns out that most people are still preferring Apple's OS for various reasons...

IPhone is a phone
Android is an operating system
What kind of comparison is this?

I'm not surprised this is a Ray article. Anything to keep apple in mind? You did such a good job on the Nokia Lumia 820 article, too.

That said, being a NYC resident isn't a ticket to Mensa. How many videos are there of New Yorkers being asked questions on the street and not knowing? Heck, there was one asking what date 9/11 referred to and a lot didn't know. It's a city of millions who don't realize that they can live elsewhere for cheaper, more comfort, and smaller (if any) crowds, pollution, etc. I realize some businesses are based there but in the days of easy and free video conferencing and interstate travel living in a large city is mostly unnecessary. Suburbs, sure, but less so the city itself.

Plastic People liking iPhone as usual and Ray to boot up the article!

2. eisenbricher posted on 19 Nov 2012, 04:35 3

I agree to the article. Real world scenario is lot different than what we people see in the comments below the tech site articles. Those who bother to conquer for their camp know why they love the specific platform/os. And sadly their number is much less than the 'normal' people who just want to flaunt their phones, but don't do much besides making calls/texting or light entertainment use.

Well, works for them anyway. No one can and should complain. I am myself a Nokia fan and whenever I tell someone abt the 920 getting all excited, I find that 95% of 'em don't seem to know it, or mistake it for the old 800 or 900. Same in the case of WP8.

22. Nathan_ingx posted on 19 Nov 2012, 07:44 3

Chances are, most of them don't know or haven't tried Android. Might be a l'le complicated than iOS, but that's the point...it's more intuitive, more satisfying and what's the best part? You can customize it to the point where you call it simple.

27. Cynipap999 (banned) posted on 19 Nov 2012, 08:22 4 2

Well I disagree. Talk about an "uncontrolled" and "unscientific" study; they hit Washington Square Park / NYU territory; of course all those misfits prefer iPhones as, they're a host of young mindless students who still can't think for themselves. If they really wanted an accurate poll of New Yorkers and what New Yorkers prefer they should have hit the subways. The show should be renamed RocketBust. Ironically, all those iPhone owners they polled, if their on the newer iOS versions, can't get Youtube anyway. This poll was really dim witted!!

3. luckysrinu posted on 19 Nov 2012, 04:41

it must be ios and andriod, Right?

4. uchihakurtz posted on 19 Nov 2012, 04:47 5 9

IMHO, iOS is just easy to use so it targets more users whilst Android, on the other hand, requires at least a little bit of understanding on technology and definitely targets geeks and people who are interested and wants to learn more about their device(s), instead of just using it.

6. PhoneArenaUser posted on 19 Nov 2012, 05:08 12 3

Not true.

7. anywherehome posted on 19 Nov 2012, 05:10 13 5

its a myth....iOS is really more difficult, see comparison in managing both OSs:
goo [dot] gl/ZuTmL

Apple has just brainwashed people to think iOS is simpler

:)

28. Cynipap999 (banned) posted on 19 Nov 2012, 08:25 1 3

I agree with you because, it's just so damn difficult to find that "Home" button when one gets lost in that expansive and complex UI.

48. anywherehome posted on 19 Nov 2012, 23:21 1

do you mean this?
goo.gl/esqKX
are you kidding or just st*pid? :)

and you do not need to use the "expansive" UI, you have just a choice with Android to set up anything....with iPhone you have nothing, just limited f*scism without proper maps, with poor Siri, boring icons, inconsistent UI etc :)

14. uchihakurtz posted on 19 Nov 2012, 05:59 1 1

Dude, my first phone was Gio and I had it modded with CM7 RC 3, that requires quite a bit of knowledge :P

Dunno about iOS's interface since I never played with it for more than an hour but I can say it's simple, too simple perhaps, one can get bored after a few weeks playing with it. But the apps and games are quite fun though.

15. someones4 posted on 19 Nov 2012, 06:00 4

Yes, ios is much more difficult to use. Very confusing and unintuitive. On ios, there's a thingy on the screen that let's you switch apps and stuff(much like a menu button on android) which is really hard to use. i can't even figure out the tasks that i perform instinctively on android.

And that guy who said android is a cool place just made us look like morons.

17. uchihakurtz posted on 19 Nov 2012, 06:27 1 6

It is quite confusing for Android users. It took me a while to get used to it. So far I only know: 1. To switch to previous tasks, use 4 fingers and slide up and choose the icons. 2. To minimize use 5 fingers and slide them closer (like grabbing gesture). And I still don't know whether that button is for back or home >.

47. someones4 posted on 19 Nov 2012, 19:19

I stopped playing when that toggle refused to function as i hoped it would.

Someone jealous? I wonder what glamorous state you hail from, possibly Pennsylvania, Jersey or Connecticut, but I bet that you travel to NYC to make your money though. Right?!?

