LG G5 sales are off to a very good start in South Korea
The LG G5 launches today in the US and other regions around the world, but in the company's home market of South Korea, the phone was released a day early

According to the first estimates from local industry watchers, LG G5 sales are off to a very good start.

Analysts quoted by The Korea Heard in a report earlier today claim that LG sold about 15,000 G5 units during the first day of availability in South Korea. That figure is three times greater than the 5,000 G4 units the company sold last year when it launched its 2015 flagship smartphone. As per the report, KT Corp., the second-largest mobile carrier in South Korea suffered a network outage which has delayed up to 2,000 additional sales.

By comparison, Samsung is estimated to have sold 100,000 Galaxy S7 and S7 edge units in the first two days of availability in South Korea.

Even if these estimates are accurate, it remains to be seen if the phone will manage to maintain a healthy commercial performance in the upcoming weeks and months. If it does, the G5 might just be the boost that LG's mobile arm needed to reach profitability. On the long run, analysts estimate that LG will sell about 10 million G5 units by the end of the year.

While the previous LG G flagships maintained a relatively affordable price, the G5 is now priced similarly to the Samsung Galaxy S7. The LG G5 is a premium affair with blazing-fast internal hardware and a unique 'modular' design. It also has a bit of a wow factor in the LG Friends accessories, which range from a VR headset and a 360-degree camera to a battery add-on that also acts like a camera grip. The device, which LG markets as a metal smartphone, is actually a plastic-metal hybrid: the top layers are plastic, but the inner ones seem are apparently aluminium.
