Latest T-Mobile ad ridicules AT&T network, touts 4G superiority

0. phoneArena 08 May 2012, 14:01 posted on

Fancy Carly's new attitude? Then you might be interested in checking out the latest T-Mobile commercial, which shamelessly ridicules AT&T and its wireless network. In particular, the 30 second video aims straight for the iPhone 4S (which technically isn't a 4G smartphone, by the way) and attempts to convince you that HSPA+ on a T-Mobile 4G smartphone delivers much higher mobile data speeds...

T-Mobile? What's T-Mobile? Nowhere to be found in my neck of the woods. :)

This is a dumb ad. Tmobile doesn't even sell the iPhone, yet they're making a commercial for it? Tmobile lost 700,000 subs last quarter and attributed it all to them not having the iPhone available. So instead of taking any blame with poor coverage, they shift the blame to Apple wanting too much money for their product.

When is someone going to buy T-mobile? Comcast, Google, or Apple someone needs to save this ship before it sinks.

That is one of the dumbest commercials I have seen for a phone company in a long time. I agree with the whole iPhone deal, they don't even sell them! Sure they can be jailbroken to run on their network, but it's not built specifically to do that. Just wow...

Or... lets think for a second maybe OK just maybe they attempted to kill two birds with one stone not saying its the best commercial but they showed faster speeds against a phone people think they need

I'm an android boy but c'mon r u serious!!!!! Stupid t-Mobile. iPhone isn't even 4g why the hell r they competing against it. Why don't you get a real LTE Android phone and test it out. Then well see who wins. IDIOTS!!!'

You are right... But may be they are comparing FALSE 4G phone of T-Mobile with FALSE 4G phone of AT&T...

that is exactly who this commercial is for, IDIOTS.

to show IDIOTS how much they are overpaying for an underperforming phone and network.

it is pretty obvious that tmobile is specifically targeting iphone users because they know that they are suckers for flashy marketing.

It makes sense, afterall, you think of AT&T when talking about iPhone. Unless the next iPhone get LTE, the data speed it's going to run on AT&T will be slower than T-Mobile. In a way, it could be viewed that T-Mobile is suggesting the iPhone users on AT&T to switch over when the refarming is done later this year. Either way, it'll be a whole new ball game between the top carriers once T-Mobile finish refarm and LTE rollout.

You guys have no idea how many people think the iPhone 4/4s is a 4G phone.
If you ask most technologically challenged people why they want an iPhone they'll say it's because it's the "fastest" phone. That's the demographic these ads are aimed towards.
I still think it's cheap though.

as of recent, the iPhone on at&t does now use HSPA+ and says 4G in the corner of the phone. But i know what you mean.

THe iPhone is not HSPA+ it is HSPA only. It runs 14.4Mps and not 21Mps.

As for the ad, I have had T-MO and cover is below average at best. Now any phone company will post speeds in certain market that they have great coverage to run these ads. However, in most locations it doesnt function like that. Currently I surpass most T-MO customer in Minnesota. Also its HSPA+ doesnt do what LTE does in AT&T LTE Markets like KC and Chicago, that I have tested.

a more fair comparison...

at&t's iPhone to T-mobile's (unlocked) iPhone:

at&t's (latest) 4G to T-Mobile's (latest) 4G
LTE Vs. 4G (HSPA+)

And the winner is, at&t. However the commercial was "ridiculous"

Not true

some of the 1900mhz spectrum is up, so technically you can get full HSDPA speeds on the iphone4s in some markets.

BTW, the iphone is NOT 4G HSPA+. Its HSDPA. lolol.

ATT's latest 4g has a selection of like 2 or 3 phones in like 5 markets. Nearly half of Tmobile's lineup is 4G, and its the widest 4g network in the US. So while you might get higher speeds in LA, I'll have higher speeds everywhere else.

Oh yea, and its half the price.

hey there not in my neck of the woods bud. I'll run 4g around all day long while you run 3g on tmobile in my area. Know the facts before you post.

Unless your neck of the woods is the entire US, your specific little point of reference has no validity. In my neck of the woods, i have Tmo HSPA+ 42mb/s, while ATT only goes up to 14 at best. Thats why we use national references instead of "your neck of the woods".

AT&T's iPhone is HSPA+ 14mbps. that's how they actually categorize it but really on average it's only as fast as the occasional bursts you can get on their HSDPA network. i've gotten a good look into it in the wild because i have a friend that's speed testing like mad to try to get anything comparable to even the lowest speeds i get on Verizon's LTE. spoiler alert, he can't get anywhere near it. xD

buddy my nech of the woods is half of maryland that tmobile and sprint do not have 4g in. Nationally everyone says they have the best.

hmm.. ive been through maryland.. i got 4g in a lot of it. you should check your phone or move closer to a city. :)

"my neck of the woods" is florida. Its flat and extremely well covered in all but the most back woodsy areas.

again, which is why they use national areas.

The only one that claims to have the BIGGEST 4G network is Tmobile. VZW claims to have the best calling network and super fast LTE. ATT claims that they dont suck and sprint claims they are unlimited.

Sounds like you stayed in the washington DC area. Checked Tmobile's website for my neck of the woods and guess what? they don't do 4g in any part of western maryland. So the arguement is that how can they say the have the largest 4g coverage when certain parts aren't covered and other companies do have 4g in those parts. And again Tmobile is using AT&T's network on top of it. Part of the merger not going through.

really? you dont get how they can say they have the largest 4g network in the US because they dont cover YOUR neck of the woods? Again, you do realize the US is much bigger than your back yard right? They go by total square miles of 4g coverage.. which is again, NATIONAL not local. Wow...

Tmobile isnt USING ATT's network.. ATT had to give it to them as part of the merger deal if it didnt go through. And the 1900 spectrum they got is not set up for 4g yet. None of that spectrum is counted in their "largest 4g claims", especially since they have been claiming that for a lot longer than the merger.
