Huawei's Mate 9 has sold more than 5 million units, four months after its launch

Huawei's bet on smartphones seems to be paying off, judging from its ever-increasing sales numbers. In a recent press conference, the company shared that it has so far sold more than five million units of its early 2017 flagship phablet, the Mate 9, which is a 36% increase over its predecessor's sales for the same period of time.

In comparison, Huawei's previous mainstream flagship, the P9, has sold 12 million units in a year, whereas the Mate 9's 5 million were reached in just four months. This shows both a greater trust in the company's devices, as well as increased interest in its larger form factor phones. However, as Android Central points out, these numbers most likely cover the multiple variants of the phone, which include a Pro, Lite, and Porsche Design models.

This may in part be due to the Mate 9 being the company's biggest push internationally so far – the phone even launched in the United States, a country where Huawei traditionally has little to no footprint in, though this is a problem it's been trying to fix for a while. So even though it's one of the largest vendors in its home China, the company still has much room for growth outside of it.

The P9's performance, with its 12 million units, was also 152% higher than its predecessor, the P8's. As for Huawei's latest flagship, the P10, the company is initially aiming for sales of 10 million units, though it plans to surpass this in the long term.
