Is Samsung blocking Froyo OTA update on T-Mobile?

It seems that nothing can remain hidden these days after the WikiLeaks saga and tech is no exception. Samsung is the last victim as now a tipster suggests that the South Korean company is blocking a software update to its T-Mobile flavored Samsung Vibrant…

This right here is why I will never buy a samsung. I was so very tempted to buy the fascinate when it first came out but I am pretty please that I didn't. While spec wise it is a very nice phone I refuse to buy something with an outdated software which apparently, If these phones ever get updated to 2.2, they will already be outdated by gingerbread. I have a droid X, and I am pretty handy with rooting my device, but I would prefer if my stock phone would get the regular updates anyway. To be honest this is really pushing me away from android, If every time I buy a damn phone it gets outdated and the only way to catch up is to spend a few more hundred dollars.

I feel your pain, i bought an android device and a year later it was out of date and I could not update to the new OS. I switched back to Blackberry I want an OS that lasts not trends.

I completely agree. It is just a fukcing scam to get you to spend more money!

I also have misgivings about the whole android situation. I am not considering anything android driven unless produced by google for the same reason. A friend at work just bought a sony x10 and was proudly waving it round at work until I informed him that sony won't be pushing any updates beyond 2.1.
I would like to jump on the WP7 bandwagon but according to statements last year updates need to be vetted by networks who can veto them. So I shall wait to see how the first updates progress across the board.
I'd love to ditch the iphone. After 14 months the battery has long since had its best days and without forking out lots of money i am stuck with a useless brick. At least with WP7 I can change the battery. Continuous updates with WP7 in a similar vein to apple would be a lovely sight to see.

There is no excuse when there is already the Vibrant 4G running 2.2 software....this means that the software is up and running but just dont want to give out the update. I refuse to believe that it is something that they are still "working on"

Order iPhone battery from Miliamp & replaced it yourself. I can do it in 15 minutes, screw Apple for charging $85. Make sure you order the right battery if you have iOS4 on iPhone 3GS

my vibrant has had 2.2 since like september. its called XDA. samsung has popped out tons of 2.2 roms for the vibrant, just hasnt pushed any to Tmobile. I was really waiting on the galaxyS-2 as my next phone but i might just have to find something else in protest.

not everybody wants to flash a rom on to their phone you know.

True, but the mere fact that XDA and its HUGE Dev support is around makes manufacturers lazy. I'm pretty damn confident that some manufacturers think that if we all want more out of our phones, if we get desperate we'll just go flash a custom ROM......

I LOVED MY VIBRANT, BUT WENT TO HTC FOR SENSE UI AND FRONT FACING CAMERA, AT THE TIME,, I HAD WISHED THE VIBRANT HAD A FF CAMERA. NOW IM TEMPTED TO GET THE VIBRANT 4G BECAUSE THAT WILL HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED IN A PHONE, AND THEN THAT WILL BE MY LAST PHONE EVER!!! OTHER THEN THAT SAMSUNG CAN KISS MY ASS!!!

That's why there wont be a update to 2.2 because we have shoppers like you. Samsung don't even upgrade their phone much. Look at the nexus S, gingerbread and front camera... what else? And ay such price again? No to Samsung. I would consider getting an iPhone instead. Stable build, one update. Keep up the promises. Complete in one package. A lot of companies are still trying to catch up with apple on certain areas. Im currently a vibrant user. Running on stock 2.1 with one click lag fix. Yup.

Constant CAPS are for those that lack confidence in vocabulary. And are proven marketing suckers constantly buying the next product.

Same stuff with the cappy - luckily XDA takes care of the upgrade for me :-)

Same goes for Sony Ericsson folks. They originally promised life time support to the flagship x10 ten months later the phone and support is scrapped to support greater revenue from the upcoming Arc. Sony Ericsson and Samsung are VERY disappointing in this manner. HTC has been fairly true to its upkeep..... i mean correct me if I'm wrong but isn't even the G1 running froyo at this point? Talk about dedication to product line.

no, the g1 runs 2.1 not froyo.
no company is perfect, even HTC. They have left many customers in the dark. Ask mytouch 1.2 and slide users how they feel about updates..
after the cliq one of my main requirements for a new phone became "easy root and decent xda development", just to make sure i didnt get left too far behind. The vibrant is very easy to root and has a huge xda development crew doing things that sammy wishes it could do.
Again, take 5 minutes to flash a rom, its that easy... or quit bitching and wait.
1) its literally "download one click root app", root the phone in 60 seconds
2) download clockwork mod from the market, one button custom recovery install.
3) Download Nero 4.1 from XDA to phone memory, 1 button installation through clockwork mod. DONE.
Special agent Oso could frikkin do this. Quit being a panzy.

Samsuck strikes again. It's all about the money with them, they don't really care to much about the customer. Carriers really need to turn up the heat and force Samsuck to provide better support for they're products.

Samsuck and Sony illfuckuintheassagain are both the same
Money money money
Its never been about the user experience
Motorolla, HTC and even Nokia at least try their best to get their current products right before releasing a new product. I've never bought a Moto, and it might be my next upgrade - or HTC if they release something that bests the Atrix or Bionic
