LTE reference uncovered in general iOS 5 development builds
0. phoneArena 22 Aug 2011, 09:07 posted on
After the report that an iPhone with LTE reference in the iOS code is being tested by a carrier, and the tip that AT&T is installing LTE equipment in an Apple Store, comes the realization that this LTE mention is actually present in all recent development builds of iOS...

The iPhone is going to get LTE in the future. That is fact, I just hope it's not a year from now. Android has embraced 4G. 4G is spreading very fast & most people who do get a taste of 4G just can't go back to 3G. Apple I think is losing a lot of people because of that fact. The people Apple is losing are going to Android & 4G. Luckily Apple is making up for that loss with RIM’s customers jumping to Apple. What Verizon has done with their LTE network in such a fast time table is nothing short of incredible. Their LTE is almost just about everywhere. I truly think that an iPhone with LTE on Verizon would be HUGE. Android is capitalizing on the 4G. I think that is one of the reasons why Android has 52% of the U.S. market. If Apple can adopt 4G LTE or EVEN WiMAX on this iPhone, then Android's 52% market share would be challenged that is for sure! If not then Android’s lead will continue to grow because 4G is continuing to grow!

More than likely it will be a year from now with the way Apple releases their products. I think for the most part, even without LTE, iPhone sales won't be hurt at all and probably will be better than the last. Apple has the ability to get consumers to buy their product without them knowing much about it. You also have to remember some people like iOS better than Android so regardless of the iPhone 5's tech specs, people will buy it just to have the most recent iOS on the most recent device. LTE is still very relatively new with not many devices running on it so even if Apple comes a year late to the party, it won't be that big of deal. It should have been a given we wouldn't see LTE this year because these 1st generation LTE phones are battery hogs and Apple prides themselves on having great battery life.
7. SuperAndroidEvo (Posts: 4681; Member since: 15 Apr 2011)
You make good points, but most top of the line products are 4G. People want a top of the line phone to be 4G. Almost every phone that is coming out now that is considered high-end will have 4G. Whether it's WiMAX, LTE or HSPA+ they will all be 4G. If the iPhone needs to wait another year to get 4G, then it will only pad the lead Android has. I don’t consider a phone high-end or top tier if it doesn’t have 4G of some sort.
8. quakan (Posts: 1285; Member since: 02 Mar 2011)
If we're being honest most consumers don't care anything about tech specs. Usually your average smartphone consumer only wants to know if the phone can text, call, use the internet, and if it has apps. If you remember earlier this year there was a survey and in the survey it stated that many iPhone 4 users thought they had 4g. That tells you right there that your average consumer doesn't know much tech wise and they probably bought it off of hype or just simply the cool factor. Smartphones are now getting to be just like computers in the sense that they are only as smart as the user.
12. SuperAndroidEvo (Posts: 4681; Member since: 15 Apr 2011)
quakan you really thing people don't care about 4G? I guess maybe you are right, people outside of the big cities probably want a phone to text & make calls with, I can see that! I guess people in the big cities probably care more about 4G & all that good stuff. I really don't see the farmer in Iowa caring about 4G like a person in New York, Chicago, & Los Angeles. I see what you are saying!
18. quakan (Posts: 1285; Member since: 02 Mar 2011)
Outside of business and tech people, I don't really see people having a big need or want for it. Your average suburban, middle-class family is doing just fine with 3g. For the most part, I bet most people would say that it would be nice to have 4g but it's not a deal breaker. In probably 2+ years it will be but not now. If this was fall of 2013 it would definitely be a problem if Apple offered a 3g phone. The market is currently in transition from 3g to 4g so to expect everyone to hop on board with 4g right away can't be expected. Even your favorite android smartphone manufacturer isn't completely on board just yet; give it some time.

Once 4G has the kinks worked out, is more readily available, and manufacturers can figure out a way to maintain the longevity of their devices batteries... The iPhone will have 4G.. Or at least I hope they wait for that. If it's rushed, it'll be antenna gate all over again.
27. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
i wouldnt call that completely true Quakan. If people have 4g service or not they want "4g" phones. All day long at the store people ask "which ones are 4g, i want those"... even if they dont actually live in 4g areas.
Maybe it differs from area to area, but in my area if it isnt 4g, it doesnt sell well.. period.
32. SuperAndroidEvo (Posts: 4681; Member since: 15 Apr 2011)
That is the same where I live. Everyone I talk to wants 4G. Even people with iPhone 4's want 4G. Again that is where I live.
11. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
I disagree. In Q2 VZW iPhone outsold all 4G LTE devices combined. I think the new iPhone will have HSPA+ which will allow it to have a "4G" version that people can buy. Only people who will miss out are VZW customers, but I don't think that will hurt sales.
28. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
sadly, i agree with taco on this one.. i feel so dirty now.

remixfa I hear Yoda saying beware of the dark side! lol :-)
40. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
Verizon had one phone (Thunderbolt) come out in the 1Q and two come out in the last month of Q2. If you combine the battery issues suffered by the TBolt with the early service outage of the LTE network, you can easily explain the ware of the LTE shoppers.
Then look at the Apple supply problems because of the Japanese disaster, those folks who were waiting to be eligible for upgrade, and those who don't buy for the first month or two of a release thinking to see if there are problems first and I think you will see a different picture than painted by pure numbers.
41. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
You're contracdicting yourself. You're saying a phone is behind the curve if it doesn't have LTE then you say LTE phones have problems and that's why they aren't selling well. What?! Which is it?
The pure numbers are that the iPhone is outselling 4G phones by a lot on VZW.
42. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
The sale of phones has nothing to do with who is ahead or behind the curve the two have nothing to do with one another.
LCD TV's outsell LED TV's but LED is the newer better technology, LCD is the name people know, and LED is not understood by all. Get it now.
44. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
People understand 4G is faster though so that's a lame comparison. Plus this wasn't even the argument you used. You said it wasn't selling because of issues with the phones.
45. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
you know what you don't want to have discussions, share ideas or learn. All you want to do is tell non Apple users they are losers, and praise yourself for being smart enough to be an Apple owner.
In the discussions where Android owning 52% of the smartphone share in the US to Apples 22% you were not present, like the discussion about Apple falsifying documents in a Netherlands court, to try to stop Samsung from selling the Galaxy 10.1 tablet...NO TACO.
50. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Apple hasn't falsified anything. After reading up they had the actual phones and tablets present in court so the judge knew they weren't the same size or aspect ratio. Why hasn't Apple been sanctioned?
Good job android on giving away more copies of your OS than Apple has sold. Not a big accomplishment when you're giving it away.
46. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
just to throw some taco logic at you, most LTE enhanced phones start at 250-300 after rebate. So according to taco's long used logic, the iphone4 is selling better because its the cheap phone, not the better phone. :) :) :) :)
there, now i dont feel so dirty. :)
13. dandirk (Posts: 187; Member since: 04 Aug 2011)
LTE is a factor right now for Verizon customers only. AT&T will come later, but won't really be a big deal a year from how.
AT&T customers will say "Does it have LTE?"... Rep will say," AT&T doesn't have LTE right now, so it does't matter"... Customer: "uh ok iphone please"
Sure AT&T will get LTE through out the year... Some people will miss out, but by the time their LTE coverage matters, iphone 6 or 5gs or whatever will have LTE.
21. biophone (Posts: 1900; Member since: 15 Jun 2011)
I had a thunderbolt which is 4g and switched to an ip4 and i am much happier. The thunderbolt has a very high return rate so it seems alot of people have tried 4g and went back to 3g. I know it has a high return rate because when i returned mine they told me that.
47. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
the Tbolt was last years junk with an LTE radio parading around as a primo phone.. and it definately wasnt. Its a 1.5 year old Evo with 4g.
62. biophone (Posts: 1900; Member since: 15 Jun 2011)
The tbolt was a very good phone. It had lte the evo didnt thats huge. What sucked was it was so big and bulky and the battery life was so poor. Otherwise i would of keeped it. The ip4 is so much better. I dont care that it only has 3g because of wifi.
66. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
the tbold and the evo are the exact same phone.. the tbolt just adds LTE. The thing had an undersized battery, LTE sucks major juice, and the single core snapdragon used is a battery sucker as well. Im surprised it could ever get off the charging cable.. lol.
2. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
Well, the next iphone should be at least HSPA+ if nothing else. If it actually comes to Tmobile I would be shocked if it wasnt HSPA+ 21mb/s capable. Or at least that crappy 12mb/s HSPA+ ATT likes to call 4g.. lol
5. SuperAndroidEvo (Posts: 4681; Member since: 15 Apr 2011)
I just think that if Apple doesn't have a 4G iPhone then it will be a very bad mistake. As 4G grows, so does Android. I am willing to bet WP7 will have a 4G phone before Apple does if indeed the next iPhone is only 3G!
29. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
Wp7 has 4g phones comming any day now.
HSPA+ IS 4g. If your talking LTE 4g, its not gonna happen.. Apple already said as much.. at least not for this next iPhone. But having HSPA+ onboard this time should be a given.. and if its on Sprint, probably 60/40 chance of it having Wimax.

