HTC explains in detail why the HTC Desire HD is not getting Android 4.0 update
0. phoneArena posted on 28 Jul 2012, 00:06
Last weekend, HTC reversed its position on the HTC Desire HD and decided that the handset's poor performance with the Android 4.0 update would not provide customers with a goo experience and so the manufacturer ditched the update...

I feel bad for the HTC Desire HD owners. It is sounding like a game of he loves me; he loves me not. Apparently HTC doesn't love you any more.

HTC isn't the only one who does this. Motorola is notorious for this.
49. OptimusOne posted on 28 Jul 2012, 17:07 0 0
well HTC is slightly better than motorola.
WTF DROID 3 DOESN'T GET ICS. I SWEAR DROID 3 COULD RUN SENSE 4
and its specs are better than desire hd
59. RomeoJDR posted on 29 Jul 2012, 17:57 0 0
hmmm, isn't the Xoom going to be updated to Jellybean, which was released a year before the less than year old Jetstream which started on Gingerbread and staying on Gingerbread. You can't tell me that device doesn't have the capability to handle 4.0. Not to defend moto but certainly no worst than HTC and should only get better now owned by Google.

Force backup to MicroSD or PC when connected to HTC Sync, then allow repartition/update to ICS... otherwise trim some of the fat off the /system and add the useless apps to /data...
Once again, HTC makes excuses with plenty of other options available...
57. smartphone posted on 29 Jul 2012, 11:52 0 0
There are four major types of data- messeges, contacts, apps, images & videos.
contacts and images/videos can be easily backedup.
messages can be backed up or can be bearable in their loss.
apps can be reinstalled easily.
the cheap one V can run ICS and Sense 4 , so HTC is making poor excuses for their bad customer support.

Just release the RUU for it and let the devs work their magic.

Thats right! just like for Htc Desire for the Gingerbread update!
54. Superpiff posted on 29 Jul 2012, 09:58 0 0
Couldn't agree more,I'm running aospx B4 on my inspire and it works flawlessly except video record, that ruu would be great so they can have the proper drivers for the cam

