Okay, we get it, emjois do make life more interesting, at least as far as messaging goes. No doubt there...

Why couldn't Google adapt their own?
PS call me old fashioned, but they'll always be "emoticons" to me.

"Emoticons" is actually the original name.
"Emoji" began as a type setting in japanese as well as kanji(chinese alphabet) and romanji(latin alphabet) in which they used typed characters(and not "emoji") to make drawings (like （≧∇≦）or ★彡)
Since they were the ones to make the most "creative" use of it, the very word leaked into various english dictionaries (as well did "sayonara", "arigato" & "otaku")

I don't know if bbm uses the Unicode emojis but they're the best set of emojis IMO
