LG Nexus 4 to roll with HSPA+42, twice as fast as expected

0. phoneArena posted on 30 Oct 2012, 17:25

So there is no LTE connectivity for the LG Nexus 4, those of you riding the data waves over HSPA+42 might end up getting your data quicker than if the device was compatible to Verizon's LTE network; the newest Nexus handset supports the faster HSPA+42 instead of the HSPA+21 as originally thought...

Not interested, thank you very much!

How? :o

Seriously, are you not on Tmo?
Cuz that's the only reason you could have for hating this phone...

He has different taste...

34. MeoCao (unregistered) posted on 30 Oct 2012, 19:26 3

well Nexus 4 is not for every1 obviously so it's normal when some do not like it.

But this phone will appeal to many and even first time smartphone users can buy it and it will raise the loyalty to Android brand substantially.

49. PhenomFaz posted on 31 Oct 2012, 04:00

I was a little skeptical of the design and materials used by LG but the more I look at the pics and videos the more I like the Nexus design with its all glass finish and LG's patented crystal-whatever tech but yeah I am sold to it

32. Non_Sequitur posted on 30 Oct 2012, 19:07 7

Wow, yeah. The Galaxy Note 2 definitely didn't have this when I tried it at Tmo. Should be freakin' awesome.

45. richardyarrell2011 (banned) posted on 30 Oct 2012, 23:37 3

The Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, Htc One S, and now the Nexus 4 all run on Tmobile's hspa plus 42MPS network and it just works fantastic..

50. Non_Sequitur posted on 31 Oct 2012, 04:22

Huh...

40. Danre posted on 30 Oct 2012, 21:41

Me 2.

43. richardyarrell2011 (banned) posted on 30 Oct 2012, 23:33 3

I have been telling people often that hspa plus 42MPS network of Tmobile is pretty stable and a great experience. People on Verizon is Strung out on Lte when they don't need to be. Tmobile and it's HSPA network is rocking...

46. remixfa posted on 31 Oct 2012, 00:04 2

if your in a metro area, you need to give it a shot.

Yea, im sorry, but 1/2 the price of VZW for the same super speed... WIN.

buy the nexus, get on the unlimited tmo prepay plan, save money.

57. metalpoet (unregistered) posted on 04 Nov 2012, 17:18

too bad i crave LTE for my carrier, this phone had potential for me. Oh well Ill just settle for my GS3 until next June :)

2. droiddomination posted on 30 Oct 2012, 17:33 2 1

does att network use 42+? also, eh emm..i am first.

4. ahhxd717 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 17:35 3

I don't think so. I think they stopped at HSPA+21 or probably even 14 in most parts, since they're doing LTE now.

6. PapaSmurf posted on 30 Oct 2012, 17:37 3

AT&T deploying HSPA 14 at the beginning and then rolled out HSPA+ 21 near the end.

12. darkkjedii posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:05 3 5

Yes they do use 42 Mbps hspa+ the iPhone 5 has it

17. nak1017 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:15 1 1

Correct, HSPA+42 is most just a software upgrade for the tower so AT&T should have it just about everywhere

3. droiddomination posted on 30 Oct 2012, 17:34 1 1

dang well i am second. slow att network.

23. TheMan posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:42

No. Even slower than that.

31. bigdawg23 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:55 3 2

Not sure where you are but many locations I go AT&T is faster than VZW in all technology(3G & 3.5G(HSPA+) & LTE).

5. wumberpeb posted on 30 Oct 2012, 17:37 3

Great news for ATT and T-Mobile, but it still drives me nuts that they're alienating Verizon and Sprint entirely...Hopefully this changes in the near future

7. Zero0 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 17:44 13

They're alienating the CDMA carriers because the CDMA carriers destroyed the purpose of a Nexus: A pure Google device with timely updates.

22. jan25 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:41 1

ask any owner of Verizon's G Nexus about his experience with updates and you will totally understand why Google wants the Nexus brand to be consistent with what it has to offer.

56. wumberpeb posted on 31 Oct 2012, 18:45

I totally understand why they're doing it, but as a sprint customer, this does nothing for us. Sprint wasn't nearly as bad as Verizon was with their galaxy nexus, but now this means I won't even have a shot at the phone. Maybe the Optimus G with have great developer support for those on CDMA networks, here's to hoping...

8. Captain_Doug posted on 30 Oct 2012, 17:46 2 1

Eh, all I need is a minimum or 3-5mbps. An average of 6 at T-mobile seals the deal. Totally switching. I'm on wifi enough that I don't care who provides my service. Just that I can send texts, make calls and whatnot. Data? whatevs.

11. Galen20K posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:04 2

the fact that I get 20 to 25Mbps regularly on T-Mobile’s HSPA+42 in my area, makes this an Exciting and viable option. LTE can wait until next year as far as I’m concerned, I’m not suffering ; )

13. Mr.Mr.Upgrade posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:07 3

Im not surprised.....most of customers on tmobile making the lines uncontested for use......plus.....if you notice if your flagship phone is not on Verizon.....it doesn't stand a chance..... Like lg optimus or any other phone....

