In a world where the smallest and most unnecessary bit of "news" can fly around the social web and gain traction in a matter of hours, MetroPCS has done something amazing: it flew under the radar...

It's a big and rough market out there. Metro is going to have to link up with one of the other regional little guys or find themselves on the wrong end of the LTE wars. LTE is not cheap for a carrier to offer, always with emerging tech and it's only going to get harder. Hope Metro makes out well, now Sprint you guys need to get it in gear wasted efforts on WiMax with damn near no good results now you have to play catch up and get LTE to which even a tiny carrier like Metro has beaten them to. Shame!

Sprint is rolling out lte in a few months. When it does happen I would personally much rather have a phone with lte and wimax than the cdma/lte verizon has or the hsdpa+/lte at&t has. More power to sprint if they keep unlimited data. I'm on magenta now, but a lte/wimax phone would make me switch to sprint.

wimax is being phased out as it is being replaced by LTE, so that combo will likely never exist. Not to mention the power usage would be off the charts. Also Sprint's wimax has proven itself consistently slower than hspa+ in some areas so there is really not benefit at all.

WiMax is being shut down in favor of LTE, so WiMax will have gone the way of the dodo in just a few years. Therefore, all the current Sprint WiMax phones are going to be stuck on their slow CDMA network, though Sprint's planning on getting rid of that soon too and setting up an all-new 3G network. In other words, sprint is the metaphorical chicken with its head cut off.

Personally I like the way AT&T has it: proven EDGE/GSM & UMTS 3G with HSPA+ for where they don't yet have LTE, and LTE for even faster and more consistent speeds. Though I'm very interested to see what T-Mobile will be doing, as the theoretical threshold of UMTS (HSPA+) passed the 100Mbps mark months ago, and the 42+ Mbps is gaining wider and faster deployment than the separate LTE networks

***EDIT***
Sorry didn't see your comment wrxinsane

Actually, Existing WiMax towers will still be supported until all existing Wimax devices reach their EOL. Sprint is releasing a trimode connection device capable of 3g, WiMax and LTE and has no current plans of shutting down existing WiMax towers. They definitely won't be adding any additional WiMax towers though.

yeah i saw the device on the new landings page. 3G/WiMax/LTE on a single device. i dont expect more towers but i live about 2 Km from a clearwire WiMax tower that sprint uses. sprint has the best speeds in my market and LTE is planned for the city i commute to. so wimax/LTE is perfect for me. i plan on buying the device if initial reviews are good.

Well, Metro pcs beat EVERY carrier to LTE, not just Sprint. But Sprint beat everyone to 4G, so when the other carriers are adding LTE slowing, 4 years later, they are actually the ones playing catch up. We'll see if LTE is still so great in 4 or 5 years. It might be, or everyone may have moved onto the newest thing.

It's funny how many people diss Verizon, but year after year they add more retail customers and have the lowest turnover of customers than AT&T, Tmo, and Sprint. MetroPCS LTE hasn't grown since they launched it. AT&T HSPA is faster than EVDO, but Verizon LTE covers 2/3 of the US POP. AT&T HSPA might be a little more than 2/3, but their LTE is only 20 cities. When the next iPhone comes out later this year with LTE, HSPA will not matter for backwards compatibility because Verizon LTE will cover even more POP. By the time AT&T and/or Sprint catches up to Verizon, they will probably upgrade to LTE Advance. Being analyst, I would choose Verizon based on their healthy balance sheet and investment in their network. They don't cut corners like AT&T and Sprint. Customers who spend their money with Verizon, will get more in return with value, reliability, and service. I've had them all and there is no price on reliability.

HSPA+ is faster than 3G. Everything is faster than EVDO, I haven't used that in years. I've gotten speeds over 30MB's on my Skyrocket with HSPA+ pretty consistently. I live just outside NYC so the lte isn't far from my doorstep. Once LTE is available, and with HSPA+ speeds like I alredy recieve, I believe AT&T has the best network. And yes, they do only offer it in select areas, but those are areas with a very high population. So they are hitting the majority of people with it. For me, Verizon and AT&T offer the same coverage and I like AT&T's phones better. Verizon only recently got good phones with the Nexus and RAZR. Asie of those, their phones are usually just ok., where AT&T gets alot of exclusives and good high-end offerings. You just can't live in a little hick town with a population of 100 and have AT&T. For that you need Verizon.

MetroPCS has the worst customer service i have ever had to deal with. I had to speak to so many reps just to get my damn 50 dollars back. Borderline cons.
