Microsoft is allegedly prepping to give the Surface RT tablet to schools and universities for $199. That is for the 32 GB version of the ARM-based Windows RT slate, and is surely aimed at popularizing the platform as much as possible against the tough competition of iPads and Android slates...

This should be the normal price of Surface RT everywhere, not only for students...........

totally agreed on that one. if i wanna buy one in my country it costs freaking 1100$ .it's just plain ridiculous! that's like 3 times the price of an ipad mini and twice of an ipad, which makes it look even more ridiculous. i know it's mostly about taxes and fares and whatnot, but still i would immediately buy like 2 RT-s if it was only 200$. i'd be better off even ordering it from the US than to buy it here...

it sounds like its just for the schools, not for the students

They said provide for students
but only institution and schools can buy it (which is kinda weird)
So maybe somehow you'll get it at your school store I hope

So the Universities/Schools have to order them? Well I guess that guarantees that they'll get a large amount of orders. Crossing my fingers that my Uni will yield

I have been looking for Microsoft to use it's acquisition of the banes and Noble educational books division to have MS tablets for the educational institutions. Windows Rt educational e-book-Reader tablets is not a bad Idea folks because you do not need a full windows 8 OS for E_book readers. .Android in some form has been used on Amazon's Kindle fire and the Barnes and Noble Nook for some time now. Android is not a full desktop OS nor is IOS on the Apple Ipads a full Desktop OS. Windows "RT" is a good OS for E-book readers because you get to read your favorite Novels or Educational text books plus have Microsoft office Home and student with outlook Plus touch screen Apps from the windows RT Apps stores to watch internet TV, Netflex movies, Games and ect
