NVIDIA's Tegra 4 rumored to have up to 64 GPU cores with Kepler architecture

0. phoneArena posted on 02 Apr 2012, 12:40

While we are just beginning to see smartphones rollout with the NVIDIA Tegra 3 under the hood, the Tegra 4 is expected to launch before the end of this year; the Tegra 4 is expected to be produced using the 28nm manufacturing process to produce a quad-core ARM A15-based CPU...

64 GPU cores really opened my eyes....

4. PackMan posted on 02 Apr 2012, 13:20 3

These cores are not like Intel or Amd or Arm cores. Current Nvidia desktop cards have about 512+ stream or CUDA cores. Nvidia bringing Kepler to mobile devices is similar to Intel bringing x86 to mobile devices. If you scale up any arm based processor to the size of intel, the current Intel line up will not only crush them in terms of performance but they will also be more power efficient than arm based processors. Howecer the same is not true when you scale X86 downwards. X86 will still be more powerful than ARM on core by core performance but ARM will win in terms of lower power consumption. The same is case when you compare Kepler with powervr or mali chips. However both Intel and Nvidia are reducing the power consumption on their chips. so we will wait and see what happens next...

9. shadowcell posted on 02 Apr 2012, 13:31 1

Power consumption is kind of my buzz kill and avoidance of Tegra 3 phones. I think our battery technology just needs to play catch up.

17. Obviously posted on 02 Apr 2012, 14:12 1

Tegra 3 consumes less power overall dum dum

24. shadowcell posted on 02 Apr 2012, 15:07

So the HTC One X outperforms a Galaxy Nexus in battery life? I did not know that.

29. biophone posted on 02 Apr 2012, 16:19 1

The international verision for sure. More power effecient chip and no lte with similar sized battery. They both are 't good though huge screens with high resolutions and undersized batteries. The razr maxx is the most well rounded phone when you consider thickness/battery life/lte/power/screen

5. rd_nest posted on 02 Apr 2012, 13:20 3

Number of cores won't matter. Depends how much each core can do. Tegra 3 is already 12 Cores. But still weaker than SGX543MP2. Forget about the MP4 in iPad3. Mali-T604 is rated at 68 GFLOPs with T658 can crank upto 350 GFLOPs. Tegra 3 is now at 12 GFLOPs. The point is that you have to prove that the end-product is better than the competition. This is not all. You have to take into account heat, power efficiency, drivers etc., Tegra SoCs are never known for their memory bandwidth. Just search Google about it, and you would know what I am talking about. They may sound good on paper, but let them first prove that they are better than the competition -- they are yet to do that.

12. PackMan posted on 02 Apr 2012, 13:44

but this is not like like tegra 3 and tegra 2.We dont know how will kepler perform in mobile devices. If it is the same as the desktop one then we can speculate only using 64 cores is going to beat any other Mobile Gpu's but still not sure about power consumption. However these New Kepler chips are capable of turbo boosting which Nvidia copied from intel(which they openly admitted to). New kepler based cards are far more power efficient then AMD's current line up at least when not running at 100%. This feature will work great for mobile devices, no need for companion cores, all the main cores can automatically down-clock themselves when needed.

I don't care much about the GPU. If the CPU is as bad as on the Tegra 2 and 3 I'm not gonna get one.

13. biophone posted on 02 Apr 2012, 13:57 3 1

Tegra 2 and 3 was the first fual and quad core chip give it a break. The cpu isn't bad eiter. The tegra 2 cpu beats out the crapdragon s2. And right now the tegra 3 cpu is #1 until the s4 comes out then its a tie bassically soon to be outdone by the exynos and t4 most likely as well as whatever ti comes with and crapdragon is last (once again)

22. Mario1017 posted on 02 Apr 2012, 15:00 2

In speed the snapdragon is a lot faster than the tegra 2, where the s3 fails is in its gpu performance, tht is where t2 is better. And yes tegra 2 performance was pretty bad compared to the s3. The s4 has already; proven to be quite a lot faster than the trgra 3 and its GPU is just a bit worse. And no. Once the new TI and Exynos come the "crap dragon" will jot be last. Qualcomm is releasing a quad core in around September

26. KingKurogiii posted on 02 Apr 2012, 15:18 1

just why are you so far up Qualcomm's ass when Texas Instruments and Samsung has been beating them on a consistent basis for the past 2 generations of chip sets? their rate of progression really hasn't deviated a lot in the past few years. the S4 was rumored to come out in late 2011 and there's still no phones on the market with it and this is April of 2012. they'll have to give themselves 2-3 more months of extra time on the market in something for a power user to be able to justify a purchase than to just wait for Samsung or TI's next gen SoCs.

