NYT confirms Apple lost Forstall to move forward with an iOS design overhaul

0. phoneArena 01 Nov 2012, 03:43 posted on

It must have irked one of the best designers of our time Jony Ive to no end seeing that when you unlock his industrial metal-and-glass marvel, the iPhone, you get to see iOS the way Scott Forstall envisions it. Faux linen background in the pull-down notification bar, stitched leather notepad...

You don't have to like it. It's their comment; either ignore it and move on or continue the conversation.

And then they will patent it and claim they have been working on these new features way before android had them. its what they do and they what they do they do very well. copy-patent-lawsuit in that order.

Honestly. This may be a good move to keep apple relevant. IOS in the computer world should be collecting Social Security by now. I look forward to a fresh change. Personally im a windows phone fan but I really embrace competition. If apple can bring it then I'll take a look. I'll have to be really impressed to buy as WP and Android are my face right now.

John Ive... one of the best designers around? Are you kidding me. The guy rips off 40 yr old designs from other companies and then makes very minimal design changes year after year.

wow... what a hard frikkin job. He must spend minutes a year thinking up his new designs.

People praise other people for the most idiotic things. When Ive creates something completely different and yet awesome, then he gets credit. When he designs a rectangle with rounded corners .. year.. after year.. after year.. he's stale.

more like minutes per year thinking up "new" designs... "Hmm, how can I copy what's been done before but in a way that makes it new and exciting? Oh, right, apple logo. Well, see you next year!"

I though I was the only one who saw through this crappy/old design, but I guess you been around cell phones for a while too!!

Here's more thumbs ups to you!!!

The reason why Apple is different is not because they do different things, it's because they do the same things differently from others. That's what makes them a standout & justifies their premium billing. Why change if it ain't broke? The current software design aesthetics is what makes Apple wow their legion of fans. If the page turning animation wasn't there, it would have been just another e-book reader without an Apple stamp. Ive has to be very careful and selective about the changes he may want to bring in. He can summarily rubbish skeumorphic design language...it's precisely the life like animations and imagery that make all iproducts so cool. The look and feel of the OS has definetely become dated....not the interface elements. That's where Jony boy should come in.

There's no true justification to their cost. They're just overpriced and trying to eke out whatever maximum profits they can no matter what, even at the cost of human suffering in manufacturing and bored customers who only stay because they've overspent what they have within the ecosystem and are afraid other systems are similar.

well....they dont put a gun or your head and force you to buy their products, do they? If you want to buy a BMW, be ready to pay the price. Don't argue that there are lower cost cars with better (read as more) features out there.

True, nobody is forced to buy iPhones, except maybe business people who are handed it as their business phone.

However, when you buy a BMW, you get tons more car than say, a Malibu. The engineering is on a totally different scale and the options and features are more refined. Take your car analogy to phones and the iPhone doesn't have more features and some are less functional (like multitasking) than other phones. Many of their new features are what other systems have had for a year or more. -box- is right, there's no justification to their cost, especially when you look at things like making $93 profit on 16 gigs of memory (that costs just under $7 for Apple to purchase).

But if a person buys a BMW... they don't end up investing tons of money in BMW only accessories lol. Main reason a lot of people I know don't jump ship to a diff OS is due to the fact that they already dumped a lot of money into the iOS ecosystem.

"But if a person buys a BMW... they don't end up investing tons of money in BMW only accessories"

That depends on the BMW. If you bought a BMW convertible, chances are that you would want a wind blocker. The only way to get a wind blocker is to buy it from a BMW dealer. Same for some of the audio integration accessories. And, and, and. BMW has a whole line of accessories that are sold through the dealers.

What im saying is general.. a person can always go and buy a Lexus or a different brand of car.. and not have to worry about what was put into it. What I was meaning to say is if you were to buy things in your car.. say.. charger.. a deck.. speakers maybe.. a subwoofer lol.. you can always take those out and throw them in a diff car (for the most part) rather than being STUCK just having to take a loss on what you invested. But that road goes both ways thus the loyalty.. Android users get stuck in the google play market.. iphone users get stuck in their itunes/app market

Ah, so i was right again
:p
It will be interesting to see new iOS look, that's for sure.

But i think it's Matias Duarte who will do the most in the OS design field next year..

Honestly, I hope this is not true, I like the idea of a new apple but at the same time skeuomorphism made apple what it is today, no matter what you say, I don't by apple because it represents everything I'm against, but I love all the little details, and skeuomorphism is what gives the impression of being intuitive and "magically" easy. So, in one hand, apple have to change, in the other, this is the end of apple as we know it, somehow I should be happy because they will get rid of the Jobs heritage, but it actually makes me sad... Let's wait and see, maybe this is the stunt apple needs to keep going strong, but I feel that it will never be same...

Man, that was a wonderful post.
I agree, Apple's overall design language is a triumph.
Just that the functionality is far behind that standard.

As an iPhone owner I can say that iOS does need an overhaul BAD.... I think we'll see one with jony Ive in control over it . Apple will have to change things up just to compete with android and windows phone 8. That's why they got rid of scott forstall because he refused to change .My thing is , Is that if they don't want people jail breaking just to gain added functionality and customization why not include two or three different stock themes and include more for the App Store? It's not like they couldn't do it.
