Microsoft Surface Pro 2 vs Apple iPad 4 vs Google Nexus 10: Silicon Valley MMA

0. phoneArena 24 Sep 2013, 05:23 posted on

We are pitting the current "vertical integration" tablets of the Silicon Valley's big three household names - Microsoft, Apple and Google - to gauge the different paths they are taking into creating their own hardware to go with their renowned software. Of course, both Google and Microsoft are new at this game, introducing their own tablets just last year, whereas Apple has been a vertically integrated maker for decades now. Still, the Windows and Android brains did very well, and now with the introduction of Surface Pro 2 Microsoft has a chance to be commercially successful as well. Let's see who did what here...

I don't agree it's the best. They just play in different categories.
Ipad 4 and Nexus 10 are tablets, the Pro 2 is a laptop replacement.
How can you compare a tablet that costs DOUBLE and WEIGHTS 300 grams more?
The one they should be comparing to is the Surface 2, both for price and use!

why did they compare the surface 2 pro instead of the surface 2? Its obvious the pro smashes the others in performance and quality.

The surface tablets are amazing. Get rid of the fan, make it lighter, thinner and less costly. Then I'm all in.

Until Intel gets some more power reduction they can't use thegood i5s without the fan, wait a few years they are working on getting laptop chips into tablets that can be passively cooled.

Even the low res surface RT display beat retina iPAD display in many cases.

I am sure the new 1080p display will do even better.

I work in Tech and people are always bashing RT. I actually want and RT device. I'd prefer 8-9" so I'll probably wait until the end of the year to see what all comes out before picking one. I have a very capable Laptop and PC. RT is perfect for me as a browsing/app device.

A fair review would've been done with the Surface 2.... Typical PA BS.... What is the Surface 2 priced at like $499❔.... What an idiot..

So why compare the x86 Core i5 powered Surface Pro 2 with ARM powered tablets?
This is like me saying the Apple and Android tablets are useless because they don't run steam, counterstrike, Heroes of newerth, World of tanks, Diablo 1-2-3, Path of exile, Mirrors Edge, Homeworld 2, League of Legends, WoW etc, while my Surface Pro does.

i must admit this article is a bit pointless when comparing two very different types of products that are leagues away from each other in terms of production and capabilities. Tablets are for one purpose, consumption. The Pro 2 is some far far beyond simply consumption and that is why they do not compare.

I agree with you, buy I'm sick of people defining what tablets are for.. A tablet is for whatever the consumer needs it for.. Before there were only iPads, and Android tablets. Now, things have changed and with the Surface the expectations of a tablet is much more than just consumption.. Tablets are still relatively new to the market, so to definitely label what they are exclusively for at this point is strictly closed minded, and naive.... If you are a early adopter of a tablet like device then don't expect for future tablet like devices to follow the limitations of what you are used to...

ok, so perhaps the author felt they came closer to comparable because the Surface Pro 2's battery life is so significantly improved, reducing the gap slightly? (exception of performance and weight of course)

as far as noise goes, the surface pro doesn't start revving fans unless you actually start hammering the processor, like with a game of World of Tanks, I expect the haswell variant to be slightly quieter in this regard, outside games or compiling stuff I've found the fans are usually off.

Should have been this way as far apples and oranges go (pun well intended):-

"The base model Air 11” that we’re looking at today has the i5-4250U, a 1.3GHz part with max turbos of 2.6/2.3GHz (1C/2C) and Intel’s HD 5000 onboard graphics with a max GPU clock of 1GHz."

Against the Surface Pro 2, at RRPs MS should have went straight for the jugular by using the same SKU alas they opted for the weaker Haswell SKU = i5 4200U/HD 4400. At $100 less than the MBA starting price at USD999, key specs left are better portability, FHD + touch + Wacom enabled screen. But the MBA wins at 64Gb extra storage and the sure as hell better performing Haswell i5 4250U/HD 5000 firepower. Shouldn't have been tablet for tablet but for best mobile PC period in that sense of targeting.

