Microsoft winding down Surface RT orders by half, is the launch of Surface Pro near?

Meanwhile, at a shareholder meeting CEO Steve Ballmer said that the tablet innovation at Microsoft should have been carried out "sooner", but at the times when Bill Gates called tablets "the future of computing" more than 10 years ago, Microsoft didn't imagine itself as a hardware company, resulting in clunky devices, which it is now aiming to remedy with the Surface concept. “I feel pretty good our level of innovations would stack up against anybody,” said the buoyant CEO...

They really thought we were fools?
Of course, every sensible person will be waiting for the Pro version. This will be the King of tablets.
Any Equivalent Android or Apple tablets is better than Windows RT!
RT is just crap.

RT will be great once the apps catch up.
Also with snapdragon pro or A15 processors and 1080p screen, the upcoming generation of RT tablets will be pretty damn good.
It's twice the weight and twice the price.
It's not a competitor to ARM tablets, but rather a laptop hybrid.

To be honest - I also doubt in RT success - the OS lacks the lackluster of iOS/Android. For example, new file chooser in RT does not even allow to resize thumbnails.

I agree, it does lack the lackluster of ios/android. It has a good amount of luster and is natively more capable out of the box, but folks have an app-reliant mindset instead of using what comes with the product and using apps for just what isn't available online.

I am still wating for the microsoft surface pro and if it disappoint me its hardware then sure I will buy Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T - Core i5 1.7 GHz - 128 GB SSD for $1340 including keyboard. I made up my mind. No windows RT for me now until it mature.

MS should be banned from producing PC hardware b-c of MS monopolistic postion in PC market.
Or soon we have only MS hardare to "choose ".
4. wendygarett (unregistered)
You should thanks to Bill gates, because he started it anyway :)

Read more about history of PC industry Wendy.
Bill Gates started nothing, he was genius and lucky businessman, no doubt, but no innovator.
MS was the last man standing in the bloody PC war, so you don't have to be grateful to MS for anything.

I agree that MS shouldn't venture into hardware market. They should just focus on the software. The latest hopes of unifying windows experience among desktop, phone, tablets sounds like a wonderful thing.
I'm just hoping that MS doesn't lose their traction in software because of too diversified focus. A monster Apple is currently dealing with.

I disagree. The software vendor producing hardware as a benchmark is a good way to make sure everything is integrated how they want it. Microsoft already got burned by third-party OEMs making less-acceptable devices (as mentioned in the article) and so now they're making their own benchmarks. It's the same as if apple (actually foxconn, but anyway) making their own soft- and hardware, and having other OEMs make their own products with apple's OSes on it as an alternative to the apple hardware (which we know wouldn't happen any time soon, if ever again)

You see how OEMs are protesting MS making hardware? MS is planning big with retail outlets spanning the whole globe and not some limited pilot project.
MS is competing against other OEMs and MS has clearly unfair advantage.

I think it was because of low demand, in my opinion the RT tablet was to expensive, introducing a new product to fight the iPad shouldn't be at that price. Didn't they learn from the Blackberry Playbook?

There isn't any demand...so they had to lower orders...what are they gonna do with extra inventory?

How many xooms did motorola sell in the first 3 months?? If I recall correctly, the number was around 200,000.
20. -box- (Posts: 3951; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
True, but the xoom was a mess. RT isn't a mess, it's just a bit underdeveloped and lacking a few apps (which it doesn't need as heavily as other OSes anyway)

I love how these idiots criticize the Surface tablet despite not actually owning one
24. NexusKoolaid (Posts: 343; Member since: 24 Oct 2011)
So the only people who can legitimately criticize the Surface are people that own one? That's rather absurd reasoning.
Have you considered that some of these critics actually tried it and genuinely didn't like it, and therefore decided not to purchase it?
The idiot would be the Surface critic that DOES own one.

I read in an above comment that Microsoft should not have their own brand of tablets , PC's, Smart Phones and ECT. Are YOU Nuts? Microsoft is opening stores all over the place. Most big business's who have stores have their Own brand name stuff that they generally sell cheaper than other brands that they sell in their store Folks right now Microsoft is selling their "Surface line of tablets only in their online and their Microsoft Physical stores. Microsoft's OEM partners have over 10 times the locations to sell their products. they are real lucky that the "surface pro" is sold only in Microsoft's store domain because the surface Pro would kill their sales in other locations. I am a little pissed off at some Apple and Android fans. folks there is a need for a Microsoft tablet with a windows 8 OS that can occasionally be used to run Windows 7, Vista , XP, win 2000, and NT desktop/Laptop/Server programs. this device is in a class of it's own known as the "Tablet PC". This new class of tablets wont replace a desktop. or laptop computer but is made to be occasionally do the work that a desktop or lapto computer can do. Microsoft never said the "Surface line of Tablet PC's was made to replace a desktop or laptop computer but that they can help you do serious work on them if you want to do so

Buying a tab that i think is not very good, & overpriced, Is idiocy 2 me.
17. arqjav (Posts: 54; Member since: 29 Dec 2009)
Viewing the specs of the Surface table Microsoft kill it with the really bad cameras they gave it, seriously 1.2Mp camera, low pixel density screen 148 ppi, the rest is ok god processor but I´ll wait for the second generation.
21. -box- (Posts: 3951; Member since: 04 Jan 2012)
Anyone who uses a tablet camera for anything other than video chats looks like a fool. The images turn out blurry from the rear camera because it's so prone to wobble when held in-hand.
22. DiegoMarques (Posts: 4; Member since: 29 Nov 2012)
Microsoft is doing the same mistake that Nokia (with Lumia) when she announced her news phones recently: the sales of the old ones fall deeply. Who will buy devices from the same family but with worst specs when better ones will be launched soon???
25. rusticguy (Posts: 2828; Member since: 11 Aug 2012)
So in short RT was a super flop?
Wish UBUNTU comes on Galaxy tab.

surface RT is one powerful device... it can kill iPad or any other powerful android tablet.. its just that, its too expensive! and the 32GB version is not really 32 but only 16-20, its also not HD screen that people would love to have!and tegra 3 is kinda outdated should be tegra 4(but still this is due next year) or snapdragon s4 pro! and people are not use to the metro UI! and also the apps!
and i wonder why microsoft use tegra chips rather than qualcomm's.. i mean snapdragon is the only one powering the WP, why use tegra? its not bad actually, but apps that is optimize with the adreno GPU of WP, will it work on tegra's GPU? this is why i think microsoft should allow manufacturers to make WP with other chip but only a few, like nvidia tegra, ST ericson novathor, TI OMAP and samsung exynos to cut the production cost!
so im really hoping next year! surface RT2 or RT HD will be true!! make some major improvements!! and i still consider the size of 10.6" huge!!! 10" is perfect! since all tablets size are like that and android use 10.1 coz of on screen navigation...and all netbook are size like that too!