Not even LTE. Will save iOS5. Not even NFC will save iOS 5. Not even magic punk flying bears who shoot gamma rays out of the GUI will save iOS 5...
You get the idea.
What could have saved iOS 5 but wasn't announced in WWDC? I'll give you a hint:
It starts with W, ends with S, and got I, D, G, E and T in between.
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, iOS is dead lolz.
6. quakan (Posts: 1285; Member since: 02 Mar 2011)
Right everyone is just dying for widgets. Ha please.
10. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Yea widgeets are where it's at. The killer feature of the 21st century.
Come on man do you really think widgets are a deal breaker for anyone lol.
30. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
as soon as iOS 6 comes out with widgets you will say apple invented it, and should sue google for daring to using it 5 years before them.. or you will have widgets and go "OMG now i see what those smart android people were talking about".. lol
well, more than likely at least the first part of that statement will happen.. lol
36. SuperAndroidEvo (Posts: 4681; Member since: 15 Apr 2011)
Don't worry when iOS 5 is finally rolled out they will say they invented the notification system, that Android copied them. Apple probably has a patent for that! lol
15. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
Don't forget live wallpaper. iOS is nothing without that killer feature as well.
16. dandirk (Posts: 187; Member since: 04 Aug 2011)
iOS will NOT die, pretty much no matter what... Just like I do not think android will die no matter what.
iOS has a market penetration large enough to almost require people to continue with iOS. From purchased apps, books, music etc...
Even if the Apple marketing wears off (like with Nike from the 90s) they will still be a market presence.
Google is sort of in the same boat, except they have less product that is wholly dependent on Google services (aka books, is a big one) and Android dependency.
9. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
My thoughts are that while Apple may come out with an LTE version in a year, where will the Android devices be at that time. One step ahead of LTE is what I'm thinking, based on what it's been up to now.
As for the part of the article that talks about the Thunderbolt and the cost of LTE radios for phones, the Andriod LTE phones are still competitive with the iDiotPhones and why, that makes a difference I don't know.
14. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
LTE is going to be the standard for years to come. It's upgradable to 1 gigabit per second speeds.
There is no one step ahead of LTE and won't be for a while. You're the typical uneducated android user. High school diploma or less.
17. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
Yeah... show your intelligence by name calling. If you are so smart you would know that my statements go to the fact that Apple is trailing of the rest of a market in the technology of a product. And rather then trying to play catch up the great ones are putting out smoke and mirrors to hide the fact that they are behind the curve and aren't trying to get ahead, they are just trying to convince those truly not tech saavy that their product is ahead of others.
BTW you are wrong on your guess of my educational background.
19. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
You contradict yourself by calling the iPhone an idiotphone thereby insulting all iPhone users first of all.
2nd iPhone is not behind. There's only a total of 3 LTE phones in the US right now. There's new android phones coming out all the time that are 3G. Are those phones outdated too?
31. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
the iphone is behind on features, tech, OS sales, data speeds, phone size/price options.. and everything.
The only thing it is ahead on is profit per device and iSheep worship.
43. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
when the iPhone came out in 2010 it wasn't behind on any of that and still very competitive with new phones coming out now.
You're just a hater androne and jealous because you see all the satisfied iphone user while you're stuck with a half baked OS and crappy hardware.
48. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
lol, taco your an iDiot. (havent reminded you in a few days)
My galaxyS and your iphone4 (if thats what you actually have) have the EXACT same SAMSUNG hardware.. oh yea, except I have the bigger screen.. thinner.. lighter.. capable up to 48gigs of memory, better daytime viewing, better battery life, true multitasking, better notifications, widgets, your favorite live backgrounds that noone uses, OTA syncing of all my information, music, contacts, calandar, updates, pictures, and every other feature that iOS5 is trying to pretend its inventing... im not stuck overpaying on ATT or VZW, its faster than an iphone on either network..., and no my software is extremely stable. It may not be samsung factory software but who gives a damn. :)
i know u love ur iphone, but its so far behind you cant see the competition infront of you.... thats why u THINK your ahead somehow.. lol.
49. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
and except for the music sync and automated picasa sync (it was manual before) android has had all those features for quite a while. and thats not even a full list of what you dont have. :)
53. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
better battery? you just lost all credibility with that statement. You listed contacts and calendar as features? Really?
Lol you're pathetic. You're stuck on android and T-Mobile which is a double whammy.
56. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
calendar and contact AUTO SYNC and backup. You still have no reading comprehension do ya? lol
great example. I just updated my calendar on my computer with all the coming stuff for this semester.. within a second it was already on every phone and tablet I own without wires. Try that on your iphone. Same with my music, pictures, contacts, settings, and a half dozen other things.
all automatic, seamless, and wireless.
if you think that paying half the price for VZW and ATT while getting faster service than ATT and VZW is a double whammy, then its no wonder your such an iDiot.
And yea, i can get nearly 3 days out of my smartphone with mild use and a day and a half with heavy use. Woopsie.. hate to dispel your android myths.
59. gallitoking (Posts: 4704; Member since: 17 May 2011)
"i can get nearly 3 days out of my smartphone with mild use ".. exactly... mild... you have a galaxy S phone capable of doing amazxing things.. and you used it mild??? is like bragging that they have a Corvette and use for grocery shopping...
63. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
if you have a corvette you dont drive it at 130mph every day of the week.. sometimes you only use it to get to the grocery store.
is this like customizing? lol.. you really are losing it gallito and becoming a notorious iDiot on taco's level. just saying.. lol
Some days i use it for everything from netflix to games and recording video.. some days i use it for the occasional text and playing wordfeud. (remixfa on wordfeud if u think u can take me :) )
you cant tell me u use your jesus phone for the exact same thing at the same time every day of the week... and if u cant, then this argument like the customization argument hold no water what so ever.
68. gallitoking (Posts: 4704; Member since: 17 May 2011)
i will request you on wf... look I am giving you my point of views.. and tyou are giving me yours... thats all.. i am not being un real... but you are by tell me that T-mobile is the best network.. i dont demand much from my phone.. I am not a techie thats why specs mean nothing to me... but around here I am learning..jejejeje.. but stil dont customise.. maybe because i dont know how or dont want to.. but i dont.. so i defend that point...no trying to be a jackass.. it comes naturally ..lol..
20. Biophone! (unregistered)
What smoke and mirrors lol. Lte advance runs at 1 gig a second. That is going to be the best avaliable for at least ten years. When the iphone has lte it will be comparable to android data speeds. Maube lag behind in processor but not lte. Anyway i expect an a6 which is quad core for the ip6.
22. gallitoking (Posts: 4704; Member since: 17 May 2011)
first of all I all thsi 4G talk and in reality is not 4g ... 24 mbits, and I dont know of any phone here in the US that gets half of that... second, verizon which is the bigest LTE supplier only has 3 phones with 4G so, and none of them have broken any sales record, that tells you that we dont want 4g until they get it right, and not drain battery.. I dont care if my phone can go into the internet at blazing speeds, if I cant call my babysitter after work because i have no battery....
51. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
Tmobile phones right now are capable of 21mb/s, the websticks are capable of 42mb/s, and when the Hercules launches, they will have a phone capable of 42mb/s. Faster than anything else out right now. :)
Thats 4g baby :)
23. darth8ball (Posts: 519; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
First off, I'm not calling the users of the iPhone idiots. The phones design is to simplify the technology so that even the most basic of users can have advanced technology. That was what I clearly stated in my post when I first let everyone here know I would further refer to the iPhone to the iDiotPhone.
Secondly, I never used the word "outdated" but if you want to know my opinion, yes any phone that comes out without LTE now, is behind the curve. That is because LTE is the most current and fastest data system and those phones that don't make use of LTE are behind the times.
Lastly, not everyone who drives a Rolls Royce, Bentley, or Monarch could fix it or diagnose a problem, does that make them uneducated. You may well be educated but from reading your posts you lack common sense.
24. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
so simple is for idiots now? Why not go back to using DOS interface on your pc. Windows is for idiots.
33. wumberpeb (Posts: 452; Member since: 14 Mar 2011)
Ugh, no DOS. Even hardcore nerds don't wanna deal with DOS anymore
39. taco50 (banned) (Posts: 5506; Member since: 08 Oct 2009)
exactly because simpler is better
54. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
android is very simple. its called "set it up". once you spend 5 minutes doing that, the phone runs itself. Maybe having "options" scare you.. but if u use said options u will be much happier.

yeah, those task killers that need to be run constantly really run themselves.
64. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
funny, i dont use a task killer. and when i did, it had an "autokill" function that ran itself. amazing!
37. gallitoking (Posts: 4704; Member since: 17 May 2011)
my comments were not for you .. but since you mention it you are wrong... 4 g is in progress. or since you are a techie.. let me use the phrase,... still loading... ok..verizon has 3 phone in 4g, 3 phones for the biggest carrier that has the best 4g coverage?? please tell me friend that you are joking, .. so if you want to be the guinea pig and try the 1st gen 4g phone .. be my guest, I will wait until is proven as for me my phone is very important to be playing aroung like that...
