Living with the Samsung Galaxy S5, week 2: exploring the depths of TouchWiz
0. phoneArena 04 Jun 2014, 10:39 posted on
Last week marked the beginning of a journey for the duration of which the Samsung Galaxy S5 had a front row seat. Actually, scratch that -- a more proper way to put this would be to say that exposing the S5's every nook and cranny is the end goal -- the journey itself is nothing more than a facilitator. Like we have in the past, we felt like Samsung's latest flagship is a many-layered device -- layers that a uniform review process doesn't necessarily uncover...

About the heart rate monitor "Despite its near utter uselessness"
Maybe for you it's useless. I use mine at least 5 times a day, specifically when I am working out and trying to keep a steady breathing pattern and heart rate.
To each their own though.
6. chocowii (Posts: 441; Member since: 30 Jan 2014)
You use it 5x a day to keep a steady heart rate?
Who are you?
34. ZayZay (Posts: 571; Member since: 26 Feb 2011)
Yeah. I'm not a big comic book person so that went over my head.
38. sgodsell (Posts: 3498; Member since: 16 Mar 2013)
I have a friend that does physiotherapy for sports and other injuries. She uses her S5 on some of her customers, and she even keeps track of their heart rates. Its not for everyone of course.
BTW I have no problems with the finger print scanner. It might not work the first time, but that happens 1 in 15 times for me.

Having it in a mobile device is better than buying a separate device for the same purpose.
67. zunaidahmed (Posts: 750; Member since: 24 Dec 2011)
Yeah right.....Why don't we put microwave in our phone so we don't need to heat our food with something else. Not everything is meant to be put together. Try downloading a heart rate app, you would see pretty much the same results. So this extra hardware it total gimmick. But I do love all the other features in S5.
71. kabhijeet.16 (Posts: 803; Member since: 05 Dec 2012)
Ya right. Who needs a camera in mobile when we have separate devices for that purpose.... ! ! ! Get it?
9. maherk (Posts: 3550; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
Same here, once you start using it you become addicted to monitoring your heart rate, especially before, during, and after your workouts. Now I don't use the one on the S5 anymore since I had it on my wrist in the Gear Fit.
As for the review, while I loved the one posted last week, and I thought it did hit someone of the weaknesses of the S5 (mainly the fingerprint scanner), I did find this one full of hatred toward touchwiz, amoled, and almost everything that has to do with the phone. What bugs me the most is the constant attack on the color accuracy found on the S5, just because Jobs bragged about the color accuracy on his iPhone, tech sites wanna treat that as a model that all phones should follow, gladly they aren't. LG and Sony for once realized that and went with more saturated screens lately, LG starting with the G2 and Sony with the Z2, people love vivid colors, go check what mode people use on their TV's, most of us go with the dynamic/vivid modes, look at them when they want photo sessions taken by professional photographers, again they always ask for those vivid colors. Nokia use almost the same type of screen, but no one seems to complain about it, maybe because they don't have the Samsung brand on the front.
Again I don't see the S5 as a perfect phone (the fingerprint scanner, overrated selective mode, speakers quality and mostly it's position are a huge let down for me), but still I end finding this article is biased against the S5, which wasn't the case last week.

I'm guessing you never placed 2 fingers on the side of your neck...c'mon now that is just sheppness to say you use it 5 times a day and became addicted
25. maherk (Posts: 3550; Member since: 10 Feb 2012)
I am not checking if I am dead or not, I am keeping count of my heart beats average while working out.
42. kabhijeet.16 (Posts: 803; Member since: 05 Dec 2012)
LOL.. by your logic clearly no-one needs a heart rate monitor in hospitals, or stethoscope or Blood pressure monitoring gauge, coz we all have 2 fingers...
68. zunaidahmed (Posts: 750; Member since: 24 Dec 2011)
S5's heart rate monitor is nowhere near as accurate as the stuff you mentioned in hospitals. But putting two fingers on the side of ur neck is almost as accurate as the S5.....
16. piskoltip (Posts: 6; Member since: 01 Jun 2014)
You put 3 fingers on your wrist artery (arteria radialis) or your neck (a. carotis) count the beats for 10 sec, multiply by 6 and there you are. No need for any fancy stuff :)
If you still need fancy, than you can get a heart rate monitor for jogging, and you get information all the time on the wrist watch, which also gives you accurate information.
Maybe went a little off-topic.
40. josh_dent910 (Posts: 6; Member since: 11 Oct 2013)
Or you could just use your Galaxy S5 and not have to waste time counting...
