Here is why the Nokia Lumia 920 has no microSD card slot

0. phoneArena 06 Sep 2012, 09:41 posted on

You know what a Nokia Lumia 820 has that a Nokia Lumia 920 doesn't? A microSD card slot. Not that the company's newest Windows Phone flagship necessarily needs one since it has 32 gigabytes of on-board storage available right out of the box, yet still, the decision to leave out the option for storage expansion boggles the minds of many smartphone enthusiasts...

It's not a real PureView camera like in the 808. It's the new FakeView model. :-)

For that you have your PC and the cloud.

The cloud is only as useful as your data cap allows.

WiFi syncing.

My Lumia 900 syncs my content whenever I'm on my home WiFi automatically

I am fine with 32 GB to be honest...I only have an 8 GB SD card inside my Arc and there is still some free space.

I would agree. Not putting a microSD slot because of "design" issue is a weak excuse. I also agree that having 32GB of storage on board is more then enough for a lot of users.

Why couldn't they put it under the battery cover? or is it not removable?

Not removable. Solid shell with the parts installed in the screen hole. 820 has removable battery covers, hence the MicroSD card availability.

funny, the Nokia N8 (2010) has a solid aluminum shell yet it has a regular sim-slot AND a microSD card slot AND a miniHDMI-port AND a microUSB-port AND a 2mm jack charger-port (the USB charger ports are way to fragile)

So in 2010 Nokia engineers could do what they CAN'T in 2012.
That's not progress!

Amazing, how I compared a 2010 device with the new 2012 model through real facts and immidiately have a thumb down!

Seems like a troll in here

yeah true but the n8 wasn't the biggest success despite all this, its form over function. lots like to have a phone that looks great.

besides why people are making a big deal about the lack of micro sd is just stupid , sure its abit of a downer but it doesn't change the fact this phone is a great piece of tech.

Good for you. Just keep in mind that Nokia is really expensive when the things break down.

As for me. Never a Lumia again. The OS sucks, the compal made devices suck.

I'll stick to my 701 for now and wait for that LG optimus G. If that can record calls like the 4X HD can then I'll get that one or the 4XHD which will be cheaper by then.

"defiled" is such a strong word. It's like saying companies who put micro sd slots to their phones do some kind of defiling to the design. One big "WHATEVER" to Nokia. If they cannot backup their arrogance with a live actual product (fiasco on fake videos and pkcs), they ahould just ahut up.

Honestly, I've never filled up my 16gb SD card and not even close on my 16gb nexus. I don't keep videos locally either, though. Idk why they couldn't just throw an sd slot in though. Regardless, I'm still considering this phone.

I dont know why there is so much antagonism agianst nokia. they have brought to the table some serious inovations and people say, still there is something missing. And the bigger camera sensor saga is crap, cause everyone wants a slim phone, and say if lumia 920 had a huge 21mp sensor or what ever, the phone would have been huge. And people will be crowing about the size and weight. 'Remember samething happened with the 808, now people are praising the 808 so they can banter the lumia 920. Come on appreciate some thing amazing. It has one of the the best displays (Pure motion HD) with 332 ppi making it one of the best beating the iphone retina display, A pretty awsome innovation in camera technology with floating lense, curved glass, clear black technology (refined), scratch resistant unibody, wireless charging, better sensitive touch screen. And people are complaning!, "there is'nt enough innovation''. Common guys be logical and reasonable.

"I dont know why there is so much antagonism agianst nokia. "

Because they grabbed my money (499 euro) in feb 2012 for a Lumia 800. This Lumia got in repair once in March 2012 (repaired under waranty) and again in June 2012 (broken screen). The repair company appointed by Nokia charged me OVER 300 euro to repair the screen.

At the end of July Microsoft anounced that ALL present WP7.x devices would NOT get to be upgraded to WP8 (which in essence made my device obsolete). At that time I still hadn't received my device back.

Needless to say, I declined this ridiculous repair fee. After complaining again and again the repair fee was lowered to 201 euro. Which I declined again since another company would repair it for 159 euro (STILL 25% less than what these bozo's are charging).

I requested my phone back. Now (early September) I still haven't received back got my broken Lumia 800 and the shop that took it for repair told me I waive the device because I didn't want it repaired!!!

So in essence I spend 499 euro, Nokia and/or its affiliates try to trick me for another 326,66 euro. And now I have NO Phone (Lumia 800 cyan) and lost over 499 euro + telephone calls + registered complaints + various transport cost to-from shop etc...

And then you wonder why there 's so much hostility against Nokia?

If you can read dutch the whole story including the sales ticket, repai r form and telephone conversations with Nokia Care can be found at:

I think the decision was marketing driven and not technical. Honestly I don't use microSD cards. I use dropbox and I have 100gb of so that solves the space issue. As far as programs installed I know 32gb will be enough.

As far as why I think it was a marketing thing. I believe the average Joe likes the ability to by now and improve later. While 32gb can store quite abit I do realize its physical limitation. With all the other features its not something to cry over. Or just go Android. Different strokes for different folks.

Do not forget that you NEVER get the full amount. Just look at e.g. the HTC One X. You get 26GB user free space from that 32GB. In essence you probably end up with about 30GB real storage after partitioning and formatting the card.

For example: I currently have about 32,5 GB on my 60GB iPod classic.

Not convinced...

Photo taken with Lumia takes 1.65MB ; 33 seconds clip 56MB ; average MP3 (128kB not mentioning FLAC) is about 3-4MB (album has about 12 songs = 40MB in average) ; offline maps of China close to 900MB ; single European country maps about 200MB.

Total storage reported by Lumia 900 is 13,61GB ; a few photos in the memory (up to 30), one video, some apps installed and downloaded off line maps for Asia and part of Europe 9.3GB left.

Personally I do take about 300-500 photos a month and about 4-5 minutes of videos (300-500 photos x 1.65MB + 4-5min x 100MB = 500-800MB photos and 400-500MB video = 900-1300MB per month ; let's assume 1GB/month).

My music collection is about 0.8-1GB/month ; 250 songs download allowance per month (12 month contract) -> annually about 10GB. Lets assume I like 50% of it and I do keep taking photos and keeping 30% of them on my mobile

30% of photos kept = 330MB/month
50% of music kept = 450MB/month
Total: 780MB/month

At the moment 9.3GB left (removed all music from phone to check it) so it means that within next 12 month I'm going to have to start to remove photos or/and shuffle music I do listen to... If I start to transfer FLAC music or higher bit rate one it would mean that I'm out in about 6 month....

Would be interesting to see some stats on storage usage among cell phone customers. I would be very surprised to see more than 1% of users needing more than 32gb storage.

Stop with this bull sh*t excuses Nokia........ If u can put sim card slot and it's not ruining the unibody experience then how can putting micro as card slot ruin it.................... Just tell the real fact, that Elop and his bosses at Microsoft wanted more users to purchase some higher storage plans of skydrive, and that's the reason you ommited card slot from this device....................

even if that was the reason so what, the iphones had 5 years of no expandable memory and reviewers have praised it. if you need more then 32 gb then buy the 820.

dont understand the bitching about this, if you need more there are other phones out there