14. Berzerk000 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:11

I'm not sure what kind of HSPA+ I get in my town... Is there any way to check?

20. wassup posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:39

Yes, browse. if it seems fast, it's good enough.

52. Contreramanjaro posted on 31 Oct 2012, 07:40

I wanted to hate this comment but I do agree. After all my testing, whether on 90Mbps WiFi, 10Mbps WiMax (oldschool I know), or my 12Mbps home connection, somewhere around 6-8Mbps I just can't tell a difference, on a phone at least.

58. remixfa posted on 04 Nov 2012, 19:07

you cant tell the difference between 8mb/s and 30mb/s browsing on a home computer either.. its all 'instant' at those speeds.

The rest is bragging rights. Unless your doing some heavy tethering or large file downloads you will never have a need for such speeds.

Regardless, HSPA+42 is just as fast as current LTE.

21. denn90 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:39

Do a Speedtest On Your phone . Download the Speedtest app From The Google Play Store from ur phone

25. Berzerk000 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:42

I have done that, I get about 12 down. But that doesn't really show much, considering 42 is just a theoretical peak. But most people tend to be showing 20-25 down their area with HSPA+ 42, so I probably have HSPA+ 21.

15. HectorSanchez957 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:12

I'm confused about AT&T's HSPA+...does AT&T use the full 42mbps or just 21mbps? And how do I find out if I got it in my area?

18. gallitoking posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:19 2

is a good deal if you live in those selected 11 cities. hope they are major cities

19. jroc74 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:27

LTE is great n all... but I have only seen a max of 20-25Mbps on average on Verizon in good to great reception areas. With a RAZR, G Nex, Rezound, Maxx HD. DC area.

If HSPA+ gives me 20Mbps on the regular, Its all good.

So many ppl were up in arms about no LTE....this is a good option. AT&T might get a closer look from me. Not because of this, but a combination of things.

24. TROLL posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:42 1

Will be enjoying this here in the UK, very soon... 42mbs wow thats much faster than Wifi?

27. Berzerk000 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:43

That's just a theoretical peak. Most you'll probably see is 25, but that's still faster than a lot of people's WiFi.

29. fistigons posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:52

Hey troll I'm heading to the UK in February. I'll be living there for the next 4 years. Do you recommend any good/cheap prepaid services? I'm leaning towards Vodafone right now.

35. TROLL posted on 30 Oct 2012, 19:44

Sorry im still not sure, cause its only vaiable on T.Mobile and Orange, its only on post pay, but soon very soon in december or Jan should be on Voda, and o2.

36. fistigons posted on 30 Oct 2012, 19:51

I've also been reading about this thing called giffgaff that uses O2 network. I might be leaning towards that as soon as it becomes availiable on O2s network.

53. wassup posted on 31 Oct 2012, 07:57

I would reccomend going 3, they have a £15 Sim only plan (you buy the phone full price from elsewhere), and it gives you unlimited net, and 5000 texts with 600 minutes (I'm not sure about the minutes/texts thing, but I am sure about the unlimited data), and their speeds are pretty damn good!

28. fistigons posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:48

I just wish that google would charge $400 for a 32gb nexus 4. I would be sold.

30. Techboi posted on 30 Oct 2012, 18:54

Why do carries build 4g lite and Hspa+ seem to be just as good, and even better when it comes to battery life?

42. cmikeh2 posted on 30 Oct 2012, 22:31

LTE is more efficient with bandwidth and generally has lower latency.

33. squeeb posted on 30 Oct 2012, 19:12

win!!

37. jackhuny posted on 30 Oct 2012, 19:59 3

If you can reach 21Mbps on you cellphone who cares about LTE?

38. neutralguy posted on 30 Oct 2012, 20:23 1

Good luck with this. The advantage of having an LTE network is that, even if there's many subscriber in a cell, the speed is still fast. The reason HSPA+42 is faster is that, it's not being used by most subscriber unlike LTE. Given this, you could get faster data transfer/internet connection because less subscribers are using same connection.

39. TechnewzGR posted on 30 Oct 2012, 21:27

For it's price it's a very good deal, it has HSPA connection that is as fast as you need for a mobile. In Athens at speedtest app i have scored 20 MB/s with my SGS III. And has also NFC that phones two times more expensive have not...

41. JusMePnut posted on 30 Oct 2012, 22:13

I thought the one on the Google store only supported 21+ and the one tmo is releasing supports 42+...

44. Troysyx posted on 30 Oct 2012, 23:36

Wow! If Google keeps this up, I'll buy a new nexus phone every year! :-D

47. Techboi posted on 31 Oct 2012, 00:23

O ok kool i learned something new

48. legend1 posted on 31 Oct 2012, 02:32

54. wassup posted on 31 Oct 2012, 08:01

change where you live. problem solved.

55. jaytai0106 posted on 31 Oct 2012, 10:14

The price and the lack of LTE network in my area, I'm going to get one once I see a full review. It's a bit more than a phone with contract ($200), but it's worth it to play with the new Nexus for sure.