43. kabhijeet.16 (Posts: 803; Member since: 05 Dec 2012)
Isnt it more appropriate to Have it in a mobile device you carry all the time rather than buying a separate device for the same purpose.?
23. Pem3108 (Posts: 15; Member since: 23 Jan 2014)
I think what he is referring to is the fact that there are apps out there that use your cameras LED flash to measure your heart rate. So basically Samsung has not invented anything new, they just like to make a big deal out of it because they couldn't come up with any real new features. My Nexus 5 can measure my hear rate without having the individual heat rate monitor.
28. buccob (Posts: 2545; Member since: 19 Jun 2012)
Well I kind of agree with Chris P. here in that it is just a novelty, because there similar apps with results just as precise...
I mean, it is useful for some people... but it is not a require piece of hardware...

I happen to know a thing or two about exercise, and I still fail to understand how the heart rate monitor figures into your regime. If you want to keep a steady breathing pattern, you need real-time readings, not random ones that require you to stop your work out, flip out the S5, go to S Health, and perform a reading. If anything, that actually goes against the very idea of a steady heart rate -- you're stopping, after all.
Besides, that's why I put the 'near' there -- to obviously account for the few peeps that have found a rare use-case scenario, like you claim you have. In your own opinion, what portion of the entire S5 population even uses it, let alone with actual, real benefit? Certainly low enough for it to be tagged mostly useless.
53. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
I use it DAILY and it's a fun thing to have, no one else has it and I have fun monitoring my heart beats after working out. And yes you can pop your S5 out, get into SHealth and measure it in 10 seconds, where's the problem? I get 117 bpm I don't get the usual 65 bpm. I know it's not a wow feature but it can help older people (40+) and it's a fun gadget. and yeah I use it with my girlfriend to see who's heart is beating more. lmao I know it might seem silly, but to many people the heart rate monitor means something. about the S5 menu and the S5 in general, it took me less than 2 hours to know every single thing about it and try everything, in fact I can't understand how a tech guy got lost in the menu as it's very easy and clear to use for a normal person like me, and the fingerprint? it's amazing and accurate.
56. Chris.P (Posts: 557; Member since: 27 Jun 2013)
And precisely how is that a significantly better alternative to an app? In our comparisons thus far, the Instant Heart Rate app delivers very, very comparable results. Oh, and it works on pretty much every smartphone in existence, and doesn't cost a dime, for you or Samsung.
63. 3rdDegree (Posts: 213; Member since: 13 Jul 2013)
He meant its near utter uselessness to him.
2. strikercho (banned) (Posts: 156; Member since: 20 Mar 2012)
Not surprised. Again:) The expectations could not be high from such a brand.
54. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
lmao. the BEST brand in the WORLD? please tell me how nothing can be expected from the brand you love.
3. chocowii (Posts: 441; Member since: 30 Jan 2014)
TouchWiz is so slow, it took PA editors 1 week to explore it.
4. zuckerboy (banned) (Posts: 898; Member since: 22 Dec 2011)
I had s2 and it wasnt slow. I have no idea about current touchwiz
45. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
Current touchwiz is awesome and way better than the one the GS2 had. each year it got better as I switched from Samsung to Samsung. and with the GS5 it's the best ever version
18. tahirk (Posts: 25; Member since: 10 Apr 2014)
By a week they didn't meant it took them a week when they pressed the menu button & after a week it showed up. There is a world of difference between slow and exploring all of the available options.
46. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
lmao. Touchwiz has so many features, that an old guy reviewing it here got lost in the menu and it took him 2 weeks to know some of the GS5 features while it took me 2 hours to explore the entire set of features in mine. lmao. please tell me about sony ui or htc, the featureless old people brands. I guess It'll take him 2 hours to explore these.
58. chocowii (Posts: 441; Member since: 30 Jan 2014)
Thats the point so many bloats, so many useless features and apps integrated in TouchWiz it actually slows down the experience. The bad part? You paid for those bloats which goes down the drain.
Sony UI is pretty straight forward, yeah it will took you 2 hours to find what you need. It is user more friendly than TouchWiz.
59. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
Well, my experience is not slowed down, as these work when you click them. And h*ll yeah it has the Best camera and most awesome most advanced camera UI. sony UI is featureless, needs improvements and can't compare to Touchwiz in any aspect as it wipes the floor with it, although I've only seen a sony once, I was disgusted with the dark-so-deprived UI and it's nearly as terrible as stock android is. well, I guess we can't put the blame on sony, they're doing good, but it's a helluva task coming up with stuff that "compare" to a Giant like Samsung, so they use the too-much-features-you-don't-need compared to a featureless stock UI. 2 hours to explore my entire set of awesome features in my GS5, if it takes you 2 hours to find something in your phone, like the old guy reviewing it, well, I have bad news for you, you might need to check the heart rate monitor, or use an apple device it has even less features than a sony.
