Microsoft Surface 5 specs rumors point to increased storage and Intel Kaby Lake processors

When maxed out, the Surface Pro 4 is a productivity force to be reckoned with, as it features an Intel chip, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of fast storage. However, the tablet, released in October last year, is positively due for a refresh. According to the most recent data, Microsoft is preparing various hardware and software upgrades for its fifth-generation tablet. First of all, the SSD storage of the top-line model could be increased to a massive 512GB.

Performance-wise, the tablet should benefit from Intel's Kaby Lake processor line-up, offering number crunching and battery life improvements. Microsoft might also upgrade connectivity with USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports, letting the tablet talk with the most recent of peripherals. Speaking of peripherals, the Surface Pen stylus will be awarded wireless charging capabilities with an included magnetic charging dock. There are speculations that the display resolution might be increased to 4K, as Intel's Kaby Lake architecture offers native 4K video support. But this doesn't mean that Microsoft will ride the ultra high-resolution train just yet, as all that pixel pushing will inevitably strain the hardware.

Still, MS could upgrade the screen with a built-in fingerprint scanner, as it has patented the required technology years ago. Scheduled for a possible release come Spring next year, the Surface Pro 5 is expected to run Windows 10 Redstone 3 right out of the box. The upcoming operating system will be focused on unifying the platform across all Windows devices, including the HoloLens virtual realty device. However, previous reports have suggested that Redstone 3 will be released Fall 2017, so we'd rather take this particular rumor with a grain of salt.
