Motorola X to be part of a whole new process of buying a smartphone?

0. phoneArena posted on 15 Mar 2013, 14:02

Remember that mysterious Motorola device that showed up on video the other day, and we told you it was most likely not the Motorola X? Never mind. Not only are sources saying that it was an earlier version of the eagerly awaited Motorola X, but also they are passing along the word that Motorola logo on the back will be a touch-sensitive button that will have several functions...

that makes Google to be a dell or walmart. Google play is quit ambitious.

Looks just like Samsung NEXUS

40. Supaheight posted on 15 Mar 2013, 15:42

Man I'm waiting for this to come out to choose between the S4 AND this

41. datsyuk posted on 15 Mar 2013, 15:51 1

If it's true where you can basically build your own phone that is literally the greatest thing ever. Been waiting for this forever hoping it is true haha.

42. protozeloz posted on 15 Mar 2013, 15:59 1

That's nice, like I said the best time to buy a phone should be around the end of may, not only the batch of defective units is long gone but you get the device you like the most for your buck

Sony VS Samsung VS HTC VS Motorola should be a good fight where we end up with awesome phones and hopefully good features *fingers crossed*

43. darac posted on 15 Mar 2013, 16:04 1

Uh..
This so feels like the next big thing.
Far bigger than that Galaxy

44. Jonathan41 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 16:14

I would love this. I've been waiting for a long time for manufacturers drop the carriers. this is a terrific idea.

46. Jurdiales posted on 15 Mar 2013, 16:28 1

Order and costumize your own-spec phone? BAREBONES MOTOROLAS? NO THANK YOU...

This is weird, i mean if that feature will be real, on ebay buying an XPhone will be like "Guess the specs" nightmare, thats my personal opinion, I live in Mexico, I cannot use Play Store to buy devices... yet, and I buy all my Motorolas on ebay...

And pleaaaseee Motorola, don't let the microSD slot die!!! :(

Barebones Models could make the custom rom development and optimization more complex or harder?? Just asking because I think it could be complicated to develop for example, CyanogenMod 10.1 Multi-Spec for the XPhone... or I don't know.

51. kozza3 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 16:43

who ever builds a phone with aftermarket software in mind?

52. gwuhua1984 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 16:45

Why would you want to get the device from eBay, while you could get it from the Play Store for the absolutely cheapest for a new device? Really good point with the development side of it tho.

69. Berzerk000 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 21:04

Because he said he lives in Mexico and can't buy devices from the Play Store. I never knew that the Play Store wasn't available in Mexico, though.

96. Jurdiales posted on 16 Mar 2013, 13:14

Google Play is available in Mexico, but there's no Movies, Books, Music Stores, and we don't have the option to buy Nexus devices on the web... yet.

48. gwuhua1984 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 16:34

Now this is the device I'm really looking forward to.

50. jcpwn2004 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 16:37

i have a GS2 on prepaid and the Nexus 4 was a sweet price but not a big enough upgrade. Hoping the X will be an awesome phone at a reasonable price :).

56. Atlas posted on 15 Mar 2013, 17:56

All these rumors sound like it is going to be a brilliant phone!:D

57. downbeat4 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 18:12

I've waiting for this purchasing idea to come to fruition! There always seems to be something either missing or too much of something in each device..."build your own" would be sick!!

59. moronman66 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 19:46

I would love the ability to have a customization system for my phone, what If I want a 4.7 inch 1080p screen with a Tegra 4 in it and 2 or maybe even 3 GB of RAM, the same 13 MP Camera as on the GS4 (If I see enough comparisons to convince me it's worth it), possibly a metal chassis and a 2.1 MP front facing camera, with a micro-SD card slot? Count me in if those are the kind of options they leave us

63. pwnarena posted on 15 Mar 2013, 20:33

why is google so fond of the rainbow and spectrum backgrounds/wallpapers?

64. sarge77 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 20:36

this sounds great pick biggest battery water proof quad or octo core 4g ram 32 storage with sd card slot hey make mine watet resistant , did they say anything about choosing screen size because 5" or 5.5" be good for me.

65. sarge77 posted on 15 Mar 2013, 20:39

OKAY PA, you know it's not April Fools Day, right?
i mean who are you fooling yourself?
Yes, it's possible to have all those very high end specs and all that on the Motorola X that will compete with and probably overtake the S4 too...AND yea it maybe subsidized heavily as well (no surprise here after Nexus 4).....BUT the part where you are saying that people will be able to CUSTOMIZE before ordering and then being sent within week seems like a joke. Obviously, it's going to be priced very low and may sell millions. You think that Motorola will actually pick each phone and add customizations and specs that I want and then send it to me within a week AND they will do this for another million+ users as well?

