What's the reason they just can't release it for say 2.1 and up so all Android devices can run it? This is the exact kind of fragmentation Android naysayers use to make their arguments valid. And to be frank, it shows it to be true. There is no reason apps can't be made with minimum requirements that are still able to take advantage of maximum specs. Its backward compatibility.

It's Netflix that has to make sure DRM works correctly on each of the android phones. The bloody Droid is essentially a 2.1 Android device, but I'm guessing that DRM is easier to get running on a 2.3 device hence Netflix working on those phones specifically. One's that can run 2.3 and upgrade to it. Anything that can't upgrade to 2.2 and run without issues wouldn't be worth their time.

Seriously though, if your phone can't run something it just doesn't show up in the Market, simple enough.

Your point about backward compatibility makes no damn sense, backward compatibility just means that older things will run on a newer system, not newer programs running on an older system...that itself is a serious task to deal with as some pre 2.2 phones might not have the throughput to support streaming of netflix anyway.

It works on my original Droid running the Simply Stunning 5.3 ROM. The resolution is not great over 3G, but I'm sure it'll get better on Wi-Fi.