60. chocowii (Posts: 441; Member since: 30 Jan 2014)
Well I dont have a heart monitor, but I have an app for that with no extra cost, same outcome.
As for vanilla experience, I heard some entry level Moto was faster than S5.
And how come you know all of Sony's outcoming if you have only seen it once? Based on the way you describe your Sony UI, the dark theme was in Gingerbread/Jelly Bean/ICS days thus you compare it to the recent iterations of TouchWiz ergo the S5 which runs on Kitkat?
And I admit that Sony UI is featureless, but others call it lightweight. Its all bare essentials. Its bloatless.
And thats the reason why I like UIs other than TouchWiz.
I dont pay for bloats, things that I dont need.
I dont pay for cheating UI.
I dont pay for gimmicks.
And I dont pay for cheap, overused designed plastics that look like a giant Corby phone.
61. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
lmaooooooo. There's a reason I saw it once. there's a reason people prefer Touchwiz over anything else. and yeah lmao the excuse of lightweight because you can't match another UI. I pay for 575$ for apps and subscriptions I got with my GS5 and this means I basically got it for half the price since I use half those, and I use my phone to full potential that's why I own a SAMSUNG not an old-man-featureless-excuse-of-a-phone. and hey open your camera UI in your sony lmao. 21 megapixels, state of the art sensor, bla bla bla. can't take a pic. lmao the worse is that it can't take HDR, hey I use live HDR and all types of options and tweaks. and I see STUNNING pictures on an awesome young looking puchy screen. not a washed-out-barely-got-there-lcd. and that cheap over used plastic, it's what everyone loves and buys, while no one care about a rectangle made out of 1981 Mercedes E280 metal phone. seriously man, go get a life. Freakin Dinosaur.
62. chocowii (Posts: 441; Member since: 30 Jan 2014)
Ha. At least my Mercedes doesnt look like a beat-up Hyundai Band-Aid.
Take your Corby S5 somewhere else. Who loves cheap? You? You must be poor. Your Corby S5 doesnt even look premium. Heck the design even is not original. Dimpled? Thats so Nexus 7 2012. Magazine? Thats so Tile UI. Poor Corby S5 doesnt evolve the looks, same idea from the first Galaxy S. Oh and exploding batteries too! So terroristic. Got from your North cousins eh? Lol! Explosive and poor battery. Didnt even reach 3000mah. My Mercedes ran 100 laps while your Hyundai Corby S5 stopped at 3rd lap.
Camera dont shoot? No HDR? Better read reviews man. Ignorance is not an excuse here.
Give me a link that says Xperia Z2 doesnt shoot HDR coz of what I have known that phone can shoot HDRs.
Poor little kid, doesnt know what hes saying.
65. The13thKing (banned) (Posts: 849; Member since: 26 Feb 2014)
lmaoooo yeah and it gets a 3/10 rating for HDR here on this site ( which is a known apple lover and samsung hater) and hey READ the comparaison between GS5 and zf@rt at GSMArena. I had a laugh reading it. your 1981 Mercedes lmao yeah if it's turned on in the first place at 120 hp and a terrible rectangular design even a skate board would wipe the floor with it. I'm talking 1981 benz not 2011 so don't go slr and sh*t. hahahahaha battery life on my GS5 is awesome. lmaoooo so now a SAMSUNG is outdated and a f@rty no one cares about it sony is up to date lmao go to the nursery home they'll love you there. and my grandpa too. hey come to college old man carrying a sony/nokia/blackberry and watch people make fun of you and your beard dye. lmao what a l0ser. I would imagine going to college with a sony in my hand, the first thing I'd hear is " dude why the f*ck did you get this thing? hey guys, he brought his grand daddys phone" and you're saying about the GS5 poor and cheap? I find your sony old, poor, cheap overly priced failure of a cr@p with a deprived featureless ugly old man UI. and hey, you said who loves the GS5? well the tens of record breaking millions love it and adore it and own it and the others who don't, respect it. and neither do I or the World or Samsung itself, cares about the opinion of the 0.0001% internet buutthurt group who hate on Samsung. and hey, open Wikipedia search for Samsung and search for Sony. compare. lmao one is winning in billions and the other has been losing for 6 in the last 7 years. why people no buy good sony :( why no people see light :( why is are samsung bad :( #GrandDaddy #StopPreaching #OldPeopleLover.
