Motorola is Google's defense against Samsung's Android dominance

0. phoneArena 26 Feb 2013, 04:02 posted on

Samsung is a huge success. The company was responsible for almost 40% of the entire smartphone market for 2012, and a large portion of that number is from Samsung’s Android devices. It’s hard to ignore Samsung, and it looks like Google can’t ignore it either. A new report says that Google is worried about Samsung’s dominance and could be using Motorola as defense against Samsung controlling the ecosystem too much...

If google bought motorola as a backup incase Samsung gets greedy... then google did the wrong thing by shutting down operations in alot of countries specially Asian and African countries... I agree that Motorola didnt sell well there(I'm in India and almost 80% of the Android phones are samsung.. the others are Indian brands like Micromax, Karbonn, Intex etc.. HTC and SONY combined have maybe a 2% market share)..

But google already makes alot of money and if Google has the money to subsidize the Google Nexus Line so heavily that its affordable and cutting edge at the same time.. then it should not be just restricted to the US and brought to other countries as well.. in India GN4 is selling for 30k(Close to $600).. if they get the GN series in developing countries for the amount that they are available in the States... Android will not have to be this heavily dependent on Samsung in the 1st place..

But Credit to Samsung as well.. they really innovate.. like getting the Note series.. Everyone thought that after the first iPhone the stylus would be extinct.. but they got it back and that too with a bang.. having a stylus means having a premium phone now.

Exactly i agree 100% Samsung has earned it's overall standing as the top manufacturer period. That takes hard work and major commitment to your brand and your customers. Samsung has the best software and features solution ever on any android device. Don't hate the success Google should make sure the same blueprint used by Samsung is the blueprint every other android manufacturer uses. It's a sad conclusion that you can own Motorola and have your Nexus line and still have your doors blown off by Samsung and it's Galaxy S and Galaxy Note family of devices. Don't hate innovation Samsung provides that every year without fail and NO Motorola or Nexus device will EVER BE BETTER than any Samsung handset that's for sure.

Agreed, Samsung and Google success depends on the part both played. Google software and data processing is second to none. Samsung manufacturing capacity is hard to beat!!

Together they propel Android to great height overtaking all rivals.

I do hope other Androids manufacturers will do better this year mainly Sony.

I have the Motorola droid x. I dropped it last night on concrete when i got out of my car. It bounced and landed on its screen. No damage. I slammed the back hatch of a jeep onto my phone on accident and it merely got a half in scratch on its screen. I have no battery issues, no freezing issues, no app issues. My buddy has a GS3, Sure it is powerful, sure it looks slick and is slightly skinnier then mine. But he has replaced it twice due to it falling off his couch *with otter box* and screen cracked. And the second time was due to camera dieing and showing a blck screen. Motorola may not be number 1 but they are damn well better at making phones that work in the long run. FYI 3 years with my droid X and waiting till the new Moto X.

This kind of NEWS is really amaze me. Why on earth Google fight with Samsung or vice versa?

This is a totally smoke, smoke screen, lies, damn lies SPREAD OVER by news site like ipinarena. This is the same smoke, smoke screen, lies, damn lies as THE CARRIER WANT A DIFFERENT OS/ECOSYSTEM to fight against APPLE/ANDROID.

To recap: The way I see this is, this is a MICROSOFT strategy to DEVIDE ET IMPERA android. This is the strategist like mark peen (phonearena.com/news/Microsofts-Scroogled-campaign-just-the-beginning-kitchen-sink-on-the-way_id37729) would use. A LOW CLASS STRATEGY CREATED BY LOW CLASS COMPANY LIKE MICROSOFT)

I really hope the next time phonearena create a news like this, would also give a link to what Microsoft try to screw Google such as the mark peen link & other microsoft black magic link

Samsung has to be the biggest hypocrite of the century, even bigger than Apple. Saying they are on the consumer's side and is pushing for choice and diversity, and yet, they seek to literally own the smartphone market.

f**king Samsung. I don't care what you all think, if Google sinks because of the crap Samsung is pulling, goodbye to good 'ol Google Search, Youtube, Google Drive, Google Maps, Gmail and all the incredibly awesome yet free services Google offers.

So for all of the hypocrites here in Phonearena, may you all rot in hell. Besides, competition drives innovation; don't you all clamor and crave the latest and most advanced tech? Thought so.

I prefer myx's (the apple fan) fanboy one sentence comments than your long, boring, ignorant, brainwashed, samsung a$$-kissing comments. samsung fanboys are worse than apple's.

And what do you mean WE? you speak for the world now? I like samsung products but other OEMs are trying their best, take off your blindfold and welcome every product that others are showing, don't brush them off just because there's no sd card, removable battery, yada yada. Samsung ain't perfect, they still have to improve a little, just a little more effort on build quality.

Chill little man, the world doesn't revolve around samsung. you should get out more.

