It's the end of life for the HTC EVO 4G, Samsung Epic 4G and other Sprint models
0. phoneArena posted on 26 Jul 2011, 12:32
The first 4G enabled handset in the States, the HTC EVO 4G, is being phased out by Sprint in both colors offered; other handsets that have served their usefulness include the rugged Motorola i1, the BlackBerry Style 9670 in Gray and the Samsung Epic 4G...

Wow, this is why iPhones are better. At least those can last over a year unlike any Android phone.

If iOS had as many options out as Android does, the models wouldn't last as long as they do. Similarly, if there were only one Android phone released each year, the older models would continue to be sold alongside the new ones, to give the illusion that there are multiple options. Stop being a troll.

While I agree The_Miz is trolling, he's not exactly wrong. Now that they'll stop selling these only 1 year old phones, how long do you think Samsung/HTC are going to take to churn out another Android update to these handsets, if they make any more updates at all? Owners of these phones still have another year until they are eligible for their next upgrade.
Owning an iPhone 4, I think it's pretty nice that iOS 5 will support the iPhone 3GS (2 year old device) on the same day that iPhone 4 gets the update.

I do agree with you about the support for older models. But the way I see it, it would be better to phase them out to move things forward.
Yes, there will be iOS5 support for the 3GS, but would it be as good an experience with that model? I don't think so. The processor is old and it would not handle the OS like the new models (iPhone 5 or 4S and 4). Same goes with android. If they don't phase out these older models, it wouldn't be long before they wouldn't be able to give good user experience with the hardware-software imbalance.
I do understand the economical implications of this. But then again, we need this to keep things moving forward.

Of course I am not wrong. Manufacturers purposely do that so you can go and spend more money on a new phone. Oh wait, I forgot you can only upgrade after two years now not like the original year like it used to be.
25. Uzzelien posted on 27 Jul 2011, 06:53 0 0
That would depend on how long they've been with sprint. I can get the full upgrade each year if I wanted to but I don't. You have to remember this really isn't news. HTC has the evo 3d now so why have the first evo and the evo 3d? The same goes with Samsung. As far as apple goes...well they turn out a new phone each year it seems like also. The dirty thing people aren't telling you is iOS 3-4 and I'm sure 4-5 costs 15.00. While the others are free. There will still be people out there making new android updates for them I'm sure and you can also load strait android on them. Really EOL is just EOS ( end of support ) for them.

iOS is all about "quality" over Android's quantity, which is why a lot of Android phones just plain out suck.

the Evo has been out quite a while and there is a new iphone every year so nothing you say has merit or makes sense, Miz.
... like normal..

The Evo has been out for more than a year, genius.
26. remixfa posted on 27 Jul 2011, 10:35 1 0
exactly, you just negated your own statement genius. That was my point.
"At least those can last over a year unlike any Android phone"- Miz
And the GalaxyS has been out over a year too.

You don't get it, unsurprisingly. They're ripping consumers off. See Apple is awesome because A. they still support the 3GS to this day and B. iPhone > Android.

The_Miz... Again with the Trolling? This article has nothing to do with the iPhone. Just stop.

Why don't you read my ****ing comment first before shooting off at the mouth.

What exactly does this mean to owners of these devices? I have 2 Epic 4G's, 1 Evo 4G and 2 Transforms on my plan. Will Sprint simply quit selling the devices? Or does it leave us out in the dark when it comes to any new Android updates too? The Evo has been great and is running 2.3! All of the Samsung handsets have been buggy since the 2.2 updates. And it took a LONG time for Samsung to post the 2.2 updates too. This will definitely be a factor to consider when we get new devices. But for now I am holding out until I see some official data on Sprint's plans for the future. There are so many rumors and so much speculation flying around out there now for Sprint (i.e. LTE vs WiMax, new specturm, etc)

it simply means that if they are truely EOL devices youll have to go the way many other Android phones do XDA devs i was runing gb on my hero way before htc even thought about putting out a gb update to evo

u will still be able to get them devices through insurance if they mess up so they will still be supported but not sold through the store i had a samsung moment :-( now i have a evo 3d...luv it
9. downphoenix posted on 26 Jul 2011, 16:47 1 0
occassionally you get a great phone liek the Evo out there, why EOL it? Its hard enough to find a decent phone for a cheap price, they should just keep making them and at the 99.99 price, then knock it down to 49.99 and eventually free whenever free phones typically will have these specs before they EOL it.
10. dvancleave posted on 26 Jul 2011, 17:35 0 0
I agree! My local Sam's Club currently sells the black Evo and Epic for $24.96! Why not keep them both around as entry level phones? I think one of the major hurdles the Android OS faces is the hardware variation. Windows and iOS both run on fairly beefy hardware. Sure there are some heavy hitters out or forth-coming in the Android arena. But there are also a lot of entry level phones out there with lame hardware running Android OS. And those phones tend to give the Android OS a bad rap because they tend to be slow, quirky and have high failure rates.
13. remixfa posted on 26 Jul 2011, 18:58 0 0
because most consumers dont care about the hardware. They will look at the Evo and the Evo3d and say "well this one is 100 bux cheaper so ill buy that one" and it will cannibalize sales of the Evo3d.
11. RORYREVOLUTION posted on 26 Jul 2011, 18:30 0 0
I doubt this would happen. But wouldn't it be awesome to have the HTC EVO and EPIC under the prepaid plan?

End of Life? Did anyone else notice the reintroduction of the LG Lotus and Samsung Rant in Sprint's Lineup?
17. robert1990 posted on 26 Jul 2011, 22:10 0 0
why is it that they discontinue phones like the evo and epic tthat are only a year old, yeat they continue to offer phones like the lg lotus, motorola i 365, samsung instinct which are 2-3 years old

Usually when they stop making a product and you have issues with the device you have and you have insurance they will upgrade you to the new device.
