It's official! Google buys Waze

0. phoneArena 11 Jun 2013, 14:45 posted on

Google has purchased crowd-sourced navigation app Waze for as much as $1.3 billion; rumors of such a deal started leaking over the weekend. Waze uses real time traffic information from users to help other members get from one place to another while avoiding traffic, accidents and radar traps. Parts of the service will be integrated into Google Maps...

Waze traffic features baked into Google Maps would be heaven.

Not compared to the damage the competition getting it could've have caused in the long run. It's not just the current or future data of Waze, but the way it works is now in Google's hands and that's a goldmine other players clearly wanted for themselves, they just went too cheap.

Oh, Google, no wonder the waze app was packed with cool new features ahead the competition and felt buggy like android. Now it all makes sence.
Just kidding, it'll be fine, other than the google ads of course ;)

I think I like this. Just recently used Waze for the first time and it's not bad at all. Not to start a flame war, but I am glad Google got it and not Apple, only because it would have most likely become exclusive to iOS. But with it going to Goole, both OSs will have access. Hopefully WP, BB, and others in the future will too.

That is the biggest plus for users of all viable platforms that Google won out in the purchasing of Waze. It will now be shared and not exclusive to one vendor. Lets face it if either Apple or Microsoft had picked up Waze they would have made it an exclusive on their platform alone. With Google picking it up it will be on iOS, WP etc.. Hate or love Google one thing is for sure their strategy of being on every viable platform is brilliant

I'm hoping that this makes Waze better. The first thing I want is to get rid of Bing from Waze and replace it with Google. The second is I would love for Waze to be able to use the Google data to provide even better traffic information. Third, get the up to date mapping data from Google. In Metro Vancouver, Waze shows part of the city to be under water. At least the roads are still there and I can drive on them. Also, they have to stop making Waze recommend an off-ramp that has been closed for a year due to construction.

I was hoping that this would happen. Frankly Waze is a better match to Google than FB, Apple, MS. Looking forward to Waze traffic features integrated into Google Maps and possibly Google+ ? Notifications from people in your circles would carry more weight I gues, and given the strong community of Waze users, this could allow Google to grow G+ even more and make it ever more useful.

Also I imagine it would get baked into Google Now too via GMaps.
