This was a terrible mistake by Microsoft... They won't even come remotely close to challenging the iPad, let alone the Android tablet market. Another good product gone to waste by Microsoft. I hope they are more successful with Windows Phone 8 which looks to be the most promising.

Too expensive. For $599 you can get the new iPad with some accessories or a quad-core droid with accessories too. for $999 you can get a red hot alienware!

Bulls**t, and Alienware's are the most overpriced thing ever on the market. You're basically paying a thousands of dollars for an alienface and some cool lighting effects. The same specs can be had in a laptop 1/3 the price.

Well yeah Alienwares are overpriced, but so is a $999 surface tablet that's meant to compete against macbooks and similar spec'd laptops. And if you can find same specs at 1/3 of the price of an alienware then you're just making my point stronger because the surface is around the same price of an alienware and have lower specs. Yeah it has a touch screen, but the pro version is made to attract power users who will use full windows programs that do not/rarely use the touchscreen.

Comparing a gaming laptop to super portable tablet? What are you smoking?

Well it's been said that the $999 surface is meant to compete against netbooks and laptops. Well in the price range it's in it's bound to cross paths with the gaming laptops.

600 + 100 for cover = 700. seems too much for basic wifi only tablet. FAIL when u can get an android tablet or crypad with same or less price tag AND with 3g/4g option

Guys just chill down, these are not final prices, let the microsoft announce the final price then you all can bs about microsoft. But at present bashing the Microsoft just based on speculative price is not okay.............. Personally I think Windows Surface RT and windows surface pro will be priced lesser, Microsoft will not want the surfaces to go the way of dinosaurs at launch, so expect some aggressive pricing from them at the launch................. And plzzzzz don't compare the itoy(ipad) with 'surface pro', becoz all the itoys will need surface pro to manage music and video files on them, becoz iTunes can only be installed on Desktop grade OS, not on mobile OS............ :)

jibraihimi, you are an absolutely correct! I have owned iPad2, iPhone 4s is that it was last no more than four month because both were limited for what I can do. iPhone 4s is just another getto for navigation feature, iconics-bored with three weeks of use, no shared mp3, photo or files- exclusive to iTune. I sold iPad 2 and iPhone 4s to get galaxy note 5.3" LTE and Asus transformer pad TF300 instead. iPad 3 just can not come close to Microsoft Surface Pro. iPad is a toy-is limiting feature and power. Microsoft surface Pro- it is Machine. Transformer pad TF300 serve for general purpose use of email, web, pay your bills, share files, music and many more is highly capability than iPad.

I'll pass at that price. $999 for the Pro puts it in the ultrabook realm. With Windows 8 supposed to support touch screen anyway, it seems like this would really blur the line between an ultrabook and tablet.

I'd rather have a PC that had some tablet like functionality than a tablet with some PC like functionality. At least in an ultrabook, I'm going to get a better made machine by the looks of it.

I think MS had a potential winner, but this pricing will kill it. Even WinRT probably won't be worth it - higher priced than most tablets plus you'll have the expense of MS's apps which probably won't be terribly cheap either.

I'll wait for the 2nd generation at least now while MS learns from its mistakes.

I'm disappointed PhoneArena did not release an article about the ASUS Taichi, if you are stuck between getting a laptop or a tablet with a detachable keyboard, the Taichi is both an ultrabook and a tablet. Instead of a normal lid there is another touchscreen.

If the Surface includes with full Office applications, SharePoint integration, remote clients, includes the keyboard, includes external monitor adapters ... that "might" justify the cost from a business perspective.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this price is perfectly fine. The iPad at 32GB is the same price.

Hell even compare this to the Tranformer Prime which costs the same for it (minus the keyboard).

And lastly if the extra $100 is "too much," maybe you shouldn't be buying a tablet in the first place as this is a luxury item.

I want to know why you get a thumb down for your comment.

I agree with you on the pricing. I actually think the RT is a better deal than IPAD 32GB. It come standard with Office suite and hopefully the cover.

Why are people comparing the Pro to the IPAD? They are not even in the same class.

I won't be surprised if WinRT turn out be slow seller...android tabs and iPad 2 are avialble at $399...or less...but Pro has ultrbook specs...so $999 is fine...with time...price may drop a little :)

Nice! Another DOA product from MS. No one is going to pay these prices...wake up MS, if you want to compete, you have to get your price points down. I KNOW the Ipad will be relevant for years to come (and supported), MS' Surface tablets are unproven and like Playbook the masses are not going to fork that kind of cash over.

Thing is... this is all speculative. No one knows the exact prices until Microsoft gives out pricing info. Considering MS is the one who will be setting the prices, I think they can decide what's what up to the last minute prior to release.

So, if they say competitive and it includes the touch cover and/or type cover, and stand, and Office 2013 on the RT version, all things you have to purchase separately for the ipad, then it will be competitive. They've seen what happens to tablets that are priced higher and offer nothing more than the ipad offers.

No. The $599 is the "lite" version which runs on ARM. The full version (the intel one) is supposedly priced at $999, which is a bit of overpriced don't you think?

wow for a lot of people 1000 dollars for the Microsoft pro which is the best of the lot is expensive but it will sell out because it is what an IPAD is not which is true Tablet that will run windows PC programs. The OEM partners Microsoft has will sell their Windows 8 x86 intel tablet computer cheaper than Microsoft because they ether make their own stuff from scratch or have better component supply partners or convert their mac air like Laptops into table computers.
