So is it possible to get it on Windows 7.5 handsets and it just needs a software upgrade or does Windows 7.5 not support it at all?

I'm guessing the current generation of Windows Phones do not have an NFC chip built it, so it won't be activated by a software upgrade. However, the association that oversees the SD card standard is trying to promote the standard of making NFC built into microSD cards, so if you have a microSD slot, you will hopefully be able to add it to your phone eventually.
