Latest rumor recap pegs February for the CDMA-only iPhone, and the summer for the world version

0. phoneArena 20 Dec 2010, 06:04 posted on

The latest speculation on the Verizon iPhone comes courtesy of sources close to The Street analysts, and it pegs February as the release date of a strictly Verizon iPhone, of which there aren't enough quantities for a nationwide launch right now...

And let the people who are tired of these rumors line up. I for one like them, they're fun to read. I know people want real news, but there really isn't much happening now as phone companies are too busy with their Christmas promotions.

Who cares. Droid X is better than an Iphone anyways. Plus, anything you hear about Iphone from this site is always BS.

Must agree with vzwbarnegat, ip4 is less than impressive. Opted for the Droid X, great phone IMO.

So let me get this right. Apple is going to release an iPhone 4 CDMA for Verizon and then just a few months later, create a brand new iPhone for everyone. Why not just wait until summer to release it for everyone instead of redesigning and releasing a new CDMA iPhone on the slowest shopping quarter of the year?

jeff, VZW probably shelled out some big bucks to have a 5-6 month window of them having the iphone alone. the last study done showed that 25% of iphone owners would jump ship to vzw the moment its availible on vzw. Thats worth a few million down payment since ur talking a good chunk of ATT customers. Which if it actually happened would put vzw at/over 100 million customers and locked in for 2 years.

The smaller companies like sprint/tmobile cant afford to bribe apple, so they wait for the "world phone". Hopefully more phones become true world phones with all carriers signals.

But then we have two problems.

The biggest is that most folks would have already resigned their contracts for the Christmas season. People who would have been eligible for upgrade may already have Droids and by February, they will be far beyond their exchange/return day window.

The second problem we are talking about a complete internal redesign for a phone that will only be out for 5 months. Not to mention some very pissed off customers who rushed to buy the first Verizon iPhone only to find that a new new Verizon iPhone is out only a few months later. That feels a bit too much like when Apple dropped the price of the iPhone a few months later.

And as far as people jumping ship...lets not forget that AT&T just so happened to raise the early termination fee right before the iPhone 4 debuted. That $325 ETF will only be down to $245. Even before the new iPhone next summer, it would still be at $200. I'm sure folks would love to AT&T, but would they pay up to leave? Pay $200 per line to leave and then pay another $200 to go to Verizon. I know there are some who would, absolutely. But the majority...I just don't think so.

@jeffdabeat, I think you answered your own question... that and finding a way for apple to sell 2 phones in the same year to many customers.

Who says that if it is a CDMA version that it has to go to Verizon? Yes, Verizon would be the best candidate for a CDMA, but they are not the only ones that have a CDMA network. There is Sprint, Cricket, and quite a few other networks that could support a CDMA iPhone.

well first of all verizon talks to apple everyday I know that because even verizon reps and ceo has stated they have been ironing out a deal for 2011. Now yes it could be sprint but I wouldn't bet on it an as for the iphone only being out a few months before a new one it wouldn't matter because most people won't have an upgrade but will have to pay full price an when their real upgrade comes the new one will be out.

Oh yeah...let's go believing everything a sales rep says...believe me, Sales Reps are the last people you want to tell confidential information to because...as you have proven...they can't keep their mouths shut.

As a Verizon rep, I can tell you that sales reps know nothing about Apple signing contracts with VZW, and as a whole, are tired of answering "Is Verizon Getting the iPhone?" or hearing "Verizon is getting the iPhone in January, its all over the web!!."A VZW rep will be the last person to know when/if iPhone comes to Verizon. We don't even know about the coming month's promotions until a couple of days before it comes out. It is above our pay grade. Lots of people speculate, in and outside the company. I for one will be glad when iGate and the Holiday season is over with. I've been with VZW for 5 yrs and have "heard verizon is getting the iPhone" at least 3 times per year since the thing has been launched. Until I see it......it does not exist. Right up there with Santa and the Easter Bunny.

For Jeff.....as far as people already being under contract goes...I have never in my life been told by customers looking to upgrade that they are gonna wait for the iPhone in January so many times. I hear at least 10 times a day "I'm waiting for the iPhone before I upgrade". Just sayin.

Sincerely,

Hum-bug

Thank you! I also work for verizon and this is the most annoying question in the world! people are gonna wait along time to upgrade if there wating for the iphone but the droids are all better in my opinion so spend your money on something worth it...not the iphone just cuz all your friends think its cool.

When do I hope the Verizon iPhone comes out? In one word "Never". Why? CDMA is dead technology. It is mostly if not all manufactured by Qualcomm who have ceased development of CDMA. Also doesn't Vodafone (a GSM carrier who owns 40% of VZW) want roaming? And isn't LTE the *GSM* standard? If someone pulls the Signal card (A.K.A. Verizon has the biggest network) I say then why at my school (a place that all carriers[AT&T, VZW, T-Mobile, Sprint] say is covered) Verizon drops calls like nobodies bees wax and AT&T Gets Full signal pretty much everywhere and does not drop calls. I just after about 3 or 4 years of lobbying got my family to switch to AT&T now they like their phones better and have had no or close to no issues with the network.
GSM (not CDMA) IS THE WAY OF THE FUTURE!
My two cents,
Core2idiot

Oh well that's simple. There are certain areas and spots that do contracts w/AT&T or other companies where they get exclusivity agreements with cell towers.

GSM is NOT the future and isn't superior to CDMA...at least not for calling. Durr.

I understand that VZW has blacked out vactions for employees during the month of Feb. That is usually only done for the last two weeks of Nov and Dec.

Who cares? Aint nobody leaving AT&T for $300 and then turning around and paying $200 for a watered down iphone 4. People talk alot but I guarantee AT&T wouldn't lose more than 100,000 customers. Talk is cheap but not on Verizon!!!