Are you kidding me? SERIOUSLY? And how can you compare manufacturers like Dell? First of all, their prices are just as every other manufacturers (HP, Lenovo etc). Second, they DON'T sell in millions hence the option of customizing and delivering ON TIME.

Come on. Stop fooling your readers.

74. Sniggly posted on 15 Mar 2013, 23:54 1

Just because it hasn't been done and/or sounds logistically difficult doesn't make it impossible. If anyone has the resources to back up such an effort, it's Google, especially since they've been working on solidifying their supply chain.

83. haroonazeem638 posted on 16 Mar 2013, 01:57

yea right. I got my Nexus 4 after 2 months.

85. Sniggly posted on 16 Mar 2013, 02:07

Yeah, I get that the Nexus 4 has had supply issues, but it's had a huge demand which was unanticipated.

The X is getting a lot of hype, which means that Google will know how to handle the demand.

84. haroonazeem638 posted on 16 Mar 2013, 02:04

and even that's not the point. I am pretty sure such customization will not be offered...specially when a phone is subsidized at such a low price. Smartphones have huge demands...in millions!

86. VZWuser76 posted on 16 Mar 2013, 03:36 1

More than likely it won't be a la carte customization. The likely outcome will be that it will be similar to how you option a car. They have different packages, like convenience (AC, power windows & locks, cruise, etc.) or performance (bigger motor, stick shift, stiffer suspension, etc.). So they could have a performance package also (faster cpu, more RAM, bigger battery), a entertainment package (better graphics chip, more RAM, more storage), rugged package (more liquid and shock proof), or a value package (minimum hardware to support the OS version it ships with).

That scenario differs from a computer where you're able to choose each individual part.

As far as comparing this phone to the Nexus 4, let's not forget that while Google is behind it, it's a different manufacturer in this case. Moto is better able to handle large manufacturing runs, at least on the mobile phone side. Look at the difference between the number of units Moto sells and how many LG sells in terms of smartphones. Moto has had plenty of decent hits, whereas LG so far has had 1, maybe 2. Moto should be better able to handle the demand than LG, especially like others have said, they know this phone has a lot of hype going for it.

100. haroonazeem638 posted on 16 Mar 2013, 22:08

Are you guys really serious? How many different phones does a company come up with?
A high end? a mid end? a low end? These options are ALREADY out there.

What I am trying to say is that even if Motorola X phone comes with packages like car manufacturers do, it would be the exact same thing as having a high end, mid end and a low end phone (just like a basic, sport and fully loaded v6 versions of the same car).

How is that different? They will call the high end Motorola X and maybe a slightly different name for the mid and low end ones obviously.

I know Motorola can handle the manufacturing load but when do they start the manufacturing process? Are they going to manufacture one phone at a time? How do they know how many QUALCOMM processors to order? or Nvidia processors to order? or some other processor? Should they make more 1gb ram or 4gb? or 2gb? Should they make more 13mp or 8mp? or 16mp cameras? What about battery? should they have a 2400mah battery? and a 3300mah? would they fit in the same size case? will they make a different casing for a bigger battery to make you happy?

AND they will do this for every single customer? more than a million times? within a week? REALLY? Even a month wouldn't be enough.

Stop feeding hype. We are expecting too much from Motorola and Google. As much as I love Android and would love to be able to customize the hardware, I can tell you it's not gonna happen unless there are "extra charges" (a lot) for that. We expect too much and then end up getting disappointed.

its better to pay a good prices for phone that would lasta few years without hyping on latest technology. Only bad thing for warranty issues a few years down the road that phone wont be around might have to be stuck with what ever took the X line. If that the case there might be several options already planned out all the way from cheap to top of the line.
I do wonder tegra 4 is a quad core which one of the chip manufactures are hiding their lates octo snap dragon or nividia. do even say. intel their just getting their feet wet with all this tablet and smartphone stuff.

97. Jurdiales posted on 16 Mar 2013, 13:19

I suggest only one change on that phone, they can make the back like the Atrix 4G style, but with real kevlar like the actual RAZRs, it could be better and more stylish, because that back it has looks sooo... common.

But if this phone is just a prototype, maybe it could change, so just my opinion...

98. tswsabeer posted on 16 Mar 2013, 14:12

This is what google is all about, they are brave. I think they are trying to attract customers from all platforms. An iPhone lover can choose a 4 inch quad core, and a galaxy s3 or s4 kind of guy can choose a 5 inch FHD. And they heavily subsidise it so everybody may start loving android.
