Microsoft denies the rumored $2.6 billion amount of its 2014 Windows Phone co-marketing budget

0. phoneArena 16 Jan 2014, 02:41 posted on

On Wednesday, we told you about a tweet sent by Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin that claimed Microsoft was budgeting approximately $2.6 billion to give Windows Phone OEMs for co-marketing Windows Phone powered handsets. According to Murtazin's tweet, the money would be divided amongst handset manufacturers with Korean based Samsung receiving $1.2 billion of the total...

"But Shaw also stated that the numbers cited by Murtazin are a "complete fiction" "
Thats right. The numbers are actually waaaay higher.

"strike while the iron's hot"
The only thing thats hot are Windows Phone customers. Hot with anger that is.

"right now Windows Phone does have some momentum from last year that it can build on. "
Then its going nowhere.

When WP7 launched, people around the net said that MS can throw its huge cash balance around to make WP a success. But, right now, it looks like they will go bankrupt if they try to do that.

If only they spent that money on improving the OS.

@alterecho and SleepingOZ
Great if the numbers are "waaaaaaaaay higher" because that means more money for WP ads!

There are are very little, if any, WP customers who are "hot with anger" because user base is growing all across the globe, particularly Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

The numbers of users are increasing so WP is going up and up in market share.

Net Income of Microsoft in the year just ending is way better than in previous years. Sorry to disappoint you but Microsoft is not going bankrupt anytime soon; not this year nor in the next several years.

"user base is growing all across the globe"
Nokia user base is growing.

proof: your own sentence - "particularly Europe, Latin America, and Asia."
Those are regions where Nokia has done traditionally well.

"Sorry to disappoint you"
Window Phone beat you to it.

"Microsoft is not going bankrupt anytime soon"
Either way, i don't care. But i'm staying away from it in the future, if they are continuing on like this. Had to learn it the hard way.

So know Ms is paying Sony and Samsung to promote it"s Wp8 at for, cause it"s not making any profit nor attracting customers. They don't have to pay patent fees to Ms, even though Samsung and HTC were making Wp handsets, it still couldn't sell, due to non liked emerging market and carriers refusing to administer and reps and shops are recommending Ios and Android..

Well to be honest instead of wasting billions on paying other Oems why not use that to invest it on Wp and make the platform more open like Android or ios...

YOu realize all carriers have started to offer Windows Phone, major sites now cater to it especially Lumia phones.

There is enough money to bring back Samsung to it with a highend phone.

Emerging markets is exactly where the growth has been the most furious. This is all available info on this very site.

iOS is not open. Android being too open causes fragmentation issues and performance issues.

Google's own phones are not that open then.

Other Fanboys are just jelly at the sporadic growth and all this media momentum behind WP.

Thats why suddenly all OS want to add the WP flat aesthetics and such design inspired by Lumias.

Since you "used" some quotes from the article, I'll use some of your own quotes, if you don't mind.

"Then its going nowhere."
2013 Windows Phone sales were up 200% from 2012 sales, at the expense of iOS, while Android stayed stagnant.

"But, right now, it looks like they will go bankrupt if they try to do that."
Now M$ will go bankrupt. Who are you kidding? Are you really that butthurt? Pathetic. Dream on, kiddo.

"Windows Phone sales were up 200% from 2012 sales"
Your optimistic observation would have been credible if Nokia's WP devices weren't the only ones selling.

"Who are you kidding? Are you really that butthurt? Pathetic. Dream on, kiddo."
Looks like some people are having trouble perceiving puns and metaphorical statements.

"If nokia's wp devices weren't the only ones selling"
Tell me how many other manufactures there are of the iPhone?

No no trouble, your puns are sad if you call it that. MS makes more money on Droid than HTC pulled in profit. Or really close to it, something like 5-6billion for ms while HTC pulled in how much?

"Tell me how many other manufactures there are of the iPhone?"
One. WP8 - around 5, but only 1 is successful (not too profitable though), which is telling.

"your puns are sad"
Sorry you see it that way.

" MS makes more money on Droid than HTC pulled in profit"
I'm not disputing who is making money (but let me point out that MS is making money off Android, rather than their own Windows Phone).
I'm just bringing attention to how much way back Windows Phone is compared to others.

Yeah all the upcoming updates are for nothing right? R&D and OS improvement along with Cortana is also where a lot of money is being spent.

Are you a Windows Phone customer? If not then simmer down, WP customers are greatly satisfied by their products, heck I have converted 6 of my friends from Android to WP ppl on a bet and won.

Going nowhere? Windows 8 ecosystem with Windows Blue and the 2015 plan for Windows 9 is nowhere right?

Yeah they are going bankrupt by having enough money to pay for co-marketing and purchase of a hardware maker.

Congratulations - Toll Level master! :D

The windows phone is a great OS. All of us that have the phone know the facts. The story of offering money is a news item but it is out of context in relation to how Google and Apple handle marketing, etc. This isn't a news item because Microsoft is doing something the others have not done before them.

Windows phone is a great OS but more needs to be done in bringing more apps. Even DSTV mobile ( Mobile TV Streaming service ) does not support the windows OS in my country.

They have severely closed the app gap. Major apps are already on WP. There is an app to even cross check that for Other OS. And country support for TV streaming is carrier and local resource based. We have Netflix, Youtube, T-Mobile TV service and several 3rd party TV apps here in America already.

I've tried it, speed and fluidity only goes so far. It has both but lacks major customization options like Android. I've said from the beginning that if they would allow users the option to not use tiles, I'd buy a WP8 handset. If WP would have been released 4 years earlier, it might have been up there with Android but now that people have seen how much you can personalize a handset with Android, it's hard switching to the tile approach. Even Apple has woke up to allowing people more liberty in personalizing their phones.

The app argument is overblown. I came in on Android with the G1 during the very early days and the app selection was sad at best the first couple of years. WP is in the same boat but growing in app selection quicker so it's not the problem people make it out to be. It all boils down to haters gonna hate. Same can be said of people who live in the "lag" zone and refuse to believe Android is much improved in that regards. In time all those lame arguments will pass.

I am optimistic that blackberry will one day make a come back. If they had MS $'s to throw around they could. I contend the bb10 phones are better and have more options than android. And with carriers and Google locking down high end android sets the options are gone. I had an s4. It got updated to 4.3 and all my options were taken away. I picked up a q10 cheap and have never looked back. I say come on over to the dark side.
