The Microsoft Surface is already up for pre-order and prices are in line with those for the iPad starting at $499 for a 32GB model without the Touch Cover…

The only thing I don't really understand in all of this is how RT differs from WP8, let alone W8. The only thing I get is that it runs on ARM hardware meaning its less resource hungry. But what about functionality? Can I install VLC player or something on RT?

You can run only apps from the w8 store and no legacy programs. And windows phone is a completely different os made for phones...

Not COMPLETELY different, just slimmed down and made for mobile needs, not to be a computer. Same kernel, after all

Seriously, Microsoft is playing coy here. Telling us that think can replace laptops and tablets alike, yet idk if i can even sync it with my printer or use flash in the browser. Can i download music onto it and sync them to my phone? Can i upload a dvd to it and watch a saved movie? Or is this just an iPad with a stand, microsoft office, and very little apps?

WOW... 12GB of M$ bloat???

If it comes with Carrier bloat then there will be no 32GB version also... Since M$ bloat + Carrier's bloat will come upto 28GB then...

I am more interested in the surface now that I got to play around properly with Windows 8, booted up the Consumer Preview into my HTPC and was pleasantly surprised. It was fast and better usability on my TV than Vista or 7 was.

Hmm you get 20 gigs of storage and extra gigs of storage by adding an SD chips plus you have Microsoft office in the surface RT computer hey that is still a good deal for
499 dollars folks Microsoft home/Student cost 150 dollars the last time I went to staples to get it for my desktop PC and you can get it for free preloaded on a Tablet computer hey that sounds cool to me. the Only main weakness the Microsoft Surface RT has is special apps have to be written to run on it and they all have to be Tile style
apps like you see on a windows 8 tablets it will take time for a lot of them to become available for windows surface RT tablets Now the Microsoft "Surface Pro" coming out next year is really a PC in the form of a Tablet computer and it runs Full Windows desktop and laptop level programs and they number in the thousands made from the year 2000 to 2012 and I was told that the surface can be put in windows 95 compatibility mode to run windows 95 programs too .I don't know anyone who would want to do that do you? the reason the Surface pro can do this and the windows surface RT cannot is that Microsoft windows RT tablets that just came out use ARMS CPU's and the Microsoft surface pro uses Intel or AMD x86 CPU chips. which has programs written to run with them since before the year 2000 and earlier.

complaining because you get more storage (20gb vs 14gb) and a more complete, versatile OS than the iPad for the same price? that makes sense...
