"Emoticons" is actually the original name.
"Emoji" began as a type setting in japanese as well as kanji(chinese alphabet) and romanji(latin alphabet) in which they used typed characters(and not "emoji") to make drawings (like (≧∇≦)or ★彡)
Since they were the ones to make the most "creative" use of it, the very word leaked into various english dictionaries (as well did "sayonara", "arigato" & "otaku")

I don't know if bbm uses the Unicode emojis but they're the best set of emojis IMO
