Motorola kills the Etna DROID BIONIC, with the Targa to replace it?

0. phoneArena 15 Apr 2011, 22:41 posted on

We've recieved word from the depths of Motorola that the highly anticipate DROID BIONIC, which was slated to be their first 4G LTE smartphone for Verizon, has been canceled due to a variety of reasons. First off, we got a nice hands-on look at the DROID BIONIC earlier this year at CES, as the phone would be the first for Verizon to come with a NVidia Tegra2 dual-core 1GHz processor, 4.3" qHD display, and 4G LTE data capabilities.

I was holding out hard for the Bionic because I wanted the mirror mode capability that the Thunderbolt doesn't have. The big issue with waiting for the the Targa is by the time it comes out Verizon's tiered data plan will have hit. A lot of people want to upgrade before hand so they can be grandfathered in. It sucks that they aren't making the Droid X2 LTE.... with the Bionic thought I would be able to have my cake and eat it to

I find it really hard to believe that Motorola wouldn't have taken the Bionic off its website if this were true. I'm sure next week this story will be updated and say rumor is false. It's going to be released in May. Great free marketing for Motorola though.

People, people, people..............The BIONIC is NOT going to be scrapped. There are rumors and about 39 articles saying it will be because once someone makes an article or a post several sites copy and manipulate it to make it sound like it is theirs. I have an inside person at Verizon (yes it is a big wig, not a salesperson at a kiosk) that said it will come out. Yes there are problems/bugs but they are being worked on. The biggest clue for everyone should be the Bionic is on the front page of Motorola's website and still has its own spec page. We just went through this with the Tbolt for the past few months.

if the Bionic has been scrapped by Motorola, why is it still on Motorola's web site? I'm still going to hold out until official word comes from Motorola

Either way, it certainly is generating loads of free publicity for Moto/VZW. Although, if the Bionic doesn't get released, there will be a bunch of lawsuits from accessory vendors over lost revenues.... Which may be another reason for why the Bionic will be delayed, not cancelled.

Moto didn't make any deals with me when I ordered my 600 cases, pretty sure I can't sue them.

This is to MotorolaAndroidIndonesia. You must really be stupid if you can't read. The link you point to clearly says "So that 5/12 date you are seeing above, is just an old one – we’ve still got at least 2 months to go kiddies." Also, read more

The Bionic, or Project Etna as Motorola calls it, is dead. Look for the Targa to takes its place.

I'm not upgrading until I can get some Ice Cream and Tegra 3 love, or whichever configuration is best by then. My Eris will work for now, with Gingerbread too.

Motorola somehow manage to get themselves into trouble, just when everyone thought they had avoided bankruptcy. The locked bootloader IMHO is the main reason people are avoiding Motorola, because you can get the same specs for a cheaper price with unlocked bootloaders from the likes of HTC, SE and Samsung. The long delays in releasing updates don't help either.
It seems as though Motorola keeps locking bootloaders on all models in spite of their actual and former customers. Why should I buy a locked Motorola Defy when for the same amount of money I can get a Samsung Galaxy S with higher specs and unlocked bootloader? No reason at all.
Motorola got drunk on the success of the Droid two years ago and are now drinking the kool aid one more time. If they don't wake the hell up by the end of this year, they may not wake up at all.

Actually what I heard was that the Motorola Targa was supposed to carry Nvidias "Kal El" chipset which is a quadcore processor (just rumored). Now I'm hearing the Bionic is not cancelled & Costco will launch the Bionic in early May. I don't know whats going on but I wish Verizon & Motorola would release an official statement would shed some light on the situation instead of the only info available being rumors. It's getting old.

this is getting annoying....I have been researching other phones to find a replacement and then this news comes down and you dont know if you can believe them anymore. Also if they wait to long there will be zero market for the Bionic if they are releasing it a month or so before the Targa.

