Is the NVIDIA Tegra 4 faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800?

A new report has been issued that says that the NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor is faster than the top of the line Qualcomm Snapdragon 800; the only problem is that the report is not based on real performance of the two chips since neither one has been built and instead, some information released by NVIDIA at MWC along with data from a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro was used...

wasnt this tegra 4 put into benchmark before yet it apple's ax chip still outnumber it? or was that a different chip

no it was against tegra 4
but this was just gpu perfomance not cpu as well

Actually, NVIDIA showed results of tegra 4 and it beats Ipad 4. Tegra 4 got 57 fps in glbenchmark offscreen 1080p and Ipad 4 gets 51.9 fps. In CPU Tegra 4 wins ofcourse by a great margin.

and even if it beat the ipad 4 it will be just 5 fps different from a tablet from the last year " when a tablet is released with tegra 4 it would be around 8-12 months from the ipad 4 "
but i say it's just a prototype and the final version could be better

But it is still very good of NVIDIA because every time they published a new tegra, everyone outperformed it, but now they can´t, in a few months it will surely be outperfomered again. And that link that you send, it was just a prototype.

yes it's very good
but there are no new gpus until now
adreno 320 is from the last year
a6x chip is from the last year
and we didn't see the new gpu in the new ipad " expected to be the moster " or the iphone
or the gs4

We will know who beats whom only when the final products with these chipsets are launched. Until then, calculations, estimations blah blah will not really matter...some jobless reporters/analysts writing some nonsense for chip that are not even manufactured sounds silly...Beating benchmarks is not a big deal if you increase the clock frequency to the max limit as they do not care about power or thermal. But final products do care a lot about Power which tegra failed till now in the products that were released....Lets wait for final products...

well said....I have a feeling that Nvidia was desperately looking for ''customers'' aka handset makers which was why they did the Antutu stunt. Only the final product that matters ayt.

i don't think so and even if it does snapdragon 800 has far more interesting features and fully supports open gl es 3.0

We haven't even seen SD800 benchs or Adreno 330 capabilities, plus the Tegra4 scores were on a heat-sinked wall-powered tablet that was probably overcloked to crap for attention. To make things worse, if the 4 is too hungry for phones, there's no way in hell nVidia will be competitive with the 4i, which is A9 rebranded.

Tegra 4i won´t be able to beat Snapdragon 600 in cpu performance, but in raw GPU will probably win Tegra 4i. Tegra 4i should have 60-80% of the power that Tegra 4 has and Tegra 4 can outperform Ipad 4 in GPU benchmarks so that means that Tegra 4i will have around 50GFLOPS in raw GPU performance, which is more than adreno 320 which has I think about 35 GFLOPS. Ofcourse raw performance is not everythink, Tegra 4 GPU does not have unified shaders for example so that will make it weaker for example in triangle throughput.
Tegra 4i should be pretty good, because ´´according to NVIDIA´´ it should be very power efficient and if it will be overclocked to 2,3 GHz as NVIDIA said it will be pretty good. Tegra 4i is also build on the latest A9 architecture r4p1 so it should bring some more performance.
Snapdragon 800 vs Tegra 4, that will be a pretty interesting fight, we´ll just have to wait, because it is all just speculation. And by the way, you really trust Quadrant? I can not believe that everyone uses it. Use glbenchmarks, much more reliable, but it only a software so even glbenchmark can be optimized, right?

But what about Antutu?
The Exynos octa is also ARM A15 based chip, clocked at 1.8ghz, just like Tegra 4.. and has an early scores at around 26000.
That's only 3000 points ahead of the 1.7ghz snapdragon 600.
What makes Tegra 4 so powerful in comparison? (unbelievable 36000 points)

A tweaked test unit ( ie...complete disregard for battery efficiency) doesnt reflect the final product scores...36000 oh well, we shall see.

Impressive score by the tegra4. But ever since I bought a Lenovo s890 (1.2ghz MTK Dual Core + 1gig RAM + JB) the phone is smooth sa buuuuutttteeer! I now don't fully believe in CPU benchmarks anymore. At the end of the day what matters is how OEM's optimize their phones to perform great.

Nvidia is ALL TALK....why cant they just wait for the final production handset before they brag? People dont want to see a tweaked guinea pig tablet that runs ''awesomely fast '' with Tegra4 in it....It wont be long till Exynos and Qualcom thrashes them yet again....as it was proven from time to time

I'm not too worried about which is more powerful. At this point, the 600, 800, 4, 4i and even the S4 Pro are more than powerful enough for me. I'm more worried about which is most power efficient. Also, I'm still on a Dinc2 so any of those will be a huge upgrade.

These new chips are so fast its crazy I dont care any more which has the more powerfull processing
Only 2 thing for me are important 1-power efficiency and 2-gpu
those are what they should really be focusing on

That is true, but it can also depend on that Tegra 4 or 4i are not even not on market, they will soon. The only processor which is available is Snapdragon. I´d also guess that Snapdragon apq8064 and 600 are cheaper than Tegra 4.

Tegra 4i is half the size the snapdragon 800, hence more power efficient than snapdragon

TEGRA 4i is for mobile and tegra 4 is for tablets.

We can keep arguing which CPU is faster, but without a well equipped hardware phone and a well balanced software to sync with the hardware, the CPU will never see its full potential. It's like only care about putting big engine in a car and ignore all other components. You are not going to win all the races

The Tegra 4 scored higher than an Intel core 2 duo on some tests and that thing needs a fricking fan and vents and a huge battery. Sounds like Nvidia designed strictly for benchmarks and not actual performance, but we shall see when both are released.
