im truely truely saddened by these prices. Samsung and Asus seem to be starting off at $699 so let them make the money for you and sell the surface at a loss or breakeven

Uncompetitive pricing? It's a detuned computer system, not a puffed up mobile phone/media player system, and by that measure quite reasonable.

I know it's a detuned PC but it gives almost the same functionality as a puffed up iPod Touch . Desktop program's don't work and there's so little apps on the marketplace doesnt even have adobe flash for that price i don't think anyone would want this RT version people will probably continue buying iPads or Pro version .
It has very good hardware and design though

Oh NO! I don't have 1 million apps to chose from!?!?! FAIL!!!! O!M!G! Thank god! Now I don't have to weed out the 999,900 apps that are completely worthless.

It's not just about me . If I am taking a tab I wil probably take the surface pro . This RT version is just useless . Desktop program's don't work and there isn't a lot of apps it doesn't even have adobe flash I don't think it's gonna be a hit

While I will be disappointed if these prices are accurate, it isn't unexpected. Microsoft will sell every one of them, too, regardless of price, as long as they get the word out and build up pre-holiday hype. I'm hoping the listed prices are for the Pro version, personally. That said, excepting resolution, better than an ipad in every meaningful metric to me

Where do you think M$ got the idea of removing the START Button :)

Yes if M$ starts biting the HW partners in devcies (pc/tab/phone) segment this could happen. Acer CEO wasn't very happy about M$ foraying into HW/devices market and was very vocal about it. Dell ships Linux Laptops which run great. Maybe this could be a begining of a change long due ... anyone who has used WINXP with findhttp://linuxmint.com/ so easy to get accustomed to :)

And then come the south asian countries... late releases + mind boggling prices. When certain products are on the verge of dying in the developed world, "Introducing the ALL NEW" ads start popping up here.

don't understand why everyone is so mean to Microsoft.
if iPad charges $1000 its all fine, but you would like surface for free.
on top of that why you going on and on about stupid apps? if I understand will I can run any software on thus from PC right? so why would I need any stupid apps? why to download stupid game for .99 when you probably going to be able to play world of warcraft on this!
stick to your iPad, but I am going for this.

Peter this is the rt version. So no backwards compatibility with windows programs. The pro version is the one you are thinking about. So apps are important. They should have undercut apple. If this was under 400 I was so getting one. Now I'm not, but that foesnt mean I'm getting an iPad. Prolly a nexus 7.

thanks for making it clear to me. is the pro version going to have same hardware (tablets), or are they all going to be laptop like products? how am I going to know which one is rt and which one pro? is it not going to be confusing?

Nah, its going to clearly say pro and cost more. I do believe its going to have the same exact form factor with a higher resolution screen, Intel chip, and SSD.

well apps gonna come now like hell because last time wp7 was alone with lack of developer platform for cool features but w8 +wp8 will support crossplatform +porting from IOS and Android is why eaiser on this one wht else a developer wants it cant get any better for them

marc is right. WP/RT for MS is just like what iOS is for Apple, and same goes for Windows vs Mac OS

ipad win over Microsoft at $499 but if I have a 3rd option to choose then I will definitely go with galaxy note 10.1.

Not for someone who doesn't like the iPad. I don't, and I'm a little burned out on Android. So, this is perfect and I find the price resonable. Especially if it's good quality materials. Gonna have to play with one of course but thank god their are more options available now. Choice is king!

It's actually $100 less the the (new) iPad.
32 Gb Windows Surface RT priced at $499 while
32 Gb new Ipad priced $599

For $599, you'll get 32 Gb Surface RT With Touch Cover Keyboard

I'm not sure why Microsoft went with 32 Gb for their lowest offering.
If there a 16 Gb variant priced at $399, I'm sure it'll sell really well.

If you look on the microsoft website and at the Surface, all it says is coming soon. So I bet that the prices are incorrect or they're just guessing, whatever website it was "officially" on...

I will constantly say this to the end. If you are going to compete with the Ipad, you better be better and cheaper...The Microsoft tables could in a way be better, but look at the price. This thing will never sell. They will learn the hard way just like HP, HTC & so many others. Samsung will be next if they keep producing $499 tablets which are basically the same as the first and although Apple does this--they actually can because they have a base. I was standing beside a woman in Best Buy this weekend, and she didn't even know the difference between, 16, 32 and 64 gibabyes nor LTE version vs wi fi only and why the price difference. All she knew is that it was Apple and she wanted it. This is why it will be hard for manufacturer's to succeed in this tablet arena with these riduculous prices off the start!!! One thing like this though unlike other manufacturer's, Microsoft has money to experiment with projects like this.
