Orange UK and Barclays launched their NFC mobile payment system in Britain, starting with purchases limited to £15 (US$24); is this the beginning of the mobile payment revolution in Western Europe and the US?...

Yup. There should definately be a cap on NFC purchases (for now). But I don't know how safe NFC on android phones would be to use when there are hackers everywhere. I own an android phone and will buy the Galaxy S2 soon too. But I won't use this technology until im sure that it is 100% safe (password protection options, lost/stolen device issues and more importantly hacking during the actual transactions).

One question about NFC payment.. how much will it cost the vendor???
this is the main reason why cashless payment systems like mondex etc have never caught on - expense, usability, licensing, contracts, sponsorship???
even UK oyster is rather complex to start - (Tell me why if you know..)
- you have to find one of the 'special' shops to activate it, if you are nowhere near a tube station.. and some combined tube/rail stations say they are not 'officially' a tube station!!!!!
- once you have managed that, you have to 'top up' your card... They wil ONLY take cash...
The main use of NFC is to make small payments easier, is it not??? PLEASE tell me it will not just become another kind of debit/credit card, only usable in big stores??
If so, many will just use it for a bit, then go back their normal plastic...

Why go back to normal plastic if you have one device that does it all. Thats the purpose of a multifunction device. Did you use your cell phone's camera for a while, then go back to carrying your digital camera around everywhere you go? This technology has been around for a while, just not seen implemented. I think it starts with payment but could turn into a digital wallet altogether.. ID/payment/etc

kn0bsl0b: and why are you already passing comment on the future??
As for cameraphones, let me know when they are as good as this...
only korea has anything like it... cameraphones may be good for quick shots, but for special occasions, I want decent lenses, good flash, and other helpers a proper one will provide...
and as an old ad said, you have just swam across the tropical island bay, in your skimpy bikini, and order a cooling drink... how do you pay? by credit card of course!!
( not your defunct waterlogged phone, that totally ruins the line of your bikini!! :) )

if that link not working..
and yes there are 'waterproof' phones, but not more than a few inches depth, and still only in korea..
