Is Verizon allowing online upgraders to keep unlimited data even with a new subsidized phone?

On Saturday, a rumbling from Verizon customers seemed to suggest that those upgrading to a new phone online were being allowed to keep their unlimited data plan; Verizon has dropped unlimited data and has been trying like crazy to get grandfathered customers to switch to a capped data plan through an equipment upgrade...

I work at verizon and over the weekend we have not had anyone keeping their unlimited data. I am assuming it is a glitch in the system. Verizon is nothing if not consistent with their policies. I can call our higher ups and ask if he knows anything about this.

Honestly, with as many people in the comment sections that seem to be getting this to work, I can't see VZW doing anything to fix it after the fact. They would A) have tons of bad publicity from this B) Those receipts are legally binding contracts, and once the phones are delivered they could face legal issues from it C) if they attempted to "switch" people after the fact, then they could be opening themselves up to a FCC investigation for bait and switch. So, wayy to much to lose on VZW's part to not honor those that got in under the "glitch". Their only hope is to "cancel" the orders before they ship. (like BB and Amazon do when they screw up a price on their websites and people jump on them.)

They will cancel the orders, trust me, same thing happened with the Thunderbolt. Remember, that phone had the wrong price on the website when ordering went live on Vzw's Iconic Portal; those orders were delayed until contact was made with customers who had been able to place orders with the incorrect pricing.

That I can that see happening. But we'll see if some of these folks get shipping confirmations. That will be the final line of defense for VZW. After it leaves their warehouse, they are screwed.

Javac, you should further advise these fools that, even if they thought they got away with it, there's no way they keep their Grandfathered Unlimited Data on a subsidized Smarthone or an iSubsidized phone. The risk just isn't worth it; they must happily buy full retail like all us happy folk' with Unlimited Data and SuperSmart Galaxy Note II's, or SIV's, or One's, or Ultra Maxx's, etcetera .... etcetera ... etcetera ...

VZW can't arbitrarily change the terms midstream. That's bait and switch.

As much as you would like this to be so all Verizon has to do is tell them it was a mistake and refund them the product. There are many ways for them to correct this if it was a mistake. If the customer does not recieve the product and recieves a refund then the contract is void.

That's what I said. But if they charge the customers card then they will have a hard time wiggling their way out of it. So if the phone ships they are pretty well screwed. They can't just call you after it ships and say "we made a mistake, can we refund you and you forget this ever happened". See my reply to Bernoulli above.

If it ships then they wont care they will let it go and wait for them to sign a new contract. It really is not that big of a deal to Verizon. They are still the number 1 network at the end of the day. Plus 4G LTE-A is coming our way soon

1. It won't ship.
2. Online (phone/contract) orders are reviewed and manually processed; customer enters card information but, the card is not charged until the order is processed and item (phone/s) ships. Hence, all phone orders online are really "pending" until processed.
P.S. Bernoulli is a bitter former Verizon subscriber, his input itself is as null & void as the orders discussed herein.

I completely concur. There are few technicalities however,
let us recall Contract Law 101: "Offer and Acceptance" technically speaking, not until the customer "accepts" (or in this case receives) the phone is the "Offer" binding and, as with most contracts, it is not until the contract is fully executed that it becomes binding and, since Verizon (we assume) has not shipped said orders, it may make revisions (or corrections) to its' "Offer". It could also be a sneaky way of trying to trick people who have Unlimited Data to bite; I aint' stupid and I aint' bitin'.

Your also forgetting that both parties have a 14 "trail period" in which either party can cancel. it is rare for a carrier to cancel a contract but it does happen. I still dont think that verizon will do this but there are many ways around it. Verizon will most likely not care and move on with business as usual. Think about this they are well in 1st place in America i doubt they will make any changes. They will fix the "glitch" if it is a glitch and move on. once the LTE-A comes out no other carrier will be anywhere near on par with Verizon. They are well aware of this fact as well.

And, the people who placed orders with that glitch will have a decision to make: keep the subsidy discount or keep Grandfathered Unlimited Data. I'm happy with being able to use over a hundred Gigs when I want to.

I can't quite agree with you, i manage a verizon wireless indirect store in Chambersburg Pa and did about half a dozen upgrades over the weekend and each person kept their unlimited data. I even used my wifes upgrade to alternate Iconic order the Note 3 and even our DM used his upgrade to Iconic order the same thing and we both got to keep it. Im assuming either this is a glitch (maybe someone got fired and had capability to do this before they left) or since they screwed up millions of upgrades from the 20 month contract realignment to 24 months or one last thought, maybe verizon's iphone sales haven't been the greatest and they prob know exactly how many people still have unlimited data and an iphone so its possible they are doing this so they can meet the contract obligations they have with Apple. As everyone should know, if you don't sell the amount of iphones in your carrier agreement with apple, you get to pay a hefty Fee*. Which is why corporate stores over the last few months were pushing the hell out of the iphone even though its almost the worst gross profit smartphone.