It's strange how the Thunderbolt will get the update and not the Desire HD. Both of them have very similar specs. Even the Incredible 2 will receive the update. Of course all of that can change between now and whenever it's slated to be released. HTC is sjowing how lazy they can be, I still haven't gotten official ics on my rezound. Stop releasing too many phones per quarter.
44. arcq12 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 14:28 1 0
dude, they haven't released anything after the one series and they won't release anything yet probably until the holiday season . .
52. JC557 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 20:05 0 0
HTC should make an effort to release one model (slight variations permitted) on all carriers as Samsung has done for the GS3. The droid inc 4g was released and other phones are in preparation for release last I heard.l so yeah, they did release and are releasing phones after the One series.
50. OptimusOne posted on 28 Jul 2012, 17:08 0 0
yeah. HTC is probably gonna announce that thunderbold/incredible 2 isnt getting ics because the specs are literally the same and the desire hd even has more ram
53. JC557 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 20:07 0 0
Desire HD seems to have the same RAM count as the Thunderbolt and Inc 2: 768 MB. Same goes for ROM storage.
I no longer use the TB otherwise I would be pissed if htc should cancel the official 4.0 update.
5. Forsaken77 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 01:05 6 2
Stop putting out devices with very little internal storage then HTC! You cheap bastards! No smartphone should have less than 16GB's of internal storage in this day and age. Or why not make it available through the computer to those who will accept the repartitioning, like how Samsung uses Kies instead of OTA? Cheap bastards, that's why. I don't have a Desire HD and already have 4.0.4 on my phone, but I'm so tired of these companies coming out with excuse after excuse of why they won't update. Just be honest and say "we're cheap bastards and don't wanna take the time to update an older device."
6. darkskoliro posted on 28 Jul 2012, 01:25 4 0
this day and age? dhd was released years ago...
35. Forsaken77 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 11:15 0 0
I was meaning roughly the last 2 years or so. And yes HTC has more internal storage on their high-end phones, but they still release mid and low ranged phones with minimal storage. Memory is very cheap, so EVERY phone should have a decent amount of internal storage.
8. 1701nino posted on 28 Jul 2012, 03:31 7 0
What the hell are you talking about???I think HTC makes the best android phones hardware wise.At least HTC has the courtesy to speak to consumers.Every new phone from HTC has enough internal memory to use(one series) and its out of the box with ICS while CRAPSUNG is making cheap plasticky phones with terrible UI (you hear me,stop copying apple in design its too obvious) and foe example the original galaxy s was the high/end smartphone of its day and its not getting ICS and samsung didn't say a word about it to no one.Now my friend tell who is the greedy bastard here HTC or SAMSUNG???
19. Droid_X_Doug posted on 28 Jul 2012, 07:56 3 0
"I think HTC makes the best android phones hardware wise."
You think it is not a good thing when Sammy gives the consumer 2Gb of RAM? You must not be planning on upgrading your handset beyond JB.
39. 1701nino posted on 28 Jul 2012, 11:47 0 0
Believe me when the next version of android is put i'm probably going to have a new handset;)
33. taz89 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 11:10 3 0
Yep Samsung surely do make capacity phones no wonder they they are the only android oem doing well and no1 oem in the world... The s3 is doing bad where the one X Just sold 10 million... Come on crapsung your phones are rubbish its why you are doing rubbish in sales. The s3 looks exactly like the iPhone please stop it lol
42. 1701nino posted on 28 Jul 2012, 13:01 2 0
Yeah CRAPSUNG is the worst snake of them all, you know why?Because take from everybodys UI something and try to make it their own and it still looks ugly, for example, the iconography is obviously from APPLE and some android features like pinch to view all homescreens is from HTC,the list goes on, a lot of people who were affraid to cross from ios to android did so because the UI fron samsung looks so similar to apples that it gave them a sense of comfort. My point is samsung is sucesfull no doubt about it but the fact is they have a terrible UI and no originality. Well thats why they are in the courtroom right now;)Sory Sammy the truth hurts.
45. taz89 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 14:57 0 0
Lol snake.. Listen no one is copy free.. You do HTC Motorola are also in The court room...would love to know how the latest tw is anything alike iOS...would also love to see where you got iOS users jumped to Samsung phones..by simple math the rate Samsung have been growing and the reason was because iOS users were jumping to it cause its like iOS then iOS market share should be declining just as fast as Samsung s is growing..considering this is a HTC article why even bring Samsung into..when you know you got just as much haters as fans you know your successful. BTW not saying all Samsung phones are crap but just like HTC moto etc they all have crap as well as good phones...HTC are not where Samsung are because ATM they are not just good enough its as simple as that
34. Forsaken77 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 11:10 3 0
I wasn't comparing HTC to Samsung... you were. I'm well aware of what cheap junk Samsung phones are, I own 2 of them. I wish I could take Samsungs' software and features, and pair it with HTCs' build quality.
41. EvoHero posted on 28 Jul 2012, 12:34 2 0
It's the carriers' fault, not HTC's. HTC could build a phone with the highest possible specs that current technology allows if they wanted to. But they sell it to the carriers, who turn around and provide it to the general public in order to get new monthly subscribers. The carriers do a lot of math in figuring out both the per unit cost to buy from the manufacturer and the per unit cost to consumers. Both factor into the bottom line goal of gaining subscribers.
Basically, the carriers tell the manufacturers what they want in a new phone. HTC just gives carriers what they want. Biggest limiting factor is cost. I suspect that in this case more storage would have made the phone too expensive for the carrier based on their calculations.
7. Savage posted on 28 Jul 2012, 01:41 1 2
Oh really great! HTC you are going downhill. Your devices are low on specs, obviously they are not gonna be upgraded! Idk why inspite of making great androids you don't put ample memory or atleast include a micro-sd slot.
I just got ICS on my Sensation XE a few weeks ago and 'm worried if you people are gonna give us Jellybeans.
10. ojdidit84 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 04:19 1 0
As far as I'm concerned, HTC does well on the hardware side of things. They need work in their software department though. They need to shell out top dollar to hire some top talent to further optimize Sense on their devices and start to future-proof their devices from here on out. Internal memory is decent on their latest devices, camera tech keeps getting better as well as having SLCD2 in the mix.
The only gripe is with devices still only having 1GB of ram where they should at least have 1.5-2+ here on out with Sense still being the biggest resource hog on any device. Oh and put SD card slots back in the damn phones. The EVO variant of the One X is what all One X's should've been.