News Flash Moto .......everyday you delay you lose yet more customers to your competition. Everyday you delay people will just say "screw it" and go to HTC, Samsung, or LG..... that will look real good on your upcoming quarterly when you have to explain a line item of millions of dollars in R&D on a phone that didn't get sold enough because the customers that wanted to buy it got fed up with your delays.

When they plan these phones they are expected to sell a certain amount of them to offset the costs and then make their profits.... and their market share plans with this phone is dwindling by the day. Wall Street will not be kind to Moto for a mistake like this

Motorola Droid Bionic not canceled, Verizon should launch it in the summer with new features
By Florin on 19 Apr 11

There have been a lot of rumors regarding Verizon’s Motorola Droid Bionic lately, including one that said the smartphone may have been canceled. Well, now we’re almost certain the handset is not cancelled.

The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) has it that the Droid Bionic is just delayed – hence it won’t be available next month, as some may have expected.

According to the publication, Moto pushed back the launch of the Bionic in order to “incorporate new features” into it. There’s no mention on what these features include, but let’s hope Android 2.3 Gingerbread will be among them.

A Motorola spokeswoman was quoted as saying:
“Based on compelling feedback since the show (CTIA 2011), we are incorporating several enhancements to make this an even better consumer experience.”

I love how their little presser was worded though

"the Droid Bionic isn't canceled"

incorporating new features

let me guess.....a 13mp camera on the back.....a 1.3mp camera on the front..... chrome accents?

I wonder if anyone wanted to pin them down and ask "is the Motorola Etna DOA?"

they wait till Q3 and change the Targa to the Bionic and viola.....they delivered

Really disappointed that Motorola is scrubbing the "Bionic" i had the "Blackberry Storm-2, it was a nice for what I needed it for, but now I want to upgrade and thought the Bionic would be my choice. After viewing all the other phones: the Atrix, the Revolution, the Thunderbolt, the Samsung 4g etc: and comparing them all, I felt more attached and drawn to the "Bionic" for my own personal reasons. I fell like if Motorola is going release the "Targa" it's nothing more than an updated/upgraded "Droid-X. I wish they would stop all the hype, stop giving customers the run around and get down to producing producs that we the consumers wouldn't mind spending our hard earned money on! stop the "BS"

Bionic release being delayed/canceled was a big letdown. Even though I didn't want to do it, I went the the Thunderbolt to lock in unlimited 4G data plan. I have to say, my Droid X2 was a better phone and Moto's UI is far less intrusive and much less busier than the HTC UI. Takes more clicks, keystrokes, back button presses to manage life with Bolt UI. Not to mention a batter 20% lower amperage than Droid X for a phone running two radios. The screen is also a disappointment in that it is a phone that is nearly a year newer than the X yet the screen is at best as good and certainly no better. If it were not for wanting to lock in 4G unlimited data before tiered plan starts, the Droid X2 would be a far superior phone. That being said, having bought the Bolt with an upgrade at Best Buy and getting a $350 credit with their buy back plan if I trade it in less than six months (oh yes and having Best Buy match Amazon's $200 upgrade price), I will trade the phone on the Targa before my six months is up and get a $350 credit towards Targa purchase. All in all, a good end result for me.

I am just as disappointed and upset about the delay and problems they are having with the Bionic, but I heard they were still planning to release it and then I read online today that they are not releasing it. Does anyone know? If they are still having technical issues with the device, I think it would be unethical to release it. I'm tired of waiting as well, but I would rather wait for a better phone. Verizon's doing the right thing by waiting. I would be more ferious, if I had to contend with Verizon over a phone that might have continuous issues.

I really enjoy my Droid X. So in the meantime, I'll be very comfortable waiting for this new Targa. Think about it..... you will have settled for a lesser phone, and when the Targa finally does come out, you'll be kicking yourself cuz your spoiled impatient a** couldn't wait for newest best phone out there. My pradiction is Motorola knows if they don't step it up and come out first place on this one, then they may be screwed by the competition again. Desperation can oven result in something really amazing. Take my word for it.... just wait and see :-)