10. shandesilva posted on 19 Nov 2012, 05:30 8 4

another stupid article by Ray S. to highlight his favourite phone, the icrap5. maybe you didnt ask from enough people, before drawing the conclusion or maybe you just asked from your idiot pals at iphone fan club.

12. Aeires (unregistered) posted on 19 Nov 2012, 05:51 5

iOS' big in the US, not so much in the other countries. If you interview enough people in the US, you'd find a group where iOS is the prefered OS. Interview even more people and you'll find groups where Android and even W8 are prefered. Quarterly stats are far more accurate but opinions of users are interesting, especially the funny ones.

13. amiaq posted on 19 Nov 2012, 05:58 3 1

ahh ....the last remains of Apple stronghold

16. Shino posted on 19 Nov 2012, 06:05 3 6

This is no surprise. Usually the more educated people live in the big cities and it is logical to prefer iPhone. They are busy and active and need a system that works flawlessly.

18. gwhyte01 posted on 19 Nov 2012, 06:39 3 1

Oh yea, who top you that. Ppl buy iPhones cause ppl are clueless. Same with android. Ppl here in NYC will buy anything in style or that looks pretty. I've heard ppl say ohhh look at that, it's pretty, what is that a iPhone? While looking directly at the face of my hd7.

38. -box- posted on 19 Nov 2012, 13:06 2

I concur. I've talked with several people who don't even use it as anything but a phone, but got it because it was the perceived thing to have, which is why the cases designed to protect them have the stupid cutout for the apple pogo rendering the protection less functional. Very superficial and mindless, if you ask me. I talked with another who got it because it was an apple and they lived in the "big apple". One of the silliest things I'd heard in a while.

40. gallitoking posted on 19 Nov 2012, 13:47 1 1

I buy Jordan's because is cool to wear them and have no extra effect on my basketball skills.. Google Jordan Sneaker price and see that for the price don't do much either.. but I still buy them...

i would answer Symbian. Because iPhone is not really a smartphone and Android is a spyware.

20. yungmel0 posted on 19 Nov 2012, 07:01 3 1

I believe you can do a lil more out of the box of a android phone than you can an i phone. Yes Apple does have the bigger app store but there is still restrictions that you must jailbreak the phone to in joy. as for the ease of use, i think it depends on the individual themselves. I do agree when many have said that anyone will buy the iphone simply because its the iphone. Its the latest trend that proves to those who care you have some kind of money. Very few people know or care about the full functionality of their phones. If you go down the line of specs yes android has it locked but i also think the smooth interface of the iphone kills that. I've used apple before and it seems like unless your in the "Apple Eco-System" of products, The Iphone actually does the same if not less than most of its competition. If i had to make one choice only it would be android.

I was in New York a few years ago and you have to have balls of steel to drive in that city on Saturday night. Otherwise who cares what New York thinks?

26. twens posted on 19 Nov 2012, 08:14 2 1

New York is not the rest of the world. Come try same thing in my hood and country.Android will trash the hell out of iphones

29. networkdood posted on 19 Nov 2012, 08:50 3

NYC is all about fashion and style - it is about fitting in to society. So, no surprise that New Yorkahs love iphone - good for them, they can keep their i(nferior)phones.

31. chaoticrazor posted on 19 Nov 2012, 09:00 1

this article just proves more on what kind of people are on here then about phones themselves

so an article saying new yorkers prefer the iphone, first its not concrete and doesnt mean its true you cant speak for a whole city, second does it matter or effect you in any way what others prefer to have

all the comments are either slating iphones and promoting android as amazing (as usual on here) or attacking new yorkers themselves as stupid etc

dont you think at this point you should find something else to pin your life on if you get so defensive and annoyed by a flimsy article

34. lolol posted on 19 Nov 2012, 11:16

Dont need any of those 2, Just the person who is asking that question from all those people :D

36. MorePhonesThanNeeded posted on 19 Nov 2012, 12:17 2 1

This comment section is full of win. NYC in one densely populated area, and there are a lot of iPhone users here but there are just as many Android users, only difference is iPhone users tend to be a bit on the dumb side as they only know that this phone is popular and mainly parrot off crap told to them. Although I know so many Android users and they actually know about their phone and it varies, from professionals to regular jocks.

Thing with Android users they actually find out about their phone prior to purchase, iPhone not so much. It's the same with all Apple products since Apple became popular, these idiots think that an iPod and an MP3 player are two different things. NYC home of the craziest things you can think of. Don't judge New Yorkers as all obnoxious and full of themselves, because in every city you can find people just like that, in fact some of them are posting right here in this comment section xD.

This is a bad test, poll or otherwise failure of getting any worthwhile information. Fun to read comments though, can find out who is green with envy because of lack there of though.
