Google has filed for a patent a way to use motion-based gestures to allow you to control a device without touching it; the idea is that the device would be able to understand certain gestures which are turned into commands for the product to obey...

Motion control is a logical next step, so I would have been surprised if Google wasn't doing something in ths area. I am starting to hear a howling sound from the direction of Cupertino....

doesn't microsoft do that with the xbox 360 Kinnect system? it is all gesture based

the above patent is specifically for smartphones.
but if you read the article you would already know that.

OMG I would love the song skip gesture for driving. My phone is mounted while I'm driving and playing my Google Music, but i still have to look at my phone to tap next correctly. A gesture would be so much better.

Ha we obviously have a misinformed Apple lover here. An obviously It's similar to connect but a new way to use motion gestures for smaller devices such as tablets and phones while connect uses a wide area and mostly needs your whole body and is used for none of the things Google would be using it for. An Apple has nothin like this so Apple will copy Google sorry to burst your bubble

Good to hear Google is getting patents for its innovations,theyll be used as a pre defense from apple who themselves otherwise would try to patent it and use it as a weapon for sueing. Apple scours every possible aspect they can to patent for the sole purpose of banning or sueing those with better products than theirs

apple does the same thing. they didnt invent slide to unlock but they have a patent on it.
they didnt invent auto-complete but they wanna sue Android makers for using it.
they didnt invent tablets, smartphones or app stores and they've filed endless lawsuits over the use of these things.

actually they only have really filled a lawsuit against samsung because of a design patent… they havent gone suing asus or acer… i dont believe they have sued even motorola over design
and just for the record, i think apples design patents are fine.. but some like general slide to unlock are a bit much… just like google getting a patent on general gesture control would be too much.. it needs to be more specific and design based

except only that, when you can use voice commands, this isn't necessary.
imagine a scenario similar to that which my might find in science fiction. once the crew of the USS Enterprise was able to use voice commands to talk to Majel and touch the control console, why didn't you see them waving their hands or gesturing with any part of there bodies to direct the ship's computer systems?
redundant.
great that somebody has a legal defense against apple but the patent system is flawed in that it keeps the incumbent corporate superpowers in control. this too will be abused.

Well, it seems Apple has already filed for similar patent prior to Google, and no doubt some of the IP is already present in Kinect.
I doubt this patent will be approved.

Probably using a combination of proximity sensor to detect the initial motion that then turns on the camera(s) to process the motion(s).

good job google, patenting gesture control using the front facing camera.
an israeli company has a gesture control that uses the electrostatic field produced by the hand. hahahahahah google.........