I won't even waste my time for the Surface 2 because imho going for Tegra 4 has been a shot in the foot on MS' part. Intel Bay Trail Atom Z3770 to me are a better fit and I don't care how MS slice or dice it, they should make RT work for that by hook or crook. Because RT + ARM based SoCs = no dice, sorry RT fans but maybe better for enterprise deployment at the lower rungs than Pro 2's. Consumer against the likes of iOS or Android? Afaics Tegra 4 isn't that much of a Snapdragon 800 killer and as much as I'm an Apple critic it sure as hell have no prayer against the might of Apple's A7 that may or may not actually be a more powerful A7X in the upcoming iPad 5.

The good news here is; MS now knows what they need to do for the 3rd installment of the Surface saga...that is...if they know what's good for them.

not sure what you're trying to say, RT doesn't run on x86 ATOM processor's it's for ARM processors, and the best thing about RT's existence is it makes sure Intel keeps pushing to catchup in the processor power efficiency race against arm processors.

That's precisely the problem. RT + WP = something that MS need to address and fast. I'll clarify; cryptically that's what I meant by making RT work for Bay Trail, it just can't. Tablet OS and phone OS. It's a predicament. 2 separate tablet plays to be exact, which isn't wrong unless played haphazardly.

It's more of a branding nightmare.

A Tegra 4 tablet w/ a relevant OS (for sake of argument let's use Android) against a sea of similarly specced and priced rivals are already a number in the statistic. Even far worse when RT's app ecosys are downright inferior to both Android and iOS. So what exactly are RT + ARM strategy for? A temporarily light ver of Windows for lower power ARM SoCs that can run Office? A stopgap measure? Why?

When or if Intel or AMD for that matter hits the ARM power : batt life parity soon enough, then what is the use case for RT when Win8.1, 9 or 10 can/should run just as easily by then?

Fyi I don't think Intel really considers RT as one of their primary motivator for their mobile SoC push, if at all going by their Android-IA efforts (https://01.org/android-ia/).

no app store has hundreds of thousands of applications on it from the get go, RT's benefit is that Windows store apps for both x86 and ARM can be compiled at once and use the same store(both touch and desktop), as far as Windows phone goes, Microsoft is intending to merge the Windows store and Windows phone store API's together, like with the app numbers that's just not something that can just be done instantly.

Regardless of any bias that people claim, the intro to the article is way off. Apple has been in vertical markets for decades while Microsoft just got into it???? What are you smoking? Microsoft nearly invented the handheld and tablet markets over a decade ago. A success? Maybe not, bit they pioneered both tablets and PDAs while apple was still begging Jobs to come back and save it from extinction.

You got to be joking when you mark a Haswell Core i5 as an 'average processor' in your charts and the puny ARM little cores of the A6X and Exynos 5 of the iPad 4 and the Nexus 10, respectively, as 'fast processor'. You would need dozens of those ARM cores to match Core i5-4200U's performance.

well folks at least you get a nice side by side chart showing the specs of these devices. Like I saod before there are now 2 types of tablets on the market which are the general touch screen apps only tablets like the Ipads, Android tablet, and the windows Rt amd Nsw Surface 2 tablets and
there are the other type the PC Tablets like the surface Pro 1 and 2 and the MS OEM Windows 8 or coming Windows 8.1 MS OEM tablets. One type is for consumption and the other type is for business production what a person buys is dependeant upon what you want to do with your tablet and how mich cash you can afford to pay for it. I think the Surface Pro tablets are great working tablets but they are too expensive for a lot of people to BUY! I truly
think Microsoft has to make a cheaper Plastic case Windows 8.1 tablet and sell it for 350 to
400 dollars.or elase Microsoft wont sell many Tablets causinf Android and Apple Ipads to still dominate the tablet market. Yoo Microsoft Make a cheaper Windows 8.1 Tablet PLEASE! if you want to stay in the tablet business