This is a sad conclusion and pretty comical to say the least. Samsung sold 213 million handsets in 2012 those overall handsets made MAJOR revenue for Google and instead of being proud of the GROWTH OF ANDROID as a platform which never would've happened in the first place without Samsung. Google decided to become apprehensive which clearly shows that GOOGLE has become to big for it's britches. If they want to monitor any situation what they should be monitoring is why Motorola SUCKS MONKEY BALLS so badly and why if you place Htc, Motorola, Lg, and Sony all together their total market share would still be 15% behind Samsung. Samsung represents 30.4% or higher of the market share and why is that???? Because Samsung caters to it's customers plain and simple. Google has made stupid unnecessary changes to android that was not and is not conducive to the android as a whole. Case and point forcing your crappy ass chrome browser on manufacturers and trying to force this stupid on screen buttons on manufacturers also. Samsung told Google NO we will use the android stock browser on their handsets and NO we will use our home button and captive buttons on our handsets. Android is open source which clearly means that manufacturers can do what they want with skins and software on top of android which Samsung does. Google better open their eyes and focus on the real problem is it's crappy boring and dull stock android Nexus line devices that's not Samsung's fault that nobody want that crappy Nexus or useless Motorola handsets. Android was founded on these principles removable batteries and sdcard expansion that was the hallmark of android at the beginning and today I applaud Samsung for standing up to defend it's territory even against Google. All Google has done is over stepped it's territory forgetting that the customers who purchase these android devices make this platform what it is today. Forcing people to use cloud storage on devices with 8gb of internal storage is criminal to say the least. MESSAGE TO GOOGLE you better stand down because 40% of all android users who purchase Samsung devices are users who know exactly what they want and they know why they want it. You will destroy your entire platform very quickly if Samsung pulled out from android. Don't fool yourself android is only as good as it's top manufacturer and that's Samsung. 213 million smartphones sold in 2012 means that those customers are return customers people who have purchased Samsung devices over the years such as myself. I have owned4 devices and will be purchasing the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 8 all in 2013. And we won't even discuss the home items i have like my 50 inch flat screen tv and refrigerator all made by Samsung. We won't purchase no crappy Nexus devices nor will we bother with your Motorola X phone device either. Samsung didn't back down from Apple Google better use that as a message because Samsung won't back off them either.

Very well said :) I especially agree with: "android is only as good as it's top manufacturer and that's Samsung." Nail on the head!!

I hope these are all just rumours that aren't true. Surely Google knew that at some point in the future there will be one dominant OEM, just like there was in WM, Symbian, Windows etc... Things are NEVER equal, there is always that one or two OEMs who find a winning formula, and leave the rest fighting for scraps.

I'm pretty sure that as we speak, Samsung is in talks with Google, NOT just to take more money but also to further help develop Android, I doubt their relationship is going to be damaged due to Samsungs dominance, if anything this could help strengthen it if dealt with in the correct manner.

Introducing, the greatest and most ignorant Samsung fanboy that ever lived. I mean, really? Saying Nexus are crappy and boring, and that Motorola "sucks monkey balls" and makes useless products, you are totally deranged.

You say Samsung is the best that there has ever been, but guess who got them where they are? Google, with Android. Without Android, Samsung would be nowhere on the map of smartphone market share. The ONLY reason people bought Samsung smartphones in the first place is because they ran Android.

Google could block Samsung out completely, and would still be fine because another OEM would fill their position; no rational person would switch to another OS just because there would be no more Samsung, that was a really idiotic statement. If I had a GS3 or Note II, and Samsung announced they would no longer make Android products, I would just move to another OEM. I wouldn't switch to iOS, WP, or BB10; you know why? Because the primary reason I would've bought that GS3 or Note II would've been because it has Android, Touchwiz would've just been a bonus.

If Google were to block off Samsung, the majority of customers would keep their current Samsung device (but eventually get rid of it), or just move to another OEM. If Samsung stopped making Android products, guess what would happen to the massive percentage of their smartphone income? It would be completely gone. Samsung wouldn't even go downhill, it would just be a straight drop.

It makes me wonder if this Richard ever owned a pre Galaxy samsung phones ?

I have several , they sucks monkey balls . Just take the Samsung Omnia 1 as an example , they market it as an iPhone killer , it clearly wasn't and far from it . Touchwiz sucks monkey balls , thr touchscreen is monkey balls , oh hell even the sound quality sucks monkey balls compared to its symbian and windows phone rivals.

Samsung wasn't good at making its own software , just look at their feature phones like their Corby 2 . I have one , I got it for free , its now in my drawer collecting dust its just so horrible compared to the Nokia Asha 311

Reading the comments of Samsung fanboy trolls like Richard you will think that galaxy phones and touchwiz are magical . It wasn't . I am now using a galaxy s2 . I got rid of toucheiz with cyanogenmod 3 days after I got it . My dad's GS1 now have trouble download any apps from the play store and the galaxy s1 is running the horrible touchwiz 3.0 instead of the Sense 3.5 in desire HD . Touchwiz doesn'thave the beauty of HTC Sense , yet doesn't have the simplicity and speed of stock android , kinda a no mans land . Oh hell , my aunt and my colleagues all asked me how I done it (cm10) . Most of them are using galaxies . They are just amazed by the simplicity , consistant holo theme and speed .