I purchased a Note 3 yesterday and it allowed me to keep my unlimited plan. If they try to change things up I'm going to cancel my service. I've been looking for a reason to quit them anyway.

There is no reason you shouldn't be good. VZW, for all it's flaws, isn't dumb enough to try and screw with your contract after they ship the phone. That would be on every major news network in 24 hours if they did. That's not the kind of publicity that VZW, or any company, would want.

I'll probably head to Tmo and save about 50 a month. At this point, any changes to my plan are going to cost me 40 more a month according to VZW's on online tool. 2gb was never reasonable to begin with. They thought 5gb was reasonable in 08 on EVDO, so why is 2gb the new reasonable when lte is cheaper to operate? I get it's supply and demand, but VZW and ATT should be brought up on charges of collusion. I mean it's awfully strange that their pricing structures are nearly identical minus a few nuances. And when one does something, the other follows within a month or so. (and never to the customers benefit) Which makes one really wonder if they are competing at all.

Just be aware of tmobiles plans man. i wont try to stop you but their plans come with paying for the phones monthly as well. that adds about 20 bucks a month. you also have 500mb at $50, 2Gb at $60, and Unlimited at $70. But you also have your $20 a month for a phone assuming you have good credit. Just be careful of the fine print man

I've read the fine print. I know they throttle you at 5gb, but that is still a reasonable solution and a reasonable "cap". 2gb is not. Also, myself and my fiancee use android, and my mother uses a dumbphone. So I can get cheap nexus device for 300 instead of the 600 though VZW. Then the best part, VZW doesn't get the change to gimp it(like they did with my S4) and load it with bloat. I know I b!tch much about VZW, but as a long time customer(06 for me and 04 or something for my fiancee) I feel like VZW doesn't want my business anymore. In the last 2 years(since roughly the time they got the iphone) their pricing and willingness to be competitive has practically stopped. I get they are still adding customers, but they are running long time loyal customers off. So I'll be interested to see their churn in the next year or two, because they are not the same company I used to deal with.

They dont throttle you at 5gb. they will throttle you at 500mb, 2gb, then 5gb. if you are going with the 5gb plan you will be paying around $90 per line that is on that plan. The 5Gb plan is priced at $70 per line, then you have to add the $20 for a smartphone per month. If you do 2 of those you will be paying around 180 for just 2 lines. The other companies are doing things like t-mobile. you pay 100 now and $20 on you bill for the next 24 month. They are not as good of a deal as you think they are

That's what I just said. I just priced it out using the "unlimited option" for lines 1 and 2. 3 for the 500 mb option. So that means I have 5/line on the lines I care about. It's not 70 per line, please go price it for yourself and stop selling for a moment. I was going to take a screen shot of the page, but it doesn't show everything in the frame so it would be like 3 jpegs. So I'm not going though all that. according to tmo's checkout it's 130+ fees/taxes monthly. So add the max of 30 / 2 phones and it's still only 190. (assuming financing) This is particular to my specific account, but VZW at 6 gb was 240 IIRC. At the minimum of 2gb on my current none share plan is 180 base vs. my current 159.xx. I pay 195 a month now, so add 35 to 180 and it will be 215, just for attempting to stay a VZW customer. Also, with VZW, you still have a new device charge + upgrade fee. So ~240-250. So really all VZW is subsidizing is about 400(maximum subsidy). So really, once you equate them, it's 800/24 (two brand new s4's as an example) =34 a month +130+ taxes fees= approx 170 to 180. SO it's not 180 for two lines, it's one 180 for 3 lines, one line with 500 mb in data(which I don't even have on the third line now) and UNLIMITED everything else.

Huh? How? I don't see how he isn't paying that above when it clearly states what you pay minus the usual. There is no overages, so if he is paying more then he must be on an older plan and going over, or a billing error.

My sister pays $180 for 3 lines on TinyMobile - the 3rd line is a senior add-on for my Mom with 500 minutes at $5.00 monthly plus unlimited International Calling feature for $15.00 monthly. In reality for her first two primary lines she pays $160 which includes installment payments for two Galaxy S 4G's (with no 4G) and they got her to sign a two-year contract on both lines (I know - dumb), so she basically got ripped off then raped by the magenta network. Her first two lines are out of contract now; she's finally seen the light - she'll be a comin to Verizon on October 10, she'll roughly be paying the same for two lines but at least now she'll have consistent cell service and something called 4G LTE (which she still hasn't gotten on the flaming network).

