Although its circumventing the rules somewhat, for those of you who are in an upgrade cycle and want to bite the bullet here is how you can get on board with this deal. First option is to call whatever carrier you have and ask them if they will price match Amazon's price. If you are a very good and persuasive negotiator you may actually end up getting what you want. But in the event for most of us that we don't here is what to do next.

Again call up your respective carrier and tell them that you are going to switch to a new carrier and ask them what the early termination fee is going to be. For those who are eligible for an upgrade it should be anywhere from roughly 50-100. There really isn't any way of getting around that fee. Now you actually go to another major carrier and have them port in your number, get a new phone, blah blah, etc... All of the major ones usually have a turnaround time of a few hours to 24 hours in which the number physically gets ported. Once your new equipment works, go back to your original carrier via Amazon and sign up for the deal you wanted and re-port your number back into the carrier. Once that is done, return the equipment to the other carrier and cancel your contract. There should be a grace period of 3 days minimum that you can do this fee free.

I asked Verizon why I couldn't pay the ETF and keep my number and resign at a new rate, and they stated that once I pay the ETF I would be "surrendering the rights to my number." Realistically no carrier wants this to happen. So here is your workaround that is legal.

so say my 2 year contract is up, so i have no termination fee. Can i go to one of those cheap prepaid (non verizon) carriers, say virgin mobile (already have a cheap flip phone from them), port my number and then 1 day later sign back up at verizon? Or is there some sort of time period where i can;t go back and get the discount?

If I just finished my 2-yr contract with VZW, would I qualify as a "new member"? Or would this still be considered an upgrade???
