India wants to be considered for the name of the next Android build

0. phoneArena 13 Sep 2013, 19:53 posted on

A week ago last Tuesday, Google surprised everyone by introducing Android 4.4 and announcing that it would be called KitKat; before Google made the introduction, it had been assumed that the next build of the Android OS would be 5.0 and would be named Key Lime Pie. But now that Android 4.4 is reality, what will the next build be called...

Pretty cool idea, especially how important India is to the future of smartphones and Android particularly.

Huh? India's no more important than China or the USA when it comes to the future of smartphones. India ain't a sweet so forget it..

I'm not sure what you meant by "India ain't a sweet." Surely they have sweets in India?

I would've said the same thing had China been lobbying for a dessert name as well. Traditional European-American desserts are fine, but other things would be cool as well.

(By the way, I am exactly sure what you meant by :"India ain't a sweet." Because you didn't read one word of the article, you thought India wanted to name the next iteration of Android "India." I only feigned ignorance to give you a chance to respond, but I guess this parenthetical defeats the purpose. Whoops. My bad...)

they are talking about a dessert originated from India called Ladoo. It's a sweet yogurt too sweet for my personal liking.

I support this move to be inclusive of cultural sweets.

Your right Cheetah2K, China is more formidable when it comes to the Android amy of users there, Nokia still rules the Indian market and im not talking Lumias either, the Nokia 3310 is still very much alive there.

They want it to be a famous sweet. they dropped key lime pie as it is not popular. The next iteration will be lollipop for sure. other choices are- liquorice, laces, love hearts, even ladoo is ok... lassi never is that even sweet..

I'm gonna have to disagree with the idea that key lime pie isn't popular, or well known.
I don't know how well known it is globally, but I'm pretty sure in every supermarket in the US at least, you can just walk in and order one, or buy one prepackaged. Hell you can buy key lime pie flavored yogurt cups, key lime pie scented cleaning agents and crap like that. I'm sure it isn't as conscious in people's minds as KitKat bars are, but that isn't much.
And strictly speaking I don't think sweetness is the criteria they're looking for when choosing names. Android 2.2(?)-2.3 was Gingerbread after all, and 3._ was Honeycomb.

im digging the Lollipop has a nice ring to it, rather than Indian Android id rather a more generic sweet that we are all familiar with. which was the reason why Keylime pie got rejected in the first place.

He probably saw the title and thought they were going to literally name the next version "India."

Either that or he's just promoting the title of a book or movie or something, which would explain why every word is capitalized.

Both of the Indian names are a terrible idea. I hope they don't even give it any thought.

Oops, i'm an Indian and i'm sorry to say this but i will not like names like that...it totally messes up the vibe and makes me wonder who even thought of that idea. Stick with the English dessert names...

I think the vibe was messed up enough when they went with KitKat... Why not take it a step further?

(For the record, the two unofficial names for the versions before Cupcake were "Astro" and "Bender," suggesting famous robots were originally considered. I think this would've been cooler than desserts too.)
