Motorola DROID X2 is hot-literally
0. phoneArena posted on 01 Jul 2011, 14:21
Reports have been circulating on the web about an overheating problem with the Motorola DROID X2; the problem could be the result of having the unit plugged in a power source, a battery failure, or just from playing games on the Tegra 2 powered handset...

Ever since I got the 2.3 update on my Evo Shift, it'll reach upwards of 43.3C (110F) just playing Angry Birds. Sometimes my phone isn't doing anything but sitting and it can reach those temps, and sometimes I have to turn off my phone to charge it because it has reach upwards of 48C (118F) while on the charger. I hope that HTC gets that fixed soon though. Used to be (before 2.3 update), the max temp would be maybe 40C (108F) while charging and playing Angry Birds.

It's not a defect, it's a feature! This model is intended for more northern markets that get very cold winters, where keeping your hands warm is a must if you are to effectively operate your mobile device.

My DroidX1 gets hot enough to make grill cheese when the bat gets past 50% adn its been doing it more since the gingerbread update. The tech support person told me all the droids get extremly hot

You are all Ignorant, the temp. is that high because that's how much Gingerbread needs to be fully cooked xD...dont hate if its a very lame joke lol

Respect lame. "Airplane" isn't a classic for it's richly developed characters....

I wonder was this issue with these phones the battery or the processor(s)? I don't know what the processors are supposed to run at temp-wise under load but if it's anything like the temps that dual-core processors hit on actual computers it could get pretty darn hot.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but I just don't see how a software update could change the behavior of the CPU too much. The hardware isn't changing, just the information that gets passed through it. If these problems are happening now, it is just as likely that they were happening before, maybe just not as noticeably. Although, it does make me wonder if the Gingerbread update hits the CPU more incessantly, hence not giving it as much time to cool... not so much a change in the load voltage/amperage, but in the duration of said loads.
I guess it is possible, I just don't know enough to know for sure

My DROIDX1 does the same thing and the Verizon sales rep said that the problem is
Widespread among DROID Xs because of it
Not being able to handle it due to the single core procesessor.
21. hepresearch (unregistered) posted on 01 Jul 2011, 22:08 0 0
The single core would limit speed and functionality, not make even more heat... the CPU can only handle as much data as there are available transistors and processes to handle it. Putting Android Gingerbread on it should just make it buggier and more bogged down (if the Gingerbread update requires more resources...), rather than creating excess heat; the software generally should not increase the throughput for each transistor or process in the CPU, as that is a function of the existing hardware...

the store reps at verizon are a bunch of liars and no answer morons. they peddle quick easy answers to get you out the door. thats all anyone i ever talk to experiences. bad business.

Any time I run GPS while my phone is plugged into my car charger, its almost too hot to touch. And thats just a Motorola DROID. Im guessing a battery issue?

Wonder if it is actually the processor heating up? After all, CPU's in desktops and laptops have been equipped with cooling fans for decades...
That's what we get for sticking a 1 GHz + CPU in every new smartphone that people actually want...

I've burned myself literally on my Droid1, I have a really cheap IR thermometer that has read over 50C with the CPU reporting 60C+ and a battery temp of 45C.

My DX2 has only gotten up to 97 degrees under heavy use. Have had the phone for almost 2 weeks.
15. RORYREVOLUTION posted on 01 Jul 2011, 19:53 0 0
You should always turn off your phone for a few minutes every now and then. Leaving it on all day and night will make it heat up. Just like computers do when they are running all night.

Galaxy s2 gets even hotter yet all of you still want it.

My DX2 will cook your eggs for breakfast, but it won't turn on the coffee. Still kinda nice waking up next to a hot display.

Yeah, it's got to be something to do with Android's power management or lack thereof. My droid incredible consistently gets to a 100+ degrees lying dormant. If i use the text messaging it will get up to 110 in no time, like five to ten minutes and stay that way until i take the battery out or it dies, which when it's running that warm only take five hours from 100% to 0. Google seriously needs to tweak the power management.

Mine gets SO hot that i cant touch it. I have to put it in the refrigerator lol. it has been too hot to the touch. when being charged (using the cord and the charger that comes in the box with the phone) and when browsing the web it gets so hot i have to put it down.
not sure what to do about it. I have had such bad luck with motorola phones (and samsung phones for that matter)
anyone have any advise for this?

what is the app that tells you the temperature of your phone?

Just got my x2 yesterday and I have the same temperature problem

This is just another Motorola screw-up. They can't seem to manufacture phones without serious faults - just take a look at their support forums.

I think we've gone too far when phones need intercoolers. I'm going buy a waterproof case and keep in an icechest right next to my beer.

third one with the same overheat problem .... i called verizon this time and they said it was "impossible" for that to be true. not much i can do at this point.

My Droid X2 gets crazy hot, especially when playing games, surfing web, & surfing Android market. Feels like it's been sitting in the Texas sun.