Consumerism and tech knowledge is good . Fanboys like Richard wasn't . All of my electrical appliances are made by different brand , instead of just picking one brand I pick the product that is best . My airconds are Panasonic , gaming LED TV (for PS3 ) Samsung , microwave Owen is sharp , Plasma TV is Panasonic , Washing machine is Toshiba . You get the idea .

I also owned a lot of phones from different brands , Samsung , LG , HTC , Apple , Sony , Nokia . Owning a smartphone is like owning a car , different brand of cars give you different experience , which fanboys like Richard will never understand

Last but not least , what the f**k about nexus device being boring ? You get new updates and new features (such as new UI ) first directly from Google . For example be the first to upgrade from 2.3 to 4.0 on the nexus S and experience android 4.0 first . That's not boring . Talk about design , the nexus 4 looks and feel classy . While the GS3 has apremium price , under delivers and looks like a bar soap .

Samsung didn't release source code for exynos . Making my TI Omap powered i9100G actually smoother than i9100 on cyanogenmod 10 and my i9100G is the first to receive it . Also the exynos has an security exploit , don't you forget . My friend sold of his GS3 and bought a Xperia T after tired of waiting the nexus 4 . Flashed it with cyanogen 10.1 the day he bought it . Also what he said : "Samsung's 2012 Flagship is a joke

Used moto lg nokia but no sony/se yet. Now I regret getting s2, wished I went with Xperia S that time. The plastic back is really turning me off. And I hate cases for phones.

I can't help but laugh your SO CONFUSED and misguided it's people like you that brings down the entire platform. How easily we all forget when android was NOTHING more than three years ago. If it wasn't for T-mobile android wouldn't even exist nobody wanted to take a chance on android as a platform as far as the carriers were concerned. Now all of a sudden GOOGLE has it's ass on it's shoulder acting like someone owes them something which nobody does. Android is open source and Samsung plays by the rules based on that. Google pays them 10% ans Samsung owns 40% market share and everyone purchases their products that must mean something. If it wasn't for Samsung and all those 213 millions devices sold and brought by various people Google wouldn't be where they are today. People who own Samsung devices own them because they are the best manufactuerer they have the best software and features on any handset as well as good services installed on all Samsung products. Your only fool yourself thinking Samsung counldn't create the same thing Google has done. Bottomline here Samsung is android and rather you decide to purchase Samsung products or not ''WHO CARES'' They are still the number 1 manufacturer period. Google should focus on it's dying Motorola devices and poor battery life Nexus line. Those devices are nothing to write home and tell anyone about that's for sure.

Other OEM'S are trying their best to do what??? create less storage because Google says so, Trying to do what force OEM'S to develope devices with no ability to remove the battery and oh yeah installing crappy chrome browser which is garbage to say the least. Please ny friend if other OEM'S were really trying to do their very best the closet manufactuerer to Samsung would have more than 6% market share and that manufactuerer Hauwei has worst products than Motorola, Htc, Lg, and Sony. Stop posting comments if you have NO CLUE...

When I bought it the Xperia S wasn't out yet .
But I like the GS2 , its ahead of its time , aged well (compared with HTC Sensation or Xperia Arc even iPhone 4S) . It can hold its own against GS3 . My cm10 i9100G launch stock apps just as fast as a stock jelly bean galaxy s3 .
I really liked the xperia S design , but overall not really .
The capacitive buttons are stupid , camera just mediocre , screen is washed out and more dev support on the GS2 .
One of the downside of the GS2 is the display , the screen on my iPod touch 4G looks a lot sharper and better

They say resistive touch screen is bad well it is . But my n97 is so sensitive , heck even my 5800 (a cheaper phone ) have a better touch screen than omnia 1 .
Touchwiz 2.0 is just terrible compared with stock WinMo or HTC TouchFlo .
Instead of touching the screen on the omnia 1 you have to literally give it a good knock !

Bro , Samsung products are decent at best .
Its marketing , all about marketing .

Mainstream consumers are less tech advanced , they don't know s**t . Samsung copied apple marketing technique and it works well , every mall you see a smasung store with display units for you to play with .

Hell , when I say android vs apple there are gonna like wtf is that ? but when i say apple vs Samsung they get all exicted and saying Samsung is cool apple wasn't , why ? Marketing , they market Galaxies as iPhone killers , instead of marketing it as a good product on its own , and it somehow delivers .

A lot of galaxy S owners actually wanted an iPhone

Smasung is literally riding piggyback on apple's succuss . The iPhone and gs1/2 are indeed very similar . They are like I phones with freedom.

Other OEMS like sony are started to become more dev friendly . HTC have amazing design and the polish of sense that Samsung don't . Speakers on the xperia will blow the tiny speakers on the GS3 away (although the note 2 speakers are actually quite good )

I would be happier with a galaxy nexus than the GS2 #regrets . I have fallen for Samsung's marketing where the GNexus never had a commercial in Malaysia and is hard to get . Nexus Devices are just awesome , great value for money and first to receive updates so its not boring like you claim it is
