Images of Sony Ericsson Windows Phone prototype come to light

0. phoneArena posted on 16 Jan 2012, 19:46

Two images of a Windows Phone model for Sony Ericsson have been leaked by NokiaWP.net which swears that it is running Windows Phone 7.5; the design of the device seems to indicate that it is a side-sliding QWERTY model which may or may not ever get released...

Didn't Sony and Ericsson split? Please explain!

This phone was before the split.

I like the slide keyboard, looks very spacious

And this is what all side-sliding QWERTY's are failing miserably at. Phone screens are getting to be 4"+ but the QWERTY pads are getting smaller when there's nothing but key real estate on these devices. I love the space between those keys, and I hope it makes it to market that way.

Me too am confused about that. In CES, the official announcement of splitting of SONY and ERICSSON was made (source: PA) and some new devices were announced like Sony Xperia Ion. But, to my surprise, in the first images of the phone from CES posted by PA, I still saw that ERICSSON persistent. I couldn't make head or tail of it.

I hope PA will do away with that confusion that has struck on its readers like me!

What was demoed at CES are prototype phones, not final retail units. They do have the "Sony Ericsson" branding, but the final models (ion, Xperia S) that will be available for purchase by the end user will be branded (and distributed) as Sony only.

What we see in this news is also obviously a prototype. If / when it gets announced, we expect it to be a Sony, just as the previous two models.

not bad but the keyboard looks like that on the Kin 2 and it felt like it was built by Playskool.

Was the last sentence of the article just added or did you all not read the whole thing?
Looks like a nice phone. I'd like to see Sony make a high end slider for android

Like "Julie", this prototype will probably not see the light of day. SonyEricsson already announced way back 2010 they will not release any WP7 phones. Unless of course, Sony (not saddled anymore with Ericsson) decided to reverse that decision. In any case, if released, this will only be the 2nd WP7 phone with a physical qwerty keyboard so maybe a good way to come into the WP7 arena. But this might be the Xperia X2 with an updated Mango OS

Wasn't this last year model that didn't got launch?

Urm...Sony entering the WP7 phone market...bye bye Lumia :)

Would love to see a Sony effort for WP. Their is a lot of excitement about their products now that they are not saddled with a partner that is only halfway onboard. Be nice to see them compete for both Android and WP.

Side sliding keyboard and wp7 don't go well together . Side sliding keyboard and android do go well together . Well I hope this sports a 12mp camera like on the satio and LTE

WTF does a keyboard have to do with an OS!?

13. idgaf posted on 17 Jan 2012, 01:01

In Android when you open a keyboard everything reorients to landscape but in WP7 only a few things go into landscape.

14. tigermcm posted on 17 Jan 2012, 01:05

sooooo the home screen doesnt go to landscape is all I've experienced what else?

22. snowgator posted on 17 Jan 2012, 11:36 1

Also the XBOX live page, the main home page and the secondary home page that lists all your applications and tools as an alphabetical list, and the Marketplace hub, and the Office hub, .......

As much as I enjoy WP, this is a pet peeve of mine. I miss a physical keyboard, and a little more landscape support would encourage more form factors. Portrait sliding keyboards are just not as popular, so those are not readily available.

folks Nokia has a following in Japan maybe Windows smart phones are selling well enough in Japan for Sony to make just one model to cash in and make a profit. The
Nokia 900 has sent shock waves out already. Other countries are calling out to sell
the Nokia made for America Nokia Lumia 900 and it will probably sell better overseas then in America because that is were Nokia market strength is Remember Nokia is an international Company

Sony supporting Windows Phone?
Very little chance, as WP has Xbox Live which is competition to Playstation Network.
Even so if Microsoft remove Xbox Live, i'm not sure they would be willing to support WP.
