I think it will retain the same screen width as the current 4S but will be elongated to approach the more Nokia like 16:9 dimension. I'm sure Apple will announce a 16:9 patent soon, as well.

I'm pretty sure she's old enough to know what she likes. There's nothing wrong with wanting a 3.5 inch screen. 3.5 to 4.0 is good for me

Yeah apple wont go past 4'' and even that is a big difference. In my opinion the new iphone will have a 3,7'' display with some new cool feature :)
But I've never owned and never want to own an iphone so I dont really care. I'm sticking with my (for iphone users) MASSIVE Gnex and S3 :D

Same discussion from last year...huh? Gonna tell us again how 4" won't fit in a pocket? For years now apple users have thought we buy special jeans. Sigh.
WHEN it is exactly the same size....AGAIN....we will hear how "perfect" the size is and retina display blah, blah, blah.
Maybe you luck out and get 4g. Shrug. Only two years behind the tech. Enjoy!
47. DontHateOnS60 posted on 31 Jul 2012, 12:00 0 0
Fanboys wouldn't want a 5" display or 4" display. They'd argue that 3.5" is all you need, and they'd be adamant about it until Apple made a 4" display for the iPhone and then they'd jump on that bandwagon. C'mon now...
56. E.N. posted on 31 Jul 2012, 13:43 3 0
If you take break from yapping for a moment and think, you'll realize that if the Apple releases a 4inch smartphone, then 4 inches would be the smallest screen in any top smartphone being sold. So unless current Apple users wants to use an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S for the rest of their life, they'd be forced to have a phone over 4 inches whether they decide to buy Android or Apple. There is no bandwagon jumping, right?
2. TheLibertine posted on 31 Jul 2012, 07:12 7 13
4 inches is the biggest form factor i can imagine without loosing one-hand control ability. and the iPhone's great ergonomics. With more than 4.3 inches Apple would just turn into a mainstream specs-obsessed manufacturer like everyone else.
4. bloodline posted on 31 Jul 2012, 07:16 9 12
or maybe manufacturers listen to what people want, rather than restricting everything to the manufactures way. 4.3 is still to small for me.
4.6-4.8 range is where its at.
22. ardent1 posted on 31 Jul 2012, 08:39 4 7
That is a really dumb comment. If 4.6 to 4.8" is where it's at, then Apple would have had a hard time selling it's 3.5" iPhones. Based on the recent earnings news, millions of iPhones are still being sold.
26. ObjectivismFTW posted on 31 Jul 2012, 08:56 4 5
That is why Apple is currently paling to the Galaxy S3 in sales? And the Droid Razr on Verizon?
People, realize that there is something called ERGONOMICS. The Galaxy S3 has a 4.8 inch screen but the ERGONOMICS make it very easily to hold and operate with one hand -- tapered edges and reduced bezel.
Boxy phones = bad ergonomics, but that is virtually undetectable on Apple's miniature child play-thing errr... iPhone 4S.
Obviously, Apple will call their new 4 inch phone revolutionary. And yes people, it will be 4 inches, there are no other logical increases.
31. ardent1 posted on 31 Jul 2012, 09:26 3 1
It's not paling...it's pent up demand.
The Droid Razr failed to steal iPhone sales. In the latest quarter at Verizon, there were about 2.7 million iPhones sold.

I am repeating myself that ObjectivismFTW likes to make dumb comments.
The first 4 and last articles are based on estimates or forecasts. That is to say ObjectivismFTW like to believe in FICTION and not in FACTS.
Here are the FACTS, Verizon sold 5.9 million smartphones in Q2:2012. Of that amount 2.7 million were iPhones. That number is up from 2.3 million from the year-earlier period, or year-over-year basis.
Verizon sold 2.9 million droid smartphones but only 2.5 million were 4G LTE meaning the Analysts were WRONG.
LMAO at ObjectivismFTW

Well so far you proved me wrong on one thing: the iP4s didn't outsell the Razr at Verizon, which wasn't such a correction, because the previous Quarter had completely different outcome. Considering the fact that you didn't know "paling" had more than one definition, amongst other things, I'd say at this point, we are about equal (not really, considering one is a common word in the english language, and should be common sense)
Anyway, I never argued that the GS3 outsold in Verizon, but that's it's sales figues are becoming shrinking because of the GS3 release. It's obviously going to take a bit more time to phase the general public out of the Apple spell, but Galaxy is helping to stimulate the process.
EDIT: Furthermore, a larger market share is now held by Android devices. We can see the Apple machine slowing down, obviously the iP5 will re-vitalize that process a bit, but if customers are smart enough to buy the best handset, which, when looking at the likelihoods, will most likely still be in the Android camp, even after the iP5 release. Sure, there is some subjectivity in there, but Apple products are not that hard to decode before their release. We basically knew what the new iPad would be weeks before it's release, same with the iPhone 4, and the 4S, excluding Siri of course, which has turned out to be mostly a gimmick. It's hard to believe that iP5 will be Apple's Ace-In-The-Whole, considering that the phone will be bottle-necked by the sluggish, inflexible operating system. Apple will have to pull humungous bunnyhop here, the last thing they truly "surprised" us with was the iP4, with Retina, but since then, there has been no real innovation that we didn't already expect, and categorized as a necessary improvement (i.e "Retina" on iPad, MacPro, iP4s A5, and iOS 6 was a catch-up attempt, albeit, a failed one.