31. Mario1017 posted on 02 Apr 2012, 19:52

Lol, do you always have to comment on everything I write? Qualcomm shipped the most processors last year. The One S (with the S4) is on the market. Does it matter when it "was supposed to" come out? the galaxy s 2 was announced on February 13. It made it to all the carriers in the US and Canada on October 12. And also ready what you wrote, The S4 was RUMORED to come late last year, Qualcomm never confirmed it. Why am I so far up qualcomms ass you ask? stupid question, you might as well ask, "Why are you so far microsoft's ass when macs are more adored." And are you really impressed with TI's previous offerings?

35. KingKurogiii posted on 02 Apr 2012, 20:55 2

yeah, it's how you should know you post some pretty ridiculous posts. does that really mean so much to you? you know all that means is that Qualcomm is selling them cheaply because well...they're cheap. oh is it now? uh...yeah. that's your problem, you get all bent out of shape about every little thing that i say you miss the whole point. the S4 is too late. the Galaxy S II has plenty of time to reign supreme in every country it's launched in. there's practical reasons to want to have a PC, there's differences between it's functionality and a Mac's. SoCs as different as they may be do the same thing and that's being the brains behind a smartphone/tablet. i bet you wouldn't complain if HTC started to use TI Chips. yeah, they beat the pants off of Qualcomm's offerings.

41. Mario1017 posted on 03 Apr 2012, 12:48

I really couldn't care what HTC uses. As long as it works well in the phone. And tell me, when was the last time you where impressed by TI's past offerings. I wasn't happy about the s3 either.

43. KingKurogiii posted on 03 Apr 2012, 13:27

i dunno, i thought the OMAP5 demonstration was pretty cool but really if you want an LTE device now the most powerful LTE devices are powered by the OMAP4 being that the Exynos and the Tegra III don't support LTE and the S4 isn't out in anything yet.

25. Habib posted on 02 Apr 2012, 15:11 1

My friend lets not forget HUAWIIE's K3V2 quad-core here :D!

28. biophone posted on 02 Apr 2012, 15:54

Well its not out yet so I didn't include it.
To mario king kurogii is right about snapdragon.
And zues I will take that as a compliment.

notice that he said most powerful ARM chip...the S4 does not fit this description. :P

40. Mario1017 posted on 03 Apr 2012, 12:44

Technically but all qualcom processors are built upon ARM's V7

44. Mario1017 posted on 03 Apr 2012, 20:08

the htc one S is out, and it has the S4

37. cvdvds posted on 03 Apr 2012, 06:14

I have a TFP. And I'm not impressed. The only reason it's good at some of the benchmarks is because it's quadcore and that doesn't mean a thing in real world performance. The S4 is dual core and beats the s**t out of the quadcore Tegra 3.
I mean okay it's the first quad core CPU but still it's A9. A9 is just bad compared to A15.

11. Walter.D.DROID posted on 02 Apr 2012, 13:43

About all the cores, I don't really care what they do and what they don't;) i just want all the power to do what i want to do! +.+

14. jove39 posted on 02 Apr 2012, 14:01

64 kepler cores...that is a big number for tiny chip...well...hope its true...and find its way to mobile phones...after its launched on tablets.

15. MorePhonesThanNeeded posted on 02 Apr 2012, 14:06

All this talk of better power consumption, I have yet to notice a single super phone on these processors that have better battery life than the phones we have out now. Better power consumption my ass, only time it's better is when it's powered off.

18. Obviously posted on 02 Apr 2012, 14:13 2

Because you have access to all the new phones with Tegra 3 that haven't come out yet.....

16. Obviously posted on 02 Apr 2012, 14:10 2

Anyone else feel like tablets and phones are going to need fans soon?

19. PackMan posted on 02 Apr 2012, 14:19 1

And Nvidia CEO said that he wants to use intel processors on their SoC and also use the Intel's fabs(actually who wouldn't want that).

That napkin comment at the beginning pretty much says it all. Wow. Looks like it will be another game changer.

45. speckledapple posted on 04 Apr 2012, 00:33

If its true and they put it in the right device then i will go for it. If not, I will be grabbing an OMAP5 instead.