The desire hd is 2-3 years old now,who cares?! You can't expect phones from a few years ago to get the most up to date updates when they are running on older hardware. Besides anyone who still has a desire hd has it for ages, and is probably due an upgrade and or the phone is on its last legs wear and tear wise anyhow
36. taz89 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 11:19 0 0
When a phone like the Nexus s which is lower spec than the dhd gets jb and dhd doesn't even get ics it is just ridiculous.. Dhd owners should at least been give the choice to update to ics like desire owners were given the chance to update to gingerbread. It's just sad that a phone that is better spec than the Nexus s is 2 major os behind.
40. Hammerfest posted on 28 Jul 2012, 12:03 2 0
My HD2 which still manages to have a bigger XDA development group then ALMOST ANY OTHER DEVICE, and manages to run more OS's as well, begs you to shut your trap.
It started out with WM6.5, has gotten Android all the way up to JellyBean now even, Meego, Linux, and even a few other random OS's I have never heard of before.
My whole point however is that you say "who cares?!" and I can officially say, that quite a large group of people do in fact care! They might not be official updates, but it completely invalidates your "cant expect phones from a few years ago to get the most up to date updates when they are running older hardware" (the HD2 adds an extra push however, it was NEVER meant to run Android, older hardware eh?)...
Oh, and I might have a new phone, but my HD2 is no-where near on its last legs, my new phone was bought by my company for work...
13. Raymond_htc posted on 28 Jul 2012, 05:25 3 0
Well Desire HTC owners... you all r good enough already. at least, you all get Sense 3.0 updates! We Wildfire S owners... only got the 3.0 locksreen. Count your blessings!
14. young0ne posted on 28 Jul 2012, 05:27 0 0
You must be forgetting that Nexus S came out a in 2010 and it has jelly bean and the Desire came out at the same time. so why this phone it not getting it is bull crap.I feel sorry for these owners.
15. Asasindude26 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 05:38 4 0
Dude just keep saying CRAP! The Nexus S is a GOOGLE phone and if you might know already- Who makes android?!
OH maybe Google! So of course they will give there phones BETTER versions of Android than other manufacturers!
And the Nexus line always offers updates before anyone else,so if you want updates you have to get a Nexus device.... Simple :O
And this is the selling point of Nexus devices-you get updates before others and most of the time the "others" don't even get new Androids !
Oh a BTW: I disagree with Nexus S getting Jellybean, since it already got ICS 4.0.4
20. young0ne posted on 28 Jul 2012, 08:14 0 0
One the phone was made by Samsung which means it still had to go thought them for any updates. Two yes Nexus does have jelly bean you might wanna look it up.
32. g2a5b0e posted on 28 Jul 2012, 11:03 0 0
How can you disagree with the Nexus S getting JB? It was announced a few weeks ago. There's nothing to disagree with.
37. taz89 posted on 28 Jul 2012, 11:21 0 0
Think you need to get your facts right before disagreeing faith someone as the Nexus s has already got jb

That's the problem with android you have to chose very carefully which OEM,which phone to buy, thats why most people go for iphones, the non tech people, you only have one or two choices.I'm a proud iphone 3GS and ipad 2 owner bbbuuutttt after years of consideration i'm going for the HTC ONE V.Don't get wrong the 3GS was a great phone and it served me well, but after a while you start to get bored with the same UI year after year and a big dissapointment,no SIRI FOR IPAD 2 USERS!!! That was the last straw,
THATS WHY I'M COMING TO ANDROID,HELL YEA MAMMA;)
22. roscuthiii posted on 28 Jul 2012, 08:28 0 0
I agree, but I think consumers of any & all products should take the time (even if only a little bit) to do some research and comparative shopping.
Otherwise, people are just buying a company's marketing hype.
30. mrbtree posted on 28 Jul 2012, 10:01 0 0
dont get a one v, a one s is much better and shows off the true power of android (one v single core, one s dual core krait) plus the bigger screen and better screen quality, super amoled vs lcd but of course the grand daddy is the one x

For gaming and more desktop like activities i'm using and ipad 2 and the one v is more then capable for these tasks.

Oh, and not to be "that guy" but I don't hear anyone bitching about the Galaxy S1 (which came out around the same time for people in the states & Canada) not getting ICS... The people that really want ICS probably already have ICS running on their phones via XDA or CM and will probably do the same with JB.
47. OptimusOne posted on 28 Jul 2012, 17:04 0 0
who cares about this. HTC doesn't need to release the RUU to advanced users because they all have custom ICS/JB roms
and most non advanced users wouldn't probably care whether they run ICS or not.
they would care more if whether their angry birds levels would be deleted
56. Superpiff posted on 29 Jul 2012, 11:05 1 0
Yeah but they are still kind of incomplete in the camera department which is a deal breaker for a lot of people.
55. speckledapple posted on 29 Jul 2012, 10:11 0 0
One solution, make better phones that have future proofing features. Though the Desire was released some time ago, making a device future proof allows a company to not run into these types of problems. HTC obviously did not think far enough ahead in this one.
58. Pulseman posted on 29 Jul 2012, 13:30 0 0
Its not really a future proofing thing, ICS is a monster rewrite of a lot of how Android works, lots of devices are having or had problems geting ICS ported to it
All HTC has to do is drop at least a partial kernal source (as long as it has the appropirate camera drivers) and the DHD/Inspire 4G will be all set, at least until Android K.... comes out, but by then i dont think anyone will give a rats ass about the phone anyway