The Galaxy S3 currently holds the record for most pre-orders, so relatively, the GS3 sold more during the time frame.

carrier pre-orders......not consumer pre-orders. major difference
57. ObjectivismFTW posted on 31 Jul 2012, 13:57 0 1
That doesn't change anything, considering that most of the carriers had delayed their releases due to customer demand overwhelming the supply. I'll post articles about that if you wish.
And what is posted is not about carrier pre-orders

ObjectivismFTW, I read both articles and it's clear you are missing the key point.
1) The articles talks about "worldwide" orders. Apple launches its iPhone in stages, i.e. it launches in different markets over time.
2) The iPhone 4S had one million pre-orders within a 24-hour period beating the previous 600,000 for the iPhone 4. Neither article gave a timeframe for the Samsung S3.
3) I looked the word up "paling" that you used earlier and you used it incorrectly.
Paling: "a fence of pales or pickets" source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/paling
69. ObjectivismFTW posted on 31 Jul 2012, 20:50 0 1
1) I know.. but then again.. so does the Galaxy S3..? The iPhone 4S released in many more markets on it's first day of availability than the GS3, which didn't even release in the US on it's first day of availability.
2) Nobody gives a clear answer as to how many phones were pre-ordered in the first 24-hours, but Wiki says the iP4s sold 4 million in the first 3 days.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_4S
The daily mail article I put up clearly states :
"When the phone arrives, it will instantly become the fastest selling gadget in history, beating out the iPhone 4S's four million units sold in three days"
3)http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/paling
4th definition - faint or feeble; lacking vigor: a pale protest........................................... really...
72. E.N. posted on 01 Aug 2012, 02:08 1 0
the links you provided actually doesn't really help you much.
"The carriers will have pre-allocated the majority of this stock to customers, with a surplus to act as a 'buffer' in case demand exceeds their supply."
This proves that these were carrier and not consumer pre-orders. Additionally the writer states that a surplus was ordered. Also, keep in mind that the 9 million pre-orders were also for in-store SGSIII. In order for it to be really 9 million consumer, they'd have to sell out of their in store stock EVERYWHERE.
UK's Orange says "The Samsung S3 is proving hugely popular and we've seen a great deal of interest from customers"
--- I don't know about you but this doesn't sound like they've sold-out; that's a pretty underhwleming statement.

Pretty sure that tiny screen isn't their main selling point...
58. ObjectivismFTW posted on 31 Jul 2012, 13:59 0 1
I never said it was #1, but, really, looking at it, it will most likely become one of the primary selling points. We know how Apple is with aesthetics, screens especially, which isn't a bad thing, considering the iPhone is in dire need of a aesthetic refresh.

4.3 inch is a standard size for higher end smartphones
3.7 inch is a standard size for mid range smartphones
3.2 inch is a standard size for low end smartphones
Apple iphone is a higher end smartphone .Therefore 4.3 inch is the best size for Iphone 5..
20. networkdood posted on 31 Jul 2012, 08:14 1 0
well, it is going to be closer to 4....so that makes the new iphone a mid-high end smartphone
33. Synack posted on 31 Jul 2012, 09:31 1 1
I can agree that it would be a mid high end phone. It's not the best but it's not the worst. Somewhere in the middle. Leave the high end to Nexus devices.

40. Droid_X_Doug posted on 31 Jul 2012, 10:12 1 0
At 4 inches, I doubt the iPhone display will be HD resolution. Meanwhile the high end Android phones will increasingly have HD resolution 300+ ppi displays. And sales will continue to be lost by Apple. Therefore, expect more lawsuits by Apple in its pathetic attempt to stem the tide of lost sales.

These polls seem to emerge when there is a discrepancy that leaves Apple vulnerable to criticism.
This always reasserts the argument that Apple should release multiple choices. Why should everyone in the Apple camp be limited?
Even in debating what size is preferred amoung Apple users, the tastes vary. This further confirms the argument. Apple is going to consume profits from individuals sacrificing their actual wishes or preferences. No one should have to when spending top dollar for a product.

Just curious how Apple is going to address the 'pixel perfect' aspect in their apps if they change the screen size.
19. akita256 posted on 31 Jul 2012, 08:09 1 0
Needs to be between 4.3 and 4.5". Apple doesn't seem to get the fact that users want a bigger screen........bigger than 4"............and they refuse to consider anything larger. They're like Microsoft in the sense that MS doesn't get the fact that not many people like their stupid tiles......they just keep on making phones with them and everybody keeps on NOT buying them..
I predict that Apple will begin to lose sells after this iPhone is released if the next model is not made with at least a 4.3" screen.
29. rallyguy posted on 31 Jul 2012, 09:15 0 0

I think screen sizes over 4" for a phone are a bit crazy. You are getting towards tablet territory, and If you do need a screen bigger than 4" then you obviously do not need a /phone/, you need a tablet with 3G. There has to be a balance between the device still having function for its intended purpose (its a Phone!).
The current trend (with Android devices anyhow) is bigger is better. They keep pushing the screen size up and up in order to stand out from each previous handset. Well it can only go up so far before you are basically holding a tablet to the side of your head looking like a muppet. I don't think the next iPhone will be anything over 4" to keep the one handed operation aspect as you said.