But phone 2 and 3 cost less to add unlimited ($50 and $30, IIRC). And, once the phone is paid off, that cost disappears. On Verizon you keep paying the same built in subsidy forever after you've paid of the contract term.
Yes, Verizon has better nationwide coverage, but they can't come close on price. You'd need to go with the 14gb share plan to even compare to T-Mobile's unlimited. You pay a good $20 per month less including the cost of the phone with T-Mo. The math is indisputable.

lol, supply and demand has NOTHING to do with it, its greed vs greed, and everyone knows its, PC WORLD did a study over 6 months ago as why carriers are giving you LESS data (less data meaning you go threw it much faster because data speeds are much faster today), or eliminating unlimited data, and found out facts that it has NOTHING to do with network congenstion , its ALL about the $, so if all the carriers gave everyone 25GB limits every month, no one would ever see any problems relating to network congenstion... so if you think 2GB today is the new 5GB, just wait til the LTE-A is available, then 1 GB will be the new 2GB, LOL! you get less data, but can do more in less time,

My Verizon phone has been sitting in a desk for six months now. I've been using T-Mobile on my Nexus 4 and all the calls from my Verizon phone have been redirected to it. I've unofficially cancelled the service and I was just waiting for a good reason to officially do it. Verizon does have slightly better service and that's the only reason why I've kept it but it's a waste of money to have service on two phones while only using one.

I actually considered a trial run myself. I'm going to see what comes of the N5 and if it has storage options >32. If it does, I'll probably pay cash for the N5 and run it on Tmo for a few months before make the full run off the cliff. Plus it'll give me a chance to see it's roaming capabilities is a very rural area.

Even though I don't have it, T-Mobile still has their $30 plan with unlimited text and web and 100 minutes of talk. I needed more talk time so I went with the $70 plan. I think I'm going to try Straight Talk on AT&T's network for a month to see how it works. It only offers 2GB of data but it costs $45 a month.

The 30 would be perfect for me. I don't like to talk on the phone, I just text. In fact, I hate face to face conversations. lol. I think that is why I became an engineer. I'm waiting for the N5 before I make any changes though. Thanks for the heads up.

I have that plan with the Nexus 4 for my son. The rest of the family is on Verizon. Since I couldn't get him added to my plan with grandfathered unlimited data, Verizon lost that sale. When they eventually make the grab for the grandfathered data, they will lose the rest of my family (3 smartphones)

I really hate Verizon. They jerked me around when I wanted the 16GB iPhone 5S on launch day. It took me almost a week to get my iPhone and then I have to go to another store and ended up with the 32GB version. As soon as my credit balance runs out (which is in the hundreds of dollars), I am considering all my option including paying the ETF and going to Aio.
I had a Pantech USB 3G modem and the 3G speeds sucked. I then tried 4G LTE with Samsung modem/router (aka jet pack) and the modem sucked -- kept losing the connection, slow connection speed, crappy battery, etc. Btw, I am loving my ATT 4G LTE Liberate MiFi as well as VM 4G WiMAX. Unfortunately, the WiMAX is going away now that I have an iPhone and if Verizon is good to me, I might cancel ATT and use my iPhone as a mobile personal hotspot.
The biggest problems with Verizon is how they nickel and dime you to death, when I had the 3G service, I had such a low priority on data access that I was usually the first to get kicked off the network and don't get me started on data disconnection issues on 4G LTE service.
It would have been nice if Verizon let their prepaid accounts use iPhone 5S at 3G speeds for as little as $50 a month with Walmart special with unlimited talk, text, and 1GB of data. It's only $45 a month with Straight Talk also at 3G speeds.
I have no bills for the next few months, which is nice.

Your story is utter fabrication. If you wanted the 16GB model you should've lined up with the rest of them. As far as data connectivity, it was probably that marvelous antenna in that iPhone you previously had.

It took me a week to get an iPhone? That part is true.
That I had a credit balance in the hundreds of dollars in my prepaid account? That is also true.
Two weeks prior to the iPhone launch, I went to the Verizon company store, and spent 10 minutes with one of their salesperson to walk me through going from prepaid to postpaid (which was a $30 upgrde fee) and then I go on a 2-year contract to get the discounted phone for a $450 savings.
I got there on launch day, the 16GB of Space Gray was not sold out and then the store proceeded to jerk me around for days. Even the store Manager lied to me. I kept their business cards.
As for the Pantech USB device, I had to use VZ Access Manager, which I still use to this day on a PC. At the time, I did not know about Control-D, the secret password and changing the number or code that sets my status for receiving data, which I had to find out via the internet. I changed the number/code from 1 to 8, even though I could have set it at 15. All I wanted was to avoid being kicked off the network (this was like 2008/2009/2010 time frame) so some of the precise details escape me.
As YOU KNOW, with VZ Access Manager, YOU GET A LOG of your activity -- so whenever I spoke to tech support, I offered to send them this log of me being kicked off the network on a constant basis. It was the same crap with 4G LTE -- I again offerred to send in the log of how my Samsung jetpack kept disconnecting -- they could see the frequency of my unfortunate forced terminaions along with error code, etc. They just weren't aware I was tracking my usage via VZ Access Manager since it wasnt required for the LTE jetpack.
The sad truth is I can back up everything I said with receipts, other evidence, business cards, etc. I keep extensive paper trails for this reason. I had no idea my prepaid money would move to post paid, had I known that, I would have gotten an iPhone 5. Then a sales reps told me the money will move. And once the I confirmed everything, I loaded a bunch of top up cards at 15% discount so I wouldn't have to pay a bill for six months.
Believe what you want to believe. And one more thing, this iPhone 5S is my first iPhone -- I was an android user before switching.
