Roadmap confirms true octa-core chip coming from MediaTek
Earlier on Tuesday, we told you about the MediaTek MT6592 octo-core chip. We can now update that story by telling you that the word out of Taiwan is that the company has already started showing off the chip to customers just last week. Mass production is expected to start taking place in November, using TSMC's 28nm process. The first handsets to include this processor, called the MT6592, will rollout in the beginning of 2014. Another report, this one from HQ Research analyst Pan Jiutang, shows a leaked picture of MediaTek's road map which sure enough, shows the octo-core MT6592 with a clock speed range of 1.7GHz to 2GHz and video decoding of 1080p at 30fps.

As we told you earlier, the MT6592 scored close to 30,000 on the AnTuTu benchmark test, and while that is a pretty good score, it is not as high as the tally produced by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. On the other hand, you can be pretty sure that the MediaTek chip will offer the better value. And instead of the big.LITTLE technology employed by the Samsung Exynos octa-core chips in which only four cores work at any one time, all eight cores will work together at the same time on the MT6592.

Other reports in the region show that MediaTek has 100 job openings it is looking to fill. Based on the positions being advertised, it looks like MediaTek plans on concentrating in chips for 4G LTE technology along with the development of GPU chips and products for Android. Looks like we might start seeing a lot more MediaTek silicon in smartphones in the near future.