66. chocowii (Posts: 441; Member since: 30 Jan 2014)
Gosh, no links? All talk no walk. You dont have proof to what you say little girl. Cant even prove that Sony doesnt shoot HDR. Guess this time you win. I concede, I wont go down your level.
70. KRONeage (Posts: 142; Member since: 17 Apr 2011)
All I'll say to you and this bogus Old Fart Reviewer is..... let's hear your complaints now about Samsung STEALING ALL YOUR iPWNED and Sony HDR..... less..... where oh where is your Xperia Z3.... dumbphones come year end sales totals? Samsung is again projected to blow iCrapphone sales, Sony who?, HTC, Motorola, Nokia sales combined off the charts.
Samsung will sell over 400 Million Smartphones alone this year and well over half of that will be high end Galaxy series phones. Including Galaxy Notes, Galaxy S series, Galaxy Active, Galaxy Zoom, Galaxy Mega, etc. How can Apple even compete with that. Let alone Crash n Burn Time Sony run by Sir Howie Stringnutz's clone in Kaz Harai!
And to think Sony, before Sir Stringnutz took over was #1 Electronics Company in the World. Apple wasn't even in the top 20 and Samsung was down around 7 or 8. If Ken Kutaragi would have been given the CEO position like he deserved, Sony may have still been #1. But.... they're not..... just like Apple isn't. Despite iDiots thinking they are over bogus "Most Valuable Company"? WTF?!? lol.... That title requires impossible qualifications to that and Apple and their fans always forget to mention they are publicly held and that's the only reason they can even claim to be #1 anything! hahaha.... Samsung is primarily Privately owned MegaCorp and Apple is just an iTrinket Maker controlled by it's share holders and brainwashed fans and iDiotic writers like this one!
BTW.... hope you know SAMSUNG is now the Largest CMOS fabricator on the planet, sending Sony down to 2nd place! ....the commenter you're responding to, has it right. You all are dissing on a company (right now the only true end to end manufacturer) for having too many features your moronic and iDiotic (for Apple) companies don't have!!!
64. 3rdDegree (Posts: 213; Member since: 13 Jul 2013)
I think LG's new GUI is probably better than Samsung's. It's finely optimised as well. Virtually no latency issues and much more mature in terms of aesthetics.
7. Lboogey6 (Posts: 281; Member since: 31 Jan 2012)
This guys is ridiculous i have had the phone for about a week now and the abilities are crazy not looking for gimmicks but the shortcuts and visions of possibilities no longer having to download certain because its built it
1. the settings its not confusing its plain and to the point you can even minimize the menus or search specifically for them learned it in a day im not some phone nerd but common sense is all thats necessary living in a world of apple with turn your brain to mush
2. fingerprint scanner although not perfect has taken a little while to get used to but generally first definitely second swipe is completed and from reading the initial articles its easier to use than was portrayed for instance if you generally swipe the side of your thumb you can do so it doesn't have to be the whole full pad of the finger.
3. like the person above said they found uses for it maybe there are features on here not for everyone you can't offer an article on something you don't use and say its pointless you would offer that it can be beneficial to some.
dealing with multiple phones on a day to day basis it stands up well with out the headache you all perceive it to be there are so many helpful tools on the device that when used im still very surprised and weren't thrown in the list of "cool" things. get off the high horse stop praising devices that do nothing, have little to no innovation and just a pretty device.and look at the attempts made to create new ideas whether they are faulty or solid.
the fisker looked amazing promised a lot ...fell short and was recalled to be blinded.

This never gonna be happen especially for icrap devices.... this site is samsung troller site..they always find away to bash samsung flagships...I don't know what sammy they to them really...! Funny.. even they bashing the best thing about S5.. the diplay that display mate explained the best ever and some greats features....best camera. Great battery. Water resistant. Best display ever. Ultra power saving. Multiwindow. Private mode. Kids mode. Download booster and so on..! Did you notice how stupidly they hyped ios8 belatedly features..(android copy features and very simple)..I think it obvious for every one that this site is the most bias site..! I recommend every one to visit Gsmarena site. Because they are the best review site I haver ever seen for about 10 years..they don't trolling any brand. Of course they say every phones cons and it ok but fairly..! I'm not saying S5 is the perfect one but troling one particular phone is simply the shame..!

iOS 8 also has a new hidden feature called Grayscale for power saving.
