So what is HTC's game plan as far as updating its current models to Android 4.1 is concerned; according to the Taiwan based handset manufacturer, its focus is on getting its 2012 dated devices moved over to Jelly Bean while older models will require a long, hard look ona case by case basis...

Better than Motorola's plan who refuses to update any 2011 phone.

Not Quietly! There are many Htc phones.... ICS-capable not being updated!
Let's hope this is not the case for JB.

check the HTC website, look for RUU (ROM Upgrade Utility), some of the phones are not updated through FOTA, but rather RUU..
My desire S is not updated to ICS, although it is included in the ICS update map, but then HTC said that the update, along with the ICS kernel are out in HTCDev.com
Incredible S is updated through RUU as well..

We arent talking only for the Desire S.... DHD, Desire Z, not mentioning others
51. bayusuputra posted on 13 Nov 2012, 02:32 0 0
I'm only saying.. I don't know about DHD, DZ, etc.. All I know is that some of the phones that are promised ICS might get it through RUU method..

my reasons. just because it "can" run jb doesn't mean it can run it well.
running it well means completly stable, no bugs whatsoever, for the average consumer.
for techy people, I'm sure there are custom 4.1 roms out already and they don't need to bother with the "official" update

My Samsung Captivate runs Jelly Bean very well. Mxy, the Razr of 2011 is going to get the update to Jelly Bean...

Android is becoming more and more RAM hungry -_-
10. dsmboost posted on 12 Nov 2012, 16:09 9 1
You think it's only android that becomes more RAM hungry? Every piece of software since the computer was invented that goes through enhancements and upgrades will always use up more RAM due to new features. Why do you think low end PC's now come with 2-3 gigs of ram as opposed to 128mb like they did 10 years ago?
42. blingblingthing posted on 12 Nov 2012, 20:33 2 0
This isn't apple who's updates have like two new features. Android OS has new elements about the it that require more power. Google now pushing you cards, the expandable notifications, the camera showing the camera view while navigating to your past pictures. The photo sphere feature and implementing project butter etc.
IOs brought what ,a map app, decline call with message and what elese?
Apple doesn't add features at the rate android does hence it does not need that much ram.
Buy at the end of the day. With technology moving at a fast rate . why do you want an Os that stagnates?

Yeah, typical of HTC to simply leave out devices they consider low end from an upgrade. I dislike this brand so much now. The HTC one V was released in 2012 darn it! You can't support your own product that beds less than a year old?

Samsung did the same thing. Stop crying already. Hell Samsung still release phone with Gingerbread.

okay the one v and desire c came with ics so surely If they can handle ics then they can handle jb
22. OptimusOne posted on 12 Nov 2012, 16:48 1 0
just because it can "handle" jb doesn't mean it is bug free and daily driver suitable.
same thing with my old g1. it also "can" run ics or jb but it is not daily driver suitable
28. taz89 posted on 12 Nov 2012, 17:38 0 2
of course if it can't handle it can't handle it can't handle but the nexus s which has the same spec has jb...anyways thats not my point, my point is why release a phone in 2012 with 512mb ram restricting any chance of an update...its not like the v is a super cheap phone its a low mid range phone...also after being on xda it is shown that hardware requirement for ICS and jb are pretty much the same so any device that can handle ICS should have no problem with jb... HTC keep on making excuse after excuse for updates...they say the desire HD won't get ICS caused it will confuse customers and then they say they will update the thunderbolt which is the exact same hardware but with lte... people keep saying HTC are the best at updates but I don't see how they are ...
37. OptimusOne posted on 12 Nov 2012, 20:03 0 0
how do you know that htc will really update the thunderbolt?
besides, the HTC desire HD's system partition was too small for sense 3.6 so devs had to change the partition layout in hboot to run the incredible s's update. It would certainly confuse customers to find that there personal data was deleted in this update
there are these people called "less fortunate" people who can't afford a one x, or one x+ etc. they use cheaper phones. HTC still has to extend their market to those people. thats why phones with 512 mb of ram exist.
ics and jb are certainly not the same. there are many under the hood differences! just leaving it like that
40. taz89 posted on 12 Nov 2012, 20:30 0 0
They could have done what they did with the desire when they made an update available through there site so people who wanted to update can...am sure people would be more than happy to backup there stuff and if they are not then they won't..they said they will update the thunderbolt but if they go back on that then its no surprise HTC are going downhill...I know there are unfortunate people who Cant afford to buy top end phone but the one v wasn't priced as a low end and phone...it was priced at a midrange price...I get phones that are like £100 to not get an update but when they are like £200 they deserve at least 1 update... as I have said the requirements for ICS and jb is the same so any phone that has ICS should run jb...I have a HTC desire which has more than enough power to run jb yet its stuck on gingerbread... all I ever hear from htc are excuse after excuse for updates...1st desire can't handle 2.3 then they change there mind after out cry...next desire HD won't get it because they think people are stupid when am sure if you just put a warning sign before update saying you will lose everything please back up and people will understand and now they saying any phone with 512mb wont get jb when the requirement for ICS and jb is same and intact jb is more efficient.. they still can't guarantee anyone who got a phone in 2011 a promise to jb...by the time any of these phones ever get jb the next version of amdroid will be out.fact is with HTC your never ever on the latest update...everyone keeps praising HTC for there updates but for what...they can't even give a time frame for these updates can't even gaurantee all one x and one s etc owners jb update by end of year where there competition samunng has promised jb update for s2 and note 1 by the end of this year and these phones came out last year

I'm from Europe, so carriers are not a problem for me, but i need to know more about features, i'm a Windows Phone user, i came from Maemo, also open source and i loved it, but there is something missing in Windows Phone, so i need to know a lot more about the features of Android :)
56. OpTiMuS_BlAcK posted on 13 Nov 2012, 09:55 1 0
Try one out in a store, too many features to mention, you get lots and lots of apps and almost PC-like capabilities. There's just so many things to do with an Android, you'll never get sick of what you can discover :)

Yeah so am I. I'm hoping for sometime before the year is over. All I'm looking forward to is Google Now though. I've been very impressed by my phone so far (although the service I get from Sprint is another story all together...)

Props to HTC I think what they said is more then reasonable. They have an obligation to the customer to make sure their products provide a good smooth experience. And if that is too much for some to swallow tough s**t. Because unfortunately the day and age we are in now HTC is damned if they do damned if they don't. Meaning people with weaker phones will complain if they don't get it, then if they do and it runs poorly they will bitch just as much. So HTC is trying to uphold its name and really the ones who don't have phones that can run it either need to upgrade if they want it that bad. Or they probably won't notice the difference in OS upgrades anyway.
But I respect them for being straight up and saying why they are doing what they are and the reason behind it(even though they don't need to). Also kudos for standing up and saying no to updating devices that can't handle it smoothly. Where some smaller manufacturers may push it just to say they did even though it probably hurt the user experience more then it helped.

512 MB RAM or less? That's BS!
CM can do it, why not OEMs?
58. darkskoliro posted on 14 Nov 2012, 21:14 0 0
Then by all means, use CM. Its probably better anyway.
But if you bought a phone that has 512 or less ram I dont know why you should expect so much when you probably wont even see a performance upgrade more likey a downgrade.
